What is safer for athletes, grass or turf?

I would like to ask coachs, fans and parents from schools with artifical turf their opinions on the safety differences between grass and turf for athletes. Thanks in advance!

Carl Spackler turf is the best. This is a hybrid. This is a cross bluegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, featherbed bent, and northern California sensemilla. The amazing stuff about this is that you can play 4 quarters on it in then take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus on this stuff.

Perfect grass is best. However, at High Schools now, you rarely get perfect grass.

I'd rather my kids play on turf every time.

This. I have seen some HORRIBLE grass fields. Ie. cow pastures. Bumpy etc. And many turn to mud pits in bad weather. Perfect natural conditions are great though.

The day after football ends, the Football board officially becomes the General Board,

The old Astro turf was okay but the black beads in the new stuff clogs the pipe.

This is just one of many studies about field turf and cancer. This has been a known issue for many years, however does not seem to garner much press.

A nice grass field is always safer, but kids will always prefer the speed and uniformity of a nice turf field. But as nice as turf is nowadays, if your foot gets caught in it, there's no chance that it can give way and save a possibly serious knee injury.

i think they both come with issues. i've seen a foot get tangled in grass and the ankle dislocated. however with the turf i've seen an uptick in acl sprains and tears.

This is the reality we face, especially here in Ohio where the weather is what it is, and the fact that most schools want their stadium(s) to serve many sports and multiple levels/genders of said sport.

A grass field like at crew stadium would be the best of both worlds I would think. But no way a high school could have and maintain a field like that.

Any HS that fields all 3 levels of football and both levels of soccer for each gender would have a difficult time having perfect grass beyond midseason. A dedicated groundskeeper and ample resources can keep it at a satisfactory level, but perfection would be a tall order.

From those I've talked to, soccer players prefer grass, football equipment managers love turf (easier to keep the uniforms clean). I've never thought to ask the football players which they prefer because, with their recent schedules, they so rarely play on grass anymore.

I have asked a dozen or so. Every single one of them prefers turf because he runs faster on it. And not a single lineman can remember falling down when being pushed backward into a turf clump. The holder and kicker would rather have concrete or nice level asphalt.
