If the OHSAA would have just stuck to 1 team per region, they would have eliminated all these blowouts.

Not with enough frequency to warrant adding 8 more teams, many with losing records, to the playoff structure.

^^^ I believe today was being sarcastic - but who knows!

I prefer 6 divisions, but I don't mind 7 - I know it's exciting for teams to make the playoffs, so to some degree the more-the-merrier approach that the ohsaa has had the past three decades makes sense.

However, I would dislike any increase in the number of teams who qualify (from what we have now) because it would make the regular season less important. And there are enough lopsided week 11 & 12 contests already.

Most schools in Ohio aren't the MAC. It's an honor to make the playoffs for most small schools. My home school (D6) went 8-2 and missed the playoffs for the first time in 7 years. We are in a conference that usually only gets run out of the playoffs by the MAC. Why make it harder on teams?
Not really: it does not give 224 teams a chance (that is, a chance that amounts to anything).

How many #8 seeds won a game this year? (None.) How many #7 Seeds won games? (6/28 in round 1, 2/28 in round 2 0/28 in round 3 - NONE won a region)

Only 1 #6 seed and one #5 seed won regions (both in the same division D3.)

In years past Marion Local has played in the State final entering as a 8 seed, Parkway as an 8 beat a 1 seed by 30, only to lose to St Henry in the 2nd round. St Henry won state. All of my examples will be from MAC country. There are 2 schools in the MAC this year that missed the playoffs, their only losses were to playoff teams, and they were as good or better than any of the other playoff teams I saw.

^^^ Today - I believe you're referring to the 2000 Parkway week 11 victory over 9-0 Waynesfield (or Waynesville). If I recall correctly Parkway posted a shutout but did not reach 30 points themselves. I think it was 27-0.

I could be wrong - and it doesn't make a lot of difference anyway I know - but wanted to add my 2 cents.

And yes ML reached the state final in D-VI in 2003 as an 8th seed (lost to Columbus Grove in a great 28-26 game), while SH won state in D-V the following year as an 8th seed.

I know as a MAC fan if you can get into the tourney, you will usually have a great chance to win.

Maybe so but I thought Liberty Benton was as good as any team ML has played all year. Esp. offensively.

Versailles lost to DJ and DJ did not make the play-offs.

^^^ Yes I realize V lost to DJ, but today had said that 2 MAC teams lost only to playoff teams.

That's why I said "if DJ made the playoffs."

I'm no football expert, but Liberty Benton's qb Austin May and receiver Will Poling seemed to be as good as any the Flyers have faced all year.

I was wondering what 2 teams he thought from the MAC that did not make the play-offs were as good as anybody in the play-offs. Sorry for the confusion.

Liberty Benton is a very good football team. Versailles stayed within 10 points of Marion, and Marion needed a touchdown late to put the game away. Seems I was wrong about who versailles lost too.

It would take too much research to calculate the extremely small incidence of this occurring but it has to be in the .0X percentage. (hundredths of one percent)

and the incidence of #8 and #7 seeds winning the tournament is 0 is it not?

^^^ And I don't know how in the world St. Henry was an 8 seed in D-V in 04.

They lost only to Coldwater, finishing 9-1 and in sole possession of 2nd place in the MAC (behind only 10-0 CW). I guess playing many D-VI schools - and the MAC having only 1 ooc game were factors in Harbin.

The Skins ended their dominant season at 14-1 and D-V state champs ... not a typical 8 seed at all.

I was in Waynesville for that game. Believe it was 1999. Also seem to recall a safety for Waynesville, maybe.

I was also at a Waynesville game some years later. It was week 10 of 2007. I was sitting next to Parkway scouts, who were drooling at the prospect of playing Waynesville the next week. Parkway ended up with a 8 - 2 record and finished in 9th place. Their loses were to Marion Local, and Coldwater, who both ended up besting a pair of Youngstown private schools in the State Championship games that year. Marion was 15-0, Coldwater was 14-1 that year. Parkway was as good, or better than most of the teams who did make the final 8, and I suspect would have made some noise if they could have avoided drawing their league mates.

Good memory.

In 1999, Parkway defeated Waynesville 27-2 in a DV Region 20 1st round matchup.

The reason I like open competition and hate the computer system. 30 years ago when they took 4 teams across the state,(chosen by points), they said they had the best four teams playing and crowned a State Champion. In this years finals only 5 of the 14 teams were 1 seeds in their Region. Then it was expanded to 8 teams. In this years finals only 3 of the 14 teams were 2 seeds in their Region. So 2/3rds of the teams playing on Saturday would not have made the playoffs in the 80's, and 40% of them wouldn't have made the playoffs in the 90's. The computer system is flawed, let the kids compete.

I quickly looked. Only 1 team this year was not a 4 seed or higher. I think only Tri-Valley was a 5 seed or less.

Looks like the system is working just fine.

That is correct and Tri Valley most likely would have lost to either Toledo Central or Dayton Trotwood Madison last week and then there would be ZERO seeds below #4 in the State finals.

Yea, I see your point, with only one outlier 5 seed making it. We could reduce the number of teams to 4 per Region. This would reduce these awful blowouts, and some unwanted competition.
