I think with Gotto as the head coach, they will continue to have solid players ready to step in when their time comes. Higher level interest in the program added to solid strength and conditioning will lead to sustained success.

Coach Nickol EARNED the right to become a head coach and most Magic fans will root for him except vs the Magics. Good luck Irish. One of our finest opponents with many great games in the series... Beat Massillon in game 1...

The Magics looked good on both sides of the ball Saturday against Orville. The Magics I believe had 4 touchdowns and held Orville scoreless, if my memory serves me correctly.

Blue Devils this year the same as years past will be determined by the first 3 games. If they can win early they will gel in to a playoff contending team, If they stumble well could be a tough season. Meaning a young O & D line will be the factor. All other areas will be solid putting emphasis on the trench guys. Coaches and players so far this year have advanced in learning the playbook coach V has installed and should score more if protected enough. Defense- linebackers and D backs will be called upon to keep order and fill holes consistently til front line gets going. I believe a winning season can be had and a playoff berth achieved if all comes together. 7-3 record

Don't know if "young" is the correct word for the OL/DL. It is my understanding most of them will be upperclassmen with maybe (1) underclassmen in the mix. Maybe "inexperienced" at the varsity level is a better word to use here. These players have all played line and got reps on the JV squad and some at the varsity level.

Hearing that Tallmadge lost a few Freshmen to the local recruiting schools that might have had a shot at playing Friday night this year.

Tallmadge preview:

Tallmadge hopes to continue success on the gridiron

Quote:
The 2018 team features baseball players, basketball players and wrestlers.

If you’re a student at Tallmadge High School, it’s highly likely you’re a mutli-sport athlete.

So if you play for the football team, the players will have other priorities to address besides their duties on the gridiron.

Fortunately, third-year Blue Devils head coach Alan Vanderink has no issues with such circumstances.

In fact, he embraces them.

“I don’t want anybody to play just football,” Vanderink said. “We encourage them to play other sports.”

Tallmadge seeks more than regional run: 2018 football preview and camp visit

Quote:
As the dirt kicks up this month around Tallmadge High School, a new football stadium is being built.

It will not be ready until next year, but the renovation job is complete for the program that will play there.

Any news on the following programs:

Copley
Highland
Kent Roosevelt
Revere
Aurora

Odd how little is being posted on these 5 programs. Are they going to have off years? Is the SLA going to be down this year? Seems the only discussion is about Barberton and Tallmadge. Are they the clear front-runners this year?

I watched the first half, Magics Varsity couldnít get much going on offense, and defense was so-so. Itís still only pre season so they may not have wanted to show too much and work on the plays they had trouble with.

they will be fine. Not a lot of varsity experience there. It will take a few games to get going but they will get better as the season goes along.

It will be like 2015 or 2016. Winning season, possible playoff berth

Tallmadge won 27-15 in one half of action

Tallmadge dominated the scrimmage early. Scored TDs on 3 of their first 4 drives.

Streetsboro had five 3-and-outs to start the scrimmage. They scored 2 TDs on their last two drives.

Teeling, Amato, Grassie, and Kanatzar had TDs for Tallmadge. #6 had two TDs for Streetsboro.

Highland tied Hudson 7-7. Highland first scrimmages were Avon Lake and Brecksville. Coaches being very conservative with play selection, resting starters, saving packages. I would say Highland would beat Avon Lake or Brecksville. They would have their hands full with Hudson. Highland has skill that can score or gash teams anytime, if blocking holds... but thatís a big question. Defense is surprisingly good so far. Highland will contend in the SLA and make playoffs, IF they can stay healthy.... very thin.

Magics are young and inexperienced, they do have a few studs on offense and defense. Will be competitive in SLA, but defending the championship will be hard with the talent of the SLA.

I think Highland, Tallmadge, Barberton, and Copley are the front runners in the SLA this season.

Don't know how you could count Copley as a front runner in SLA. Word is they are small, inexperienced, and not very deep. 6-4 team a year ago lost qb, top rb, & basically all the experience and size from a talented OL & DL. Return one OL starter from that group. It seems in general quite a few SLA teams are in the process of rebuilding, not just Copley.

Seems like alot of question marks heading into the season. Not really sure what to make of the SLA. Maybe they will surprise everyone with a strong year top-to-bottom.

Anymore opinions on these week 1 games?
