Huber Heights Wayne 49 Fairmont 44

Huge battle tonight in Huber Heights as the 6-1 Fairmont Firebirds traveled to take on the 5-2 Wayne Warriors. This was a must win game for Wayne as they were sitting at #10 in region 3.

Wayne started off first with the ball and used a balance attack and easily moved the ball down field as McKee would hit Bom from 10 yards out as Wayne took a 7-0 lead. Fairmont was able to get a couple of first downs but was stopped and punted the ball away. Wayne's 2nd drive was similar to the first as they had no trouble moving the ball and this time it was Nelson taking the hand off for 3 yards and a TD, 14-0 Wayne. Following a quick stop the Wayne offense was at it again and early in the 2nd qtr it was once again Nelson from 9 yards out 20-0 Wayne.

Fairmont stuffed again and forced with a 4 and 2 around the 23 yard line they fake the punt. The runner is hit at the line to gain and makes the first down by an inch. A couple plays later it was Deglow finally breaking free and going 73 yards as the skies opened up for a TD, 20-7 Wayne. Wayne would fumble the ball on their first play setting up the Birds in great field position. It did not take long for Deglow to plow into the end zone this time from 8 yards out and all of a sudden we have a game.... 20-14. Fairmont would take advantage of the downpour with an onside kick that they would recover. A few plays later once again Deglow from 8 yards out and Fairmont is up 21-20.

Wayne's offense could not do a thing in the heavy rain as now passes were being dropped and they were forced to punt. Something they had not done in some time. Following a great punt it looked like Fairmont was just going to run out the clock but Deglow broke free against as he had become possessed going 71 yards for the TD, 28-20 Fairmont at the end of the half.

Fairmont's band decided not to play because of the rain and went home. The rain would finally stop for awhile as the 3rd qtr started with Fairmont having the ball. Focusing on Deglow a pitch to Jackson caught the Wayne defense off guard and he rambled 43 yards deep into Wayne territory. Deglow would finish it off with a 4 yard run, 35-20 Fairmont. That was 35 straight points by Fairmont is just over 9 minutes of play.

The Wayne crowd though started to get fired up and loud trying to fire up the Wayne team. The rain had stopped and the passes were connecting again as the Warrior offense was back. Wayne gets back into the game when Nelson goes 6 yards for a TD, 35-27 Fairmont. Needing a stop the Wayne defense just couldn't slow down the Firebirds run game as they moved the chains but deep into Wayne territory the defense came up big inside the 10 and got the stop. Rohm would come out and drill a 23 yard FG to put Fairmont up 38-27.

It did not take long for Wayne to answer as McKee was firing on all cylinders using the air and his feet to move the chains. Wayne would score as McKee finds Victoria from 7 yards out on the first play of the 4th qtr to inch Wayne closer. Wayne went for 2 and they made it as McKee finds the freshman Brown for the conversion. 38-35 Fairmont.

With the Wayne crowd in a frenzy the Warriors finally got a break forcing a fumble. Wayne would cash that in as Nelson took the hand off 13 yards to put Wayne back up 42-38. Once again the Wayne defense forced a fumble as the rain had returned. With all the momentum now with Wayne the Warriors took time off the clock moving the chains and finished the drive on a Nelson 6 yard run with 2:47 left. 49-38 Wayne.

Fairmont was not done though as they broke off long run after long run and then used a rare pass, the first one of the game for them, to score as Miller hit Hall who broke a tackle and took it 20 yards for the score. Fairmont would miss the 2 point conversion.... 49-44 Wayne.

Fairmont would fail on the onside kick but Wayne was not able to get a first down and was forced to punt. A great punt pinned the Firebirds deep. While they were able to muster a few first downs the clock was winding down. A bad snap doomed any chance of a Fairmont comeback as Wayne came away with a huge win 49-44. Wayne improves to 3-0 in the GWOC and can win the title out right with a win next week at Springfield.

This was a crazy game. I do not know if Wayne has ever won a game in which they gave up 35 straight points to an opponent. Wayne's playoff hopes survives another week.

Game Stats:

Total Yards: Wayne 439 Fairmont 534
Rushing: Wayne 213 Fairmont 496
Passing: Wayne 226 Fairmont 38
Turnovers: Wayne 1 Fairmont 3 (actually, it was kind of 3 for each team as Fairmont recovered an onside kick as well as faking a punt for a first down.....)

There was only 4 penalties in this game. Fairmont had 2 for kicking the ball out of bounds on a kick off and Wayne had 2 from jumping off sides....

Individual stats for Wayne...

Where’s the defense for Wayne. This team will not go very far.

Fairmont was disguising the ball carrier very well and Wayne did a very poor job of tackling last night. I’m proud of the resilience that the Warriors showed last night! They took Fairmont’s best punch and still got off the mat to pull out this game. I am also proud of my fellow Wayneiacs that stayed for the entire game. The Warriors feed off the fans’ support and those that stayed didn’t disappoint.

In 2013 I remember them making a big come back vs Centerville. I think it was like 35-14 and Wayne won 42-35. Something like that

I want to know when is the last time you’ve heard of a team winning after giving up 35 unanswered points? Lots of youth on this team. McKee was 20-24… I saw 3 drops that hit receivers in the hands. The game last night will only make this team tougher these last couple weeks… should be fun to watch!

Fairmont is edging closer. It's good for our league and division.

Team had 500 yards rushing and lost? , and the team that gave up 5 Hundy on the ground won? WOW . Is this Farirmont team vastly improved from the one that lost by 35 to Hilliard Bradley in round one of the play-offs last year? Well Defense doesn't seem that much improved as they gave up 50 that game too.

Easily the best team Fairmont has had in years. They returned most of what they had from last years team, and they definitely look improved as does Wayne in some ways. Wayne's offense is very explosive and more balanced than they were the last couple of years. They are capable of putting up 40+ on anyone when they are clicking. Wayne's issue has been an inconsistent defense this year, mostly due to giving up too many big plays. If Wayne can keep their momentum going and get into the playoffs they will be a very tough out in Region 3 this year.
