A concern in Urban areas, not metropolitan cities.

About 15 years ago, I was shocked when a local school stopped fielding a Freshmen team. Now I'm watching teams have trouble fielding JV teams. I get the concussion reason for football but this just doesn't make sense.

It has to be more than girls deciding they don't want to play. I suspect it has more to do with lack of rec ball and increased demands on girls to play year round. Not much room for girls to pickup the game at a later age.

Kids are lazy. Sports are hard work, especially basketball. Easier to play video games, be on your phone, get a job, etc...

I believe in the past decade plus, that more and more female student athletes are focusing on one sport, and playing JO Volleyball/AAU Basketball/Club Soccer in their HS sport's offseason. These avenues to work on your game against high level competition were not as prevalent 20-30 years ago.

Also, maybe we don't see the #'s issue with male athletes because football has really no offseason opportunities (except focusing on weight training instead of joining the basketball or wrestling team)?

It would be interesting to survey how many girls are involved in these extra-scholastic athletic teams...bet those involved is much higher than in the past.

Striving for Athletic Scholarships more so than ever...who can blame them, with a 7% increase in a college education year after year after year...

High school sports participation has increased for 29 straight years. Girls like volleyball and not so much with basketball. Kids are far more active than back in the day. Fans are becoming lazy

I guess I could see the participation increase and agree...additional sports are continually being added at schools local to me.
-Bowling
-Lacrosse
-Rugby
-Hockey

Bowling is hot right now? It's just odd to have a HS sports venue with a bar...

J.O volleyball and club soccer is killing girls basketball. Also, the focus on playing one sport does not help.

Just a thought:

Pay to Play at many schools may also be keeping students from participating.
Also agree that apathy has set in.
Phones, video games are just too addictive.

Communities just aren’t close-knit like the old days.
Thus the apathy factor.

At our neighboring district (Memorial), fans at most sports are virtually “non-existent”.
Ex. A couple hundred fans, if that, in a stadium that seats 7,200
That should give you some idea.

We hashed out many aspects of this topic last season.

To me, it’s the expectation in each of the high school coaches that the kids specialize and attend lifting sessions, open gym/field, play club.

Aside from the ‘natural’ athlete, it’s very hard not to be engaged with the group all year round and then just show up for tryouts. There’s very much a dedication factor unless you’re simply that ‘roll out of bed’ kid.

And on the topic of basketball, it’s simply the physical nature of the sport.

Off-season club opportunities in volleyball and soccer are hurting girls basketball numbers at a lot of schools outside of metro areas. I think it's as simple as that. With girls, basketball seems to be a distant third to those two sports.

Secondly, I'd look at the disparity in competition. In my area it seems like in a few leagues there are a few haves with a lot of have nots with no real middle-tier teams. The good teams regularly win league games by 50-70 points. That has to be a huge apathy factor for kids that have club options for other sports, and has to make it difficult to draw in more kids to participate.

Well, that opinion is lazy, I'll give you that. I'll get off your lawn, before you have a chance to yell at me.
