Southern California fire is 'out of control,' forcing thousands to evacuate

Quote:
Howling Santa Ana winds pushed a wildfire from rural hills into parts of the Southern California city of Ventura on Monday night and Tuesday with explosive speed, destroying dozens of buildings and forcing thousands of people to evacuate.

By Tuesday morning, the fire had burned about 45,000 acres in 13 hours, and some homes were ablaze in the northern part of Ventura -- a city of more than 100,000 people on the Pacific coast.

The fast-moving fire -- the largest of several wind-driven blazes in Southern California -- forced sheriff's deputies to knock on doors to warn residents to evacuate in the dark. About 150 buildings, including homes and an evacuated Ventura hospital, have been destroyed.

The shot on TV showing what the area looked like from space was sobering.
You could clearly see huge smoke plumes from 3 or 4 locations.

If they worked on fire prevention and hard as they do other liberal ideals may be they would be fewer and less severe. I have not been hearing how all these fires have started. Is it man or nature?

Dumb, this is a dumb statement. That's like saying Florida cities need to do a better job of preventing hurricanes.

Yeah, fire is part of a natural cycle in some areas, like earthquakes and vicious storms are in others. Fire prevention or quick suppression actually results in an accumulation of fuel that ensures a bigger eventual fire. Don't build there, or at least don't be surprised when you suffer loss. Definitely set aside your own funds as a region for bailing yourself out.

These events have always made me wonder what happened before we got there. Why weren't these places permanently scorched Earth? I'm not convinced these events are all that "natural." Seems some "man-mading" going on.

Did not Smokey the Bear say "Only you can prevent forest fires" I know that was years ago, so you are saying Smokey and Our Govt is Dumb? There is a big difference between fire and wind. Wind just makes fires burn faster and hotter. While researching the history of Smokey it was stated that 9 out of 10 forest ( now call wild fires) are "person caused" How many hurricanes are person caused? I bet I know the answer to that- Climate change

Is it any surprise a poster like 19AL63 can turn wild fires into a political rant? What a sad existence.

With 9 out of 10 fires being reported person caused all I was doing is questioning are these fires person caused and I also question if enough was being done to prevent said fires from happening. Since California is a D state I did question what the liberals were doing to prevent said fires. If it was a R state I would be ask if the conservatives were doing enough. I truly believe our country is in a sad state and I am old and sad to say I exist in it the way it is.

Fires aren't necessarily bad for these forests. Many of the trees and plants can't germinate with out them. People need to take stuff like this into account before building cities next to them.

I believe that lightning strikes are the cause of the majority of forest fires.

yup

I love this. It fits just so well in so many places -

Don't rebuild in a place subject to a fire renewal cycle. Duh. Or a mudslide, when it's too wet to burn some years. Duh. Often the same places and the same cycle. Duh squared.

No Federal disaster relief money that isn't paid back in full.

Smokey the Bear is from the generation that told us only poor hillbillies breast feed their children now, and that "formula" is wa-a-a-a-ay better. Just sayin'.....

Irresponsible behavior with campfires, etc, is bad, sure, but it's a complex issue.

Smokey says 9 out 10 person caused. I ask now has anybody said how these fires started? Anybody hear or know the answer? They are talking about several different fires and am I the only person that finds that strange. Nature all at once started several fires?

I've been mulling over in my mind whether it's a good or bad idea to use so much water trying to put these fires out

I question, what the California liberal state Govt is doing to prevent forest fires and I get ripped for making it political. Now comes Chelsea Handler and she says: "Just evacuated my house. It is like Donald Trump is setting the world on fire. Literaily and figuratively. Stay safe everyone. Dark times." And I am accused of turning things political?

Small after thought: My mothers maiden name was Handler. I sure hope I am not somehow related to this woman.

I had heard several days ago that they thought the high winds has knocked down power lines igniting the fire.

Saw this and thought it was interesting. The 9 out 10 wildfires being man-caused is still what is cited. No mention of smokey though.

Now would be a great time to jump on board of the California seceding thing. Would be epic to see the big Don get it started before they drain more resources from the rest of the US.

The Dems would have little shot at POTUS if those Electoral Votes were distributed evenly among the rest of the population. If they were just removed, no shot at all.
