Will your school have a Freshmen Team?

Does your school have a freshmen team or is it planning on having a freshmen team?

Post your team and if there are any changes from last year (ie having a team to not having a team or vice versa)

Nordonia always does.

Last chance for the rec players to see if they love the game enough to try to be serious, and a good place for the physically late developers to keep getting reps.

Any school with enough bodies to field a freshman team should find the money to do so, in my humble opinion. It's what HS athletics should be about - inclusion along side of competition.

The self-important baseball snob goofs that want to denigrate the quality of freshman ball need to get over themselves.

Gilmour Academy has a reserve team in addition to the JV.
It is basically the freshman who donít make Jv plus the Sophs who would just ride the bench on JV.
They play freshman and Jv teams. It works well.
The point is you never get stuck with not enough freshman for a frosh only team.

Copley will have a freshman team again this season. From what I have heard, a very good freshman turnout, which is great.

This^ is an excellent alternative for a small to mid-sized school that might have trouble fielding a single age team - or for anyone, really. There are always solutions out there.

One could even pitch a freshman or soph at one level and allow him to play a position or DH at another. A great scenario for player development with some kids.

I believe Barberton, and Tallmadge, and possibly Kent, were the only two SLA teams not to field a freshman team last year. I'm sure Yappi could confirm. It's always tough for the freshman to get anything close to a full schedule in during the season. Being last in the pecking order behind varsity & jv limits field availability, make up dates due to weather, etc. Freshman players talent can range from the select few who may play varsity, to a group who have only played local rec ball. It's literally a very diverse group for many schools. The key is allowing these kids to play as much as possible on the freshman level, in hopes they will develop their skills, and continue to play thru their high school years. Sadly, many end up quitting to soon.

This will be the second year in a row that Newark Catholic will not have a freshman team. We keep having these big freshman groups come in and then the kids fall off sophomore year. Hard to keep everyone playing when you have 19-20 kids.

Tallmadge hasn't had a freshmen team in several years. I'm guessing around 2011. They did play a few games against other freshmen teams in 2013 but I believe had a couple sophomores playing.

I've heard that Tallmadge will have 5-10 freshmen trying out. Only around 5-6 played Summer ball last year, so not sure of who the others might be.

Two years ago, Fisher Cath had a freshman team. Last year they fielded two reserve teams. This year they’re expecting to do the same. Not a “true” freshman team, but a lot of freshmen will have the opportunity to play on either of the JV teams.
