Payless Opens Fake Luxury Store, Tricks Influencers Into Paying Designer Prices

Quote:
Here it is, the very best viral scam of the year: Payless opened a fake luxury boutique at an upscale mall in Los Angeles, called it “Palessi” and sold their discount footwear at high-end prices—a markup of 1,800 percent, CBS reports—to 60 fashion influencers.

The social media celebrities were told they’d be given $100 and $250 for the “market research event.” They purchased shoes from the pop-up—one influencer shelled out $645 for kicks that retail for $19.99-$39.99. They were also asked for their opinion on the styles, which ranged from “It’s just stunning. Elegant, sophisticated” to “I can tell it was made with high-quality material.” Okay!

I thought this was great. I have a couple relatives that would have bit. Got a 40 year old brother in-law who would wear a $hit stained tee-shirt as long as it had the Polo logo on it. We are WAY too materialistic as a society.

I agree. But I still want one of those new Jeep trucks. I haven't wanted a thing, for a long time but I wouldn't mind one of those showing up in my driveway. Army green.

I was very amused with the story when I saw it. I hate payless. Nothing in that store is remotely related to a cow. It may just be me but I refuse to wear plastic shoes. I spent a lot of money one year to buy my wife good leather dress boots and she loved them, but still also wears some fakecrap she bought at Payless.

You know what? I said the same thing to a buddy of mine the other day. I like cars & trucks as much as the next guy but my truck is more a tool to me than anything. I usually do not get excited over a new vehicle but when I saw the new Jeep Gladiator I instantly wanted one. It looks like what every boy wanted when he was a kid and is still ingrained upstairs. Very cool truck.

And it's nice to see old jarheads never die nor will miss an opportunity to slam a grunt.

Come with a special spot for them to hide their crayons?

Think you two mean OD green....

Nonetheless, this is an absolute CLASSIC social experiment.

I have heard the concept on Shark Tank a time or two where they state to the contestants they need to/can/should up the price quite a bit to give it more of a luxurious/high end feel to the customer.

When it comes to shoes/clothes and such I don't know why people will shell out huge bucks for it.

Similar thing with food. HIgh end steak houses.....the food isn't that much better, and sometimes as good or less, than a much lower end place but because they jack up the price people feel like it is a privilege.

You have to be an idiot to not know the difference between real leather shoes and what Payless sells. Their shoes still smell of Chinese factory

I don't think I've even been in a Chinese Factory or a Payless or had Nike's. But...

I remember a story about JCPenney (I think it's was them) were not able to sell sweaters at $10 and wanted to lower the price. Mr Penney said no, raise the price to $20. The managers said why, he said the customer will think they are getting a better quality sweater and they raised the price. The sweaters sold out...

Well yeah sure Generals but they're into paperwork. It's how they keep their job. I think most others just call them their OD's. Maybe some call them their OD greens but I don't know those people.

And, on the flip side... I saw a sweater in Belk's and later bought the exact same (don't you love that expression?) sweater in Penny's for half the price. I care nothing about "cachet".

While I do have a couple of Polo sweaters (bought on sale, of course), for years I wore KMart knit shirts with a horse logo, iirc. I was stylin'! LOL

I grew up poor. Did not realize it at the time nor do I believe I was poor looking back but we did not have name brand "things". Me and my Irish-twin shared clothes. Being raised by Depression era grandparents does that I guess. Grandfather would drive across town to get gas .02 cheaper a gallon.

Even to this day if I find something I like cheap I will buy 5 of them. Lol. Tennis shoes, jeans, tee-shirts...

It still amazes me though, how many folks are overly consumed with materialistic and perceived "things". I guess Agassi was right, image is everything. Slap a name brand on a $5 tee-shirt and charge people $60 and they buy it. Odd to me.

I am currently wearing 15 year old sweat pants that I got playing high school basketball, a shirt from Walmart, and socks that have a hole in the heel. I do not care one bit about brand. If it’s comfortable I will wear it.

Not the ones I wear. Does a Chinese factory smell different than an American one? Just curious.

Which ones do you wear? Over 75% of NB shoes are made outside of the usa. Even the ones with “made in the USA” are only 70% made or assembled in the USA. I have no idea what Chinese factories smell like, probably your shoes or a significant portion of it.

Seeing as you're the resident troll it is easy to understand how we got here. I responded to someone stating Payless shoes smell like a "Chinese factory" which led me to ask what his Nikes smell like as they are just as much Chinese made as Payless. Then you came in to troll me because I have beaten you up at every turn in the past and you simply cannot help yourself from another dose.

And here we are now. I said it before but I could fart and you'd come running to smell it. Now we are talking about my American made shoes and how you think they smell? I could Jedi mind-trick you all day.
