D IV State Championship: Steubenville (14-0) vs Clinton-Massie (13-1)

Not too surprised by this matchup. Can Steubenville get it done this year?

Yes they can and will. Saw Big Red and Massie play in 2015. Massie stayed in the game for a while then took it on the chin and collapsed. I expect the same type of game with Big Red winning by 14 or more.

Not basing it on 2015 at all. In predicting the same result that's all. And I'm sure Massie will give them a game. For a little while. Big Red just too fast and strong

Looking forward to this game, Clinton Massie, should be a great championship game. Time for Big Red to get its first Division IV Championship to go with its Division II and two Division III championships.

Let's hope the over bearing, over zealous, deplorable element can contain their ridiculous comments and not give Clinton Massie a psychological edge. Last year, Hartley's coach read all the brainless, ridiculous postings by Steubenville's deplorable element and it worked.

Let's not repeat the stupid comments and insulting stuff.

The difference from the 2015 game is the 2017 game will be on a neutral field.

Should be a good game both teams play strong D, Steubenville D is faster but the Massie will come out ready to go.

Both communities will bring a large crowd, both teams will want another state title to add to there collection.

Does Clinton Massie mix it up between pass and run this year or are they still heavy run?

Yup...you are right. Massie has a great coach and athletes and their fan base is impressive and classy. Really enjoyed the game in 2015. Difference then was more depth of talent for Big Red. They were able to wear CM down in the 4th quarter (a four hour bus ride to Steubenville didn't help their cause either). They have even more depth this year with bigger and faster offensive and defensive linemen. They shuttle multiple players into the game on nearly ever snap to keep players rested. Has worked well all year and expect the same in the Championship game. Two storied football programs going head to head for the title....couldn't ask for anything better.

These are both great representatives of Division IV football in Ohio, both teams will put it all on the field and I anticipate an outstanding championship game. I think this year's Big Red offensive and defensive lines will decide a great game.

Since CM was fortunate to get past such a weak JG team, one would assume that Steuby should win this pretty comfortably.

This should be a fun game to watch. I remember CM's memorable back to back state title wins a couple of years ago and Steubenville is one of those small school football powers from back in the day - like Ironton. I'll be in front of the TV for this one.

I will assume the Times Recorder is New Concord's newspaper of record since those were exclusively John Glenn highlights without a single positive play by Clinton-Massie, yet CM found a way to ... win the game.

But, the boxscore does provide an interesting accounting of the game...

-----------------------------------------------

Clinton Massie 28, John Glenn 21
Clinton Massie 7 0 7 14 - 28
John Glenn 0 14 7 0 - 21

Scoring Summary
First Quarter
CM - Luke Richardson 31 pass from Corey Stulz (Derick Carlisle kick), 2:36

Second Quarter
JG - Shane Bonner 8 run (Morgan Williamson kick), 11:21
JG - Bonner 10 run (Williamson kick), 3:48

Third Quarter
CM - Weston Trampler 3 run (Carlisle kick), 7:48
JG - Bonner 6 pass from Justin Heacock (Williamson kick), :56.7

Fourth Quarter
CM - Richardson 25 pass from Stulz (Carlisle kick), 8:41
CM - Richardson 46 INT return (Carlisle kick), 5:59

Individual Statistics
Rushing — Clinton-Massie: Christian Poynter 10-24, Tyler Beam 7-50, Cody Collingham 7-29, Weston Trampler 6-13. John Glenn: Shane Bonner 20-84.

Passing — Clinton-Massie: Corey Stulz 2-8-56-2-1. John Glenn: Justin Heacock 20-43-282-1-1.

Receiving — Clinton-Massie: Luke Richardson 2-56. John Glenn: Joseph Clifford 4-133, Casey Smith 4-40, Shane Bonner 4-12, Ben Larson 3-43, Jake Radcliffe 2-34, Gavin Thompson 2-15, Reece Perkins 1-5.

Team Statistics
Passing
Clinton Massie — 2-for-8, 56 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception
John Glenn — 20-for-43, 282 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception

Rushing
Clinton Massie — 30 attempts, 116 yards (3.9 ypc)
John Glenn — 20 attempts, 84 yards (4.2 ypc)

Total Yards
Clinton Massie — 38 plays, 172 yards (4.5 ypp)
John Glenn — 63 plays, 366 yards (5.8 ypp)

Turnovers
Clinton Massie — 3
John Glenn — 2

-----------------------------------------------

Obviously, John Glenn dominated the statistical side of the ledger which is very little comfort today, I'm sure. But it does seem kind of odd. Not only did John Glenn have over double the total yardage, they even won the turnover battle. I know CM had the pick-six late that seemed to be the thing putting them over-the-top, but this is still one of the weirder boxscores for a winner that I've seen in a while.

Clinton Massie only completed two of their eight pass attempts, but both passes went for touchdowns (31 yards and 25 yards, respectively). I'd be curious to see time of possession.

I noticed that too, looking strictly at the stats and ignoring the score you'd think John Glen won the game.

Hey Fishnet...... it’s about time you finally recognized. I feel bad for JG kids, none of you fans thought they could win. But with such limited success with football program I guess you didn’t believe in your kids or their coaches. I know when you have to own your quote of “such a weak JG team” you will pass it of as sarcasm or as being facetious. You always talk out of both sides of that massive cakehole of yours.....and your mea culpa will fall on deaf ears. Go attend a basket practice and tell us if any of that very nice basketball program you have any guys that will play football next year. Or go take your sarcastic and facetious self over to your bowl and lie down.
