Playing the same team twice in the regular season?

Can two teams play each other twice?

I recall this happening before and only the first game counting toward harbins, but I can’t find that language anywhere on the OHSAA website.

There are rules about changing a schedule but they wouldn’t apply here. If both games are on the schedule prior to the start of the season, do they both count?

Yes they can.

I personally wouldn't like it one bit.

Yes. They both count for computer points. Happened recently with Hilltop and Cardinal Stritch.

NOthing in the bylaws seem to say you cannot so as HSFB coach says it is allowable.

I don't even like a rematch in the playoffs let alone playing a team twice in the regular season. I imagine if two teams cannot find a game and already play, why not instead of having an open week.

I swear I remember St. Edward and Austintown Fitch playing twice in a season during the early '90s, but I could be wrong.

Elder played Moeller twice years ago when neither team could find anyone else willing to play. Only one counted as a "league game".

This doesn't happen much anymore, but it used to happen quite often.

- Elder and Moeller played twice in 1991, with Elder winning 23-7 at home in week 6 and then winning 20-14 at Moeller in Week 9.
- Austintown Fitch and St. Ed's played twice in 1992; Fitch won 33-25 in week 4 in Lakewood, and then won again 28-22 at home in week 7.
- In the Midwest Athletic Conference between Ansonia and Bradford leaving in '78 and Delphos St. John's joining in '82, teams would often play twice in the same season (e.g. in 1980, St. Henry and New Bremen played twice, as did Parkway/Coldwater and Minster/Marion Local).
- The East Suburban Conference in the late 90's, when it was down to 5 teams had instances of this (e.g., 1998: Ledgemont played Southington and Lutheran East twice each, and in 1999, Ledgemont/Southington played twice again, as did Ashtabula St. John/Lutheran East).
- In 1979, the Johnny Appleseed Conference, in its final season, had four teams (Clear Fork, Ontario, Lexington, and Loudonville), and each played the other twice.

I'm sure there are other instances, but didn't used to be as rare as one might think.

Ashtabula St John played Crestline twice last year.

Rivals East Knox and Danville use to play twice one game early one at the end.

Thanks everyone. I could’ve sworn only the first game counted. Not sure what situation I’m thinking of.

As of now, it's happening twice next season.

Loveland and Milford = Weeks 3 and 5
Newbury and Pymatuning Valley = Weeks 4 and 7

How does this happen? I get the big Powerhouse Schools and people not wanting to play them.

This is just Lazy on all these AD's!

I know that Milford has greatly improved their program but they still aren't a juggernaut. I know with the GMC playing 8 conference games it's harder for the bigger schools in Greater Cincinnati to get games past week two but that seems like a weak solution IMHO.

This is Newbury's last year as a school. Finding a single game just for this year is impossible. So, a home-n-home this year isn't that bad. Plus, they're not a good team and are trying to go out with a bit of a positive. So, they're not looking to 'test' themselves against anyone. Playoffs aren't an option. They just want ten games that they're going to be competitive in.

New league members for 2020 might play a part. Not being able to agree to a two year home/away commitment could cause issues.

I never have thought about this but since it has been brought up I think it is a great idea. Play your rival game 1 and game 10 every year home and away. See who improves more during the season. Interesting concept.

...years ago (maybe Ytown can verify) but I seem to recall Mooney & Ursuline playing twice in the same season.

If you ever find some historical schedules of teams, it was actually fairly common for a team to play their rival twice. Since the gate was the only form of money coming in. The rivalry game is what made the most. So you'd see a team play home and home against just that one team.

It was in the 1968 football season. Mooney and Ursuline left the City Series after the 1967/68 school year for the Steel Valley Conference but they would not be eligible for the SVC football title until the 1970 season. In 68 none of the City schools were on Mooney or Ursuline's schedule and they ended up playing each other twice. Even with the 2 games against the Irish Mooney still only played 9 games that year. They split the pair that season with Mooney winning the 1st game 36-6 and the Irish bouncing back to take the rematch 16-0. Only a 46-point swing.

The Cardinals and Irish did play each other twice in the 1990 & 95 seasons but of course the 2nd game both seasons was in the 1st round of the playoffs. Mooney won all 4 of those games.

Maxie can only hope to improve
After Canton McKinley received the death penalty in 1962 by the OHSAA for recruiting violations, Massillon Washington and the Bulldogs played twice during the 1963 season. In addition, the Tigers and Bulldogs played twice during the 1890's and the early 1900's. After that, the only times the two schools played twice in the same year was the six times they met in the playoffs. (1980, 1994, 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2012)

Eh.
Season is too short to play the same team twice.

52-0 Crestline and 18-16 Crestline. Did they play their backups in the rematch or something?

I have no Idea. Maybe Crestline had some players out due to injury or something in the 2nd matchup.

Long before they merged, Ashtabula High School and Ashtabula Harbor used to play twice in the same season, with one of the match-ups always coming on Thanksgiving Day. This ended sometime in the 1950's I believe.

I am pretty sure The GCL schools would try and make it work with Milford and Loveland.
