2017 Cadet World Team Trials

Big weekend for the young guys with the Cadet World Team Trials this weekend. Here's some quick hits on the top 5ish guys in each weight and a list of OH guys.

Cadet Freestyle-

42kg:
Ohio guy Cole Skinner is my favorite since he is the only name I know here. Kase Mauger is another guy here who did well last year.

46kg:
This weight is stacked. Cadet World champ Kurt McHenry is the favorite, but Jeremiah Reno, Andrew Chambal, and Cullen Schreiver are all pretty good guys. Think McHenry takes this weight though.
Ohio entries not named- Dustin Norris

50kg:
Two Ohio guys, Julian Tagg and Lucas Byrd are in contention here. Trevor Mastrogiovanni is pretty good, as is Sam Latona and Anthony Clark. Gimme Mastrogiovanni here in an open weight.
Ohio- Jack Stanley, Oscar Sanchez

54kg:
Pretty good group here as well. 2016 Cadet World team member Aaron Cashman returns, with Brody Teske, Gabe Tagg, and Jakob Camacho looking to take that spot. I never think Cashman will win, but he usually does, so I’ll pick him here.
Ohio- Alec Walker, Angelo Rini, Brendon Fenton

58kg:
Maybe the weight I’m most interested in. Nick Raimo, Andrew Alirez, Carson Manville, Matt Lee, Josh Saunders, Bryce Andonian, Beau Bartlett, and Jesse Vazquez are all at this weight and all hammers. I like a bunch of these guys, but I think Nick Raimo wins here, with Bartlett second.
Ohio- Jordan Decatur isn’t registered but I heard he will be here, another guy that will challenge for the top spot.

63kg:
Sammy Sasso finished runner up here last year to Cadet World silver Vito Arujau, and he is my pick to win a weight that’s kinda lacking in depth. Jacori Teemer is another good guy here, as are Mason Phillips and Malcolm Robinson.
Ohio- Andrew Garr, Gavin Bell, Jared Viancourt, Mitch Collica, Padraic Gallagher, Victor Voinovich

69kg:
Sneaky good weight. Fargo champ Jared Franek, Ohio guys Connor Brady and Sam Dover, Mason Reiniche, Cam Amine, and Will Lewan are all tough. I’m picking Franek here over probably Brady.
Ohio- Brett McIntosh, Nevan Snodgrass, Nicholas Burgard, Noah Ratliff

76kg:
Our second returning Cadet World medalist is here in 2016 bronze medalist Travis Wittlake. His toughest competition is Aaron Brooks, with Julian Ramirez, Edmond Ruth, Michael O’Malley and Pat Kennedy behind them. I think Wittlake wins here and goes for another medal.
Ohio- Jacob Lagoa, Lucas Turner

85kg:
Recent Ohio State commit Gavin Hoffman is here with Jersey boy Ryan Karoly as the top two guys. I’m pretty sure one of these two guys will win and I’ll pick Karoly in maybe an upset.
Ohio- Michael Baker

100kg:
With Gable Steveson outgrowing the weight, someone else will have to hold down 100kg. Cohlton Schultz is my favorite if he shows up, but he might just go Greco after already making the Junior Greco team. Daniel Kerkvliet is my pick is Schultz goes Greco only.
Ohio- Tyler Stein

125kg:
Non-world weight, only 6 entries so far, with Jordan Earnest from Ohio competing.

Cole Skinner wins match two and will represent the US at 42kg!

Can't wait for him to get in some camps and learn some turns. Skinner with McHenry in camp for a week learning that trap arm gut? Would do wonders for Skinner.

Jordan Decatur PINS Carson Manville (maybe knocking Manville out in the process) to make the World team at 58kg. He looked really good, will be in medal contention in Greece.

Four Ohio wrestlers on the Cadet World Team:

Lucas Byrd - Cadet Word Greco Roman Team. 50kg.
Cole Skinner - Cadet World Freestyle Team. 42 kg.
Julian Tagg - Cadet World Freestyle Team. 50 kg.
Jordan Decatur - Cadet World Freestyle Team, 58 kg.

Seasons Club (run out of Brecksville H.S.) had two Cadet World Teamers (Tagg & Decatur). Pretty impressive for a local freestyle club.

Also future Ohio State buckeye, Gavin Hoffman also made the Cadet world Freestyle team.

Congrats All!

I think this is a pretty good team. Not as good as last years I think, but still some good medal chances. I think McHenry is the best medal shot, and wouldn't be surprised to see him on top of the podium at Cadet Worlds. We tend to do well in the upper weights, and I think Wittlake, Hoffman, and Kerkvliet all will do well. I didn't know what to expect from Teemer, but he majored Sasso twice so he will be a player at Worlds; Decatur will be in the hunt too. Initially I don't think Tagg, Howard, or Lewan will medal, but they could surprise, and 42kg is too much of a tossup for me to say how Skinner will do.

Looks like a great group from Ohio. Were there any other Ohio placers besides these four World Team members?

There is video on YouTube of the cadet world members soon after their victories yesterday. You get a glimpse of how hard these kids have worked for a chance to represent the USA. Best of luck in Athens!
