I never believed in Martell from the start as a Buckeye QB. I think they wanted to get him in the program and convert him to another position - a hybrid, maybe Harvin-esque, usage.

I would have helped him wise up. Nobody in his life gave him the word.

While traveling homeward through Missouri once when my two youngest sons were very little, we stopped after a few hours of driving at the home of my wife's great uncle. He had never met the boys, my wife's only children, so she really wanted him to be impressed both with little ones and her parenting skills. Her pep talk, of course, fell on selectively-deaf ears, and they were ripping around pretty good before long. She hooks the four-year-old by the arm to slow down to talk, and he's trying to wriggle off.

Her uncle asks, trying to sound serious, "Boy, do you have ants in your pants?"

My pride and joy takes his free hand, hooks his thumb in the elastic waist of his pants and shoots a look straight down the front. Snaps the waist loose, looks her uncle straight in the eye and says, "Nope. No underwear, either. I'm goin' commando-o-oh!!", and lets out a whoop as he runs after his brother.

My wife and her aunt and uncle are all looking at me at this point, for some odd reason.....

I think we've all gotten a little spoiled from the Tressel/Meyer years. You only know suffering if you had to live through the Cooper years. There's no happiness in a 2-10-1 world.

I posted this in Crusaders Martel transfer thread but it probably belongs here:

I wonder what Joe Burrows is thinking right now? While I suspect that he's happy with LSU, particularly since the Tigers will be in the national title hunt next year, you have to think he's doing a bit of "what if" thinking?

As an aside and I know I'll catch flak for this but in the end wouldn't it have been better for Ohio State to have declared Burrows the winner of last springs QB competition? I submit the Bucks would have done just as good as they did this year with Burrows at QB and next year they would be sitting pretty with a veteran dual threat QB at the helm.

Just figured that now that the football season is over and we're buried under snow this might start a good argument going.

Ohio State with Burrow very easily could have lost 4 games this year. Michigan becomes a dog fight because they don't destroy them on crossing routes and are thus unable to single out that one corner all game without Haskins' precision. TCU could have been lost the way our defense gave up huge plays. We probably don't put up 52 on Maryland with Burrow so that ends up a loss. Our D gave up 49 to Purdue so that's still a loss. Penn State, who knows, but I doubt Burrow goes in there and lights it up.

If you think the Bucs lose 4 games with Burrow at the helm then IMO they would have been just as likely go undefeated and make the college football playoffs. Obviously we'll never know.

As for the defense, sure it played poorly this year but some of that was the result of an offense that either scored quickly or went 3 & out a lot. Passing offenses in contrast to time consuming rushing offenses do put more pressure on their defenses.

But this "what if" is intended to look at the cumulative two year effect of naming Burrow the starter. And I still submit that the previous year would have been the same with either QB in charge but next year would have looked a lot brighter had Burrow been the QB.

Again I don't deny that Haskins was the better passing QB. But Burrow threw the ball well and was a better passer then JT Barrett while at the same time being a better runner then Haskins. I do agree with you that the Michigan game would have been the likeliest game to flip had Burrow been QB instead of Haskins. The other games you mention not so likely and who knows about Purdue.

Haskins and Burrow aren’t in the same stratosphere. Burrow ranked 12th out of 14 qbs in the sec this year in passing efficiency. I’m with Bluth here, this year’s team couldn’t run the ball for much of the season and was bad defensively. Without Dwayne 4 losses is very likely.

Does that "B" rating stand for"BE BETTER" that last year? Never was a Urban fan so win, lose or draw I am happy with this hire

If I remember correctly, Jim Tressel was probably considered a "B" hire and that seemed to work out pretty well.

At least they didn't hire a coach who got fired at a different school.
I would rather take a chance on an unproven rising star than a proven failed one.
Was Saban's hiring at Toledo considered an 'A' hire? I doubt it.
Was Urban's hiring at BG considered an 'A' hire? I doubt it. Hard to rate a first time head coach as an 'A' hire.

The successful smaller programs do take those chances on the unproven stars.

I am sure they know that if the hire goes well, it will be a 2-3 year cycle.

Best of luck to him. Given how poorly Belichick's coaching tree has performed, I really wonder how much his coordinators actually matter.

Two full years of Fields at QB in this offense should produce huge numbers.

It took me two weeks but my opinion of Urban has not changed in these weeks. Urban was a good judge of athletic ability and a great recruiter just as far as the act of coaching he reminded me of a John Cooper just not quite as bad. If he could keep his recruiting and then coached like Earl Bruce then we would have had something really special. (By the way Bruce's problem was he did a poor job when it came to recruiting, but man could and did he coach the average material he had.)
