Grey Cup

Watching the Grey Cup between Toronto and Calgary. Being played in Ottawa in a "Winter Wonderland". Lots of slipping and sliding.
DeVier Posey of Toronto, prior of Ohio State, was the receiver on a Grey Cup record forward pass of 100 yards.
Fun game to watch.

Sure is. Far more entertaining than that Bengals/Browns pukefest earlier in the day.

Truly wide open football. Just saw a 109 yard fumble return. With four minutes To go. It’s tied at 24

Unbelievable change of momentum there. Calgary moving the ball down to score and a 105(?) yard fumble return for a touchdown and ensuing two-point play ties it at 24 with 4 minutes to go.

Such an incredible back and forth. The huge fumble return. The field goal. Calgary going downfield quickly and instead of playing it safe for the FG, they throw it deep into the endzone with double coverage and get picked off with, what, 8 seconds left?

Especially after Calgary's loss last year to Ottawa in similar circumstances (last second tie goes to OT, losing to Ottawa on a highlight reel catch in OT), it's just amazing it happened to them again.

Though, Calgary and Seattle both belong in the group of teams not knowing how to play at the end of a close title game.

Great game, I love the CFL. And their website cfl.ca has great game recap highlights so it makes it easy to follow. Lots of guys with Ohio ties doing well up there

Loved the game!

Too bad the NFL won't play outdoors in bad weather for games like this. Packers-Colts freezer game type!

Seattle-Denver was in East Rutherford, New Jersey a few years ago.

But, aside from that one-time thing, I don't see them doing another northern outdoor game. For a few reasons. Most northern cities have domes and can host that way (Minnesota, Indianapolis, Detroit), aren't big enough (Cleveland, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, etc), or they just haven't shown any interest (Chicago's renovated Soldier Field).

MetLife got it because it was a hugely expensive new stadium (which if you've been there is nothing that special really), and had TWO owners pitching the game there.

I covered many a Grey Cup when freelancing for various media outlets in Canada. Even if you're not a fan of the CFL, I'd urge everyone to attend one just once, and go for the festivities in the days surrounding the game. It is a blast! I covered a few in weather like the one on Sunday. One of my favorites was in Regina, Saskatchewan back in 1995. It involved the only U.S. team to win a Grey Cup, the Baltimore Stallions, against the Doug Flutie-led Calgary Stampeders. It was played in subfreezing temps in 35 mph winds. Here's a clip, and yes that is Gus Johnson calling the play-by-play (For a real treat watch the punt return at the end of the clip!):

One Canadian rule I love is the punt rule. The return man is given a 5-yard halo (there is no downing the ball by the kicking team, the return team MUST recover it). However, any player that lines up BEHIND the punter is free to recover the punt as well. So, there's a limit of time for the return team to recover it uncontested before any player lined up behind the punter reaches the punt themselves.

Another cool rule, and one of the original rules of football though not in the U.S. game anymore, is that the returner can punt the ball back to the kicking team. I saw that happen a few times, and even saw the return team actually score a single (aka a rouge). It was a game between Calgary and Hamilton. Calgary was kicking from deep in their own territory, the Hamilton returner fielded a short kick and kicked it back. The ball landed in the end zone and was not returned. Calgary conceded the single. It was a pretty impressive play.

Technically, that's legal in the U.S. game as well, but there's no point to doing it. Nobody would willingly give up possession. In the Canadian game, the single point makes a huge difference.

It almost has an old-fashioned college gameday feel to it with all the festivities and the parade.
