League Tournament

Just for off season conversation, as far as conference or league tournaments go, what league or conference would be the strongest in the state?

[QUOTE=jdesfo197;7293485]Suburban League

Would probably agree that this would be the toughest League/Conference tournament in the state.

Neither does the Federal League, but what's your point.

Not as good as the Federal League but pretty tough.

this is a year to year

discussion. I would imagine that the suburban league was hands down the toughest this year. Wadsworth Brecksville Aurora being consistently good every year. Throw in the random studs from other schools.

For small school division northwest Ohio has a couple tough leagues. NWOAL (Delta, Wauseon, Archbold, Patrick Henry, Swanton)... NBC (Genoa, Eastwood, Elmwood, Otsego, Lake)

Then the ultimate MeatGrinder multi division 20 team SBC wrestles one league tournament (Milan Edison, Sandusky Perkins, Tiffin Columbian, Bellevue, Oak Harbor, Gibsonburg, Norwalk, Fremont St. Joes, Lakota)

*Schools listed had at least 1 state placer

I log a vote for The Suburban League.

Brecksville
Aurora
Wadsworth

& then just slightly below them:

Nordonia
Barberton
North Royalton
Twinsburg
Highland

Each team with deep wrestling traditions & multiple wrestlers that are either placing at state or challenging to get there every year.

Brecksville, Wadsworth, and Aurora are going to remain quality tough, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Medina Highland win the Suburban League in 2021.

EOWL, is as tough as it gets, how many state champ, runner up, & 3rd place finishers? And top 5 or 10 teams in the state?

I shouldn’t say it’s not close between the 2 leagues. The last few years though I think the EOWL has been the top conference in Ohio. I think the state tourney results prove that.

EOWL is probably the toughest, but it’s also not a normal conference/league. A lot of the schools are in 2 conferences/leagues if you count the EOWL, which is obviously not the case for most other schools and conferences. Beaver Local wrestles in three conference tournaments (OVAC, EOWL and Buckeye 8).

With all due respect, and not disrespecting the EOWL because that's a very good league tournament, don't give the song and dance that the EOWL is better, and you're "not sure it's close." The Suburban League had 26 wrestlers place at the state tournament. 19 of those state placers were from Div 1. The EOWL had 2 state placers from Div. 1. Div 2 has great wrestlers. There are examples where the division 2 champ at a certain wt. class is considered better than his counterpart in division 1, but there is a reason they are separated into divisions. Think about it. I'm not sure the thread can still be found, but Bucksman rated the top 15-20 teams in the state regardless of division. Take a look at the rankings. It's not the number of teams in a league/conference, but the quality of those teams.

Yes they are separated for a reason and that reason is the number of students that a school has. Not all D1 schools have top athletes. The advantage of a D1 school is the numbers, meaning that the bigger schools could be 4 deep and allow for different practice partners and challenges. Now with that said, the suburban league is tough as they get.

I would say that the top three teams in the Suburban league were better this past season than any of the EOWL. That being said both a really tough leagues.

The tournament is only 1 division, there is not separation.

Have to go with Suburban easily, especially with Brecksville, Wadsworth, and Aurora in there but all those teams are tough.

its more difficult to compare leagues when some leagues dont have tournaments. Is the Federal league tough?

Yes it is only one tournament. The league itself for duals I am guess is separated into divisions.

No league matches next season; the league championship will be decided solely by the league tournament.
