Was a youngster when he was elected, too young to give much thought to his character traits, but he seemed like a man who conducted himself with class and humility. I'll always remember the vomiting incident posted above and his famous '88 campaign promise of, "Read my lips. No new taxes."

He was a brilliant man, I'll say that. A brave man. A gentleman, as another said. A man born into both wealth and political power.

US House of Representatives, Chairman of RNC, Ambassador to the UN, Director of CIA, VPOTUS, and finally POTUS #41 - definitely a highly accomplished man.

Youngest combat Navy pilot in WWII, iirc. He didn't hide in the Air Guard as he had later enabled his son to do during the Viet Nam war. He represented Texas' 7th District in the US House of Representatives as the Viet Nam war ramped up, from '67-71. I'm not familiar with his voting record or Committee service, but I feel certain that he had an macro- agenda in VN along with his micro- one.

Empowered/"created" Saddam Hussein in Iraq to occupy Khomeni of Iran when he was leading the CIA. Hussein was well known even at that time to have been the ruthless former protege' of a Nazi collaborator. Later put a hit on Hussein when he could no longer manage him.

Scrubbed the Watergate scandal to limit the damage ? We'll never know.

As VeeP, ran the "War on Drugs" even as Ollie North ran Iran/Contra. Mr Pleasant former CIA Director had quite a personal network, no doubt. (Not an Al Gore dithering VeeP)

Directed the writing of NAFTA, dropped it in Clinton's lap - just like his son dropped TARP in Obammy's lap.

As President 41, he was the first saleman of the global economy - or as he called it, "a 'new world order' ". Many years earlier, when the wealthy decided to undercut the working class, he had been the point man for normalizing relations with Communist China (even as he continued support for boycotting Cuba), a precursor to today's slave labor market there. He may be one of the primary reasons Trump got cross-Party traction with "America First", as Trump trampled GHWB's soft boy, Jeb.

In retirement, hired Karl Rove to assasinate Anne Richards' character so his son could become the Governor of Texas. Later got Karl to pull the same routine on fellow pilot combat vet John McCain so he could become the Republican nominee in 2000. Must be OK because McCain was AF ?

He may have been a good man. Might have been the Devil, too.

Found this -
Quote:
In 1966, Bush ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from Houston's Seventh district. Running as a moderate Republican, he won the election with more than fifty percent of the vote. He was reelected in 1968. In Congress, Bush gained a seat on the coveted Ways and Means Committee, which was rare for a freshman congressman. He supported the Vietnam War and voted for parts of President Johnson's Great Society program, including the Civil Rights Bill of 1968 to outlaw discrimination in housing, a courageous vote for a congressman from Texas.

The last of his kind and the end of an era. They all had some skeletons in the closet but they were kept there for the "good of the country". Some are glad for the end of the "good old boys" network. I wonder sometimes looking at today's political landscape.

Look at how the office holders since him have brought the office down to where it is today.

RIP Mr. President.

He's better than every President who's come after him, and that will probably be the case for the foreseeable future. So he has that going for him.

Domestic and economic policy - TRUMP!!! Obviously. Not even close.

As a public orator, Bush was a fail. The perpetually clipped syntax that played as the reading of a pre-first-draft outline for a thesis was beyond lame. He was no more coherent than Herr Drumpf is today, just pleasant instead of an offensive blowhard. As a communicator, Bush couldn't carry Clinton's lunch box to work, so to speak. Even Obama could rise up and be compelling compared to GHWB, although Obummer also too often spoke as if he was dropping of a series of conceptual sound bites.

As a nuts and bolts, boots on the ground statesman, he was unmatched. The combination of deep knowledge and one-on-one skills may never be equalled in our lifetimes. What he did in so rapidly forming an international consensus to sweep Saddam out of Kuwait was amazing when one considers the chaos of international politics.

As a political negotiator, excellent and incredibly connected on the money side. Made Romney look minor league.

If he had ever decided to use his talents to actually put America First and make the benefit of ordinary Americans paramount, he could have been Teddy-Roosevent-great. Too bad that it would have taken WWIII for him to ever represent the top 67% of our nation. He saw the whole picture - socio-political economics - with 20/20 vision. Always a 5%er at heart and action.

He was an elitist, first and foremost. He became a smooth, behind the scenes, semi-spook, politically adroit and empowered version of what his father Prescott Bush - in league with JP Morgan and the duPonts - had intended Smedley Butler to become - a strong right arm for the 1%. Butler would have been a hammer in that arm, GHWB was a scalpel.

With Trump's current priorities, we'd have needed to fit a fifth head on Mt. Rushmore for GHWB. In the practical reality of his public service, meh. Thank God Perot blew up his re-election shot. Much as Obama did, I hate to think of what he may have pulled in a second term, unconcerned with re-election popularity.

RIP, Poppy "Magog" Bush, if you can.

Was always confused how anyone could vote for both Obama & Trump considering they share near zero policy positions. But the one thing they do have in common is an incredible cult of personality. When you keep that in mind, as well as the intellect of the sort of person who would flip flop between two polar opposite world views on a whim, it is no longer confusing.

Not really. In fact it has been well documented but for a guy like you I understand how you would not get it.

I also find it amusing how every time Neo posts a couple cheerleaders come to slurp. You always play follow the leader or just on here?

Lots of people held their nose and voted for Trump. Trump got a lot of anybody-but-Hillary votes. Trump understands the anxiety created by the immigration issue.

None of that applies to a personality cult.

If you had an anyone but Hillary mindset, there's really no intelligent reason you would have voted for Obama. Their policy positions were nearly identical.

He was a good President but not that good. Lets be honest - his election was actually Reagan's third win.
