Jeopardy!’ champ James Holzhauer has won over $1 million—here’s how he keeps winning

Quote:
James Holzhauer, a 34-year-old professional sports gambler, is blowing up the traditional “Jeopardy!” style of play — and taking home mad money as a result. Even if you’re not competing on a game show, though, experts say you can take something away from Holzhauer’s aggressive, and successful, strategy.

Holzhauer became the second person in the show’s history to surpass $1 million in winnings in nontournament play. After the game that aired Wednesday, his winnings totaled over $1.1 million.

1: Separation of senses, processes knowledge of category while listening for end of 'answer'.

2: Excellent timing on the button. Press to early, you're locked out.

3: Eclectic knowledge. Retains what he has read, viewed, and heard.

4: Luck, categories are in fields that he knows at least some general facts,
wait until Jeopardy has a couple of categories that he dumber than rocks at.

"What are the top reasons Holzhauer is winning?"

Excellent, that's what I was thinking. It's not his betting skills so much as the reasons you mention. And his knowledge IS impressively eclectic. He's given some answers where I just threw my hands up and realized I would probably never acquire that breadth of knowledge.

Obviously his choosing to hit the bottom of the board first is responsible for the size of his winnings. Alex is is on record as expressing mild disapproval of the strategy, but he's certainly given due credit to Holzhauer throughout this run.

"What bothers me is when contestants jump all over the board ... Why are they doing that? They're doing themselves a disservice. When the show's writers construct categories they do it so there's a flow in terms of difficulty,, and if you jump to the bottom of the category you may get a clue that would be easier to understand if you'd begun at the top of the category and saw how the clues worked."

I would love to see the top three all-time players get together for a winner take all exhibition, two or three day event.

He knows how to bet on daily doubles and he plays the board so much better by going for the high dollar answers and searching for daily doubles. All of that on top of his knowledge and buzzer skills he would rape Jennings.

His low aversion to risk/loss is admirable

Jennings played when his opponents had more skill. Back in the day, players worked harder and understood the game better. Now it's nothing more than people who can press the buzzer the fastest...

I highly disagree and not sure how you can say they understood the game better (100% off the mark) Watson showed how to play the game and James has pretty much perfected that style as well as a human can. I would argue nobody has as much skill as him

If they truly understood the game better why did they use archaic strategies LOL

Typically you and I are on the same page but this one seriously I don't get.... how has the game changed that you think it's so much different now?

Well one big change; back in the day after 5 wins in row, you were done, but could come
back for the championships if you scored high enough.

They've changed the rules to favor the modern players. The judges are biased. They call things one way when new contestants are on the show but they call it different for the returning champions. Honestly, I'd rather go to a bar and watch trivia night. It's a purer game without all the primadonnas.

I ask my neighbors if I can watch them play trivial pursuit. It’s a pleasure to watch people who play it just for the pure love and joy of trivia.

Is he being serious? I took that as a joke. It’s even funnier he is calling out a vast jeopardy conspiracy.

Big Game Show has ruined games for me, personally. If you want to watch how games should be played you're going to have to get involved in the underground scene. Local pub, pizza joint, etc. Sure the frills aren't there but I'll trade that for non-elitist judges any day of the week.

It's the parents that ruined everything. So many parents thought their kids were the next big thing on Jeopardy. They spent $1000s traveling for tournaments and meaningless trophies only to find out their kids were never that good anyway.

Don't even get me started about the performance enhancing drugs that some of these contestants are clearly using...

Holzhauer* is good but he will never be a Jennings.

But wait! On further review, I may have uncovered actual evidence of game show judging bias elsewhere.

There aren't returning champions in this case, but my wife and I saw a head-scratcher on "America Says" last night. This was in the final speed round, where the regular-game winning team tries for the bonus bucks, and the judges cost the team the extra money.

The fill-in-the-blank statement was "During Christmas I like to display my inflatable S______". The first team member said "Santa Claus", but it wasn't correct, and time ran out while the team was still struggling to figure out what it might be.

The answer? "SANTA". The host said "our judges were looking for a specific wording, and yours was unacceptable, we had to have it exact." Mrs. Z and I were saying "No way!"

However, earlier in the game one of team members had a H___ on the board and said "house". The judges gave them credit for a correct reply, although the exact answer that popped up was "HOME" ........

Seeing a lot of people complain about his bet on final jeopardy as if it was bad. It wasnt but I have to laugh at people questioning the gambling methods of a guy who does it for a living and just won over 2 million on the show
