The socio-economic change in landscape is WAY more powerful than 3 kids.

I saw an article in the other thread about new subdivisions popping up on the westside. These are the type of things that will keep Elder alive and competing long term.

That’s a separate discussion. I’m talking strictly about football, not the longevity of Elder as an institution. In the short term, Elder doesn’t need more kids to be competing with Colerain, WW. They need 3 kids on Defense who are stud athletes.

It's not separate. Elder's lifeline is enrollment. Always has been, always will be.

If there were at 950 students (regardless of demographic), they'd be competing just like they always have. The talent pool is there (just like it is for every other GCL school that competes for kids city-wide), they just refuse to expand the reach.

They WANT it to be the Catholic westside school. They WANT to continue to tell the legacy tales, they WANT kids to say it's their dream to play at the Pit. They think that stuff still sells.

If that's the case, then fine, but you're going to need to develop ALOT more internally if that's the case.

If they want to expand their footprint, that's fine too, but that requires a different type of investment.

I've seen neither. You can't have neither.

That's not true and hasn't been true for several years.

I said like 10 things in those 2 sentences. All of it isn't true in your eyes?

1) They'd be fine athletically with 900-950 students
2) Elder can choose to recruit the whole city. They don't. They may have expanded some, but not the whole city. They recruit the western half of the city.
3) They definitely want to tell the legacy story all the time. It's an article 2-3x times per year

What isn't true?

225 per 4 year average class and they're fine. It will never happen if people keep moving further away. Continued economic development of the westside is more important than where they recruit.

The economics of the westside, BY FAR, is the biggest hurdle for enrollment, which bleeds down to athletics. New development is crucial.

I disagree. If you add 100 kids to enrollment (roughly) and they’re still kids from Antoninous, Visi, Jude, Victory, they’re not competing at a noticeably higher level. The game has changed so drastically from when enrollment was 950. You need speed on the edges with the field being spread out. The kids coming from Feeders don’t have that level of speed and athleticism. Josh Jones is the last high profile athlete from the feeders. Bartley Thomas from Visi can be a special player. He’s already a stud wrestler as a Frosh.

The kids from the feeders never had that level of speed and athleticism. People have been saying that for 50 years.

So opponents 15-20 years ago didn't have speed? The same difference existed then as it does now. We don't have worse kids athletically, we just have less of them (and the opponents we're playing have more).

Elder has competed just fine over the years with these "non-athletic feeder kids".

The Spread Offense was not nearly as popular 15-20 yrs ago and other teams were also playing with just Feeder kids. That’s all changed, but that’s not necessarily bad, it just means it’s time to adapt.

They're a decade late.

"We coach who comes" - they hang their hats on statements like this as part of their deep down values.

At this point, you'd have to start thinking this is their choice, right?

I'm fine with this approach, but if they do this, they need more investment in internal development of athletes. I'm also fine if they change this approach, but that requires more internal investment in their admissions department. If they truly want to improve, it has to be one or the other.

If they are cool with being what they are, well, then not much is going to change.

If we’re talking football, they were ahead of the curve schematically, at least on Offense. They were the first GCL team to go full Spread.

They’ve definitely lagged in areas when it comes to bringing in talent, and that’s probably never going to change. I hate assigning so much importance to the Fitness Center, but I think that’s the only way they’ll bring these kids to them. Occasionally, they’ll have studs like the kid from Lawrence who almost fall into their laps by playing at a Traditional Feeder, but he’s the exception

You've mentioned Jones, Thomas, and the kid from Lawrence. Are any of these kids decidedly better than the best feeder kids from their classes?

Relative to their positions, yes they’re better than the other Feeder School kids.
