I agree. I think 6-4 gets them in but this one needs to be one of the six.

I can't get a fix on StV this year. Seems like there is lots of enthusiasm but not quite the same as some of their best years. Is this one of those years that a 5-5 record or 10-0 record is a real possibility either way?

I copied this from a post I made on Oct. 22, 2015 in the playoff theme Tri-Valley at Youngstown Boardman.

I'm going to start with a little bit of a history lesson on Tri-Valley and get to this year's team later. Tri-Valley is a member of the Muskingum Valley League. The league was formed in the 1930's and is one of the oldest in the state. In the late 1960's three small communities (Dresden, Frazeysburg/Nashport, Adamsville) consolidated to form Tri-Valley. Dresden was already a member of the MVL so they stayed in the MVL. The 3 communities were basketball crazy including 2 state titles for Dresden and 1 runner up for Frazeysburg. For most of Tri-Valley's history they were an area basketball power. But, from Tri-Valley's beginning as a district to the early 2000's they were very mediocre in football. Only 1 league title in 1989. Some years they were the league doormat. They were among the larger schools during that time, but not the largest. Dresden is the home of Longaberger woven wooden baskets. It 's hay day was in the 1990's and early 2000's and the district student population grew. It has been the largest school in the league about the last 12 years.

In 2004, Tri-Valley hired Justin Buttermore as the head football coach. He graduated from West Branch, was an assistant coach at Dover for a year or two, and was the defensive coordinator for Hillard Davidson when hired by Tri-Valley.

He took the team to it's first playoff in 2006 and the Scotties ("Dawgs") have made the playoffs every year since with the exception of 2008. Tri-Valley's in a 9 team league and plays 8 league games a year. Their last league loss on the road was October 21, 2005. They currently have a 42 game league win streak with 5 undefeated league title's in a row.

Posted Nov. 2, 2015.

Besides Tri-Valley, the MVL has two D3 schools, four D4 schools, one D5 and one D6. Until August, Tri-Valley was D3. The "new" numbers (after many city schools complained about community schools counting in their numbers) bumped Tri-Valley up to being the smallest school in D2 (361 boys).

In the MVL, Crooksville (D6) has a football championship from the late 1970s. New Lexington (D4) has a couple pool championship from the 1970's before their were playoffs. Sheridan (D3) lost to Mooney in the state championships in 1987. Yes, the league is mostly smaller schools, but until the last decade it was a fairly competitive league. Tri-Valley's program has advanced significantly under Buttermore. At the same time, the level of teams put on the field by most other MVL schools has declined IMO.

So why don't we leave the league..............no good option. An hour east of Columbus and leagues there would not want to travel that far. Leagues east and north of us are not particularly stable and still have a lot of D3 and D4 teams. The East Central Ohio League (with Dover, New Philly) and the Licking County League (Licking Heights, Licking Valley) have shown interest in Tri-Valley the last few years. Both those leagues have teams looking to go to other leagues.

Also, Nov. 2, 2015.

One of the ways Buttermore has progressed the team is by scheduling challenging non-league games. Here are the non-MVL and playoff games since 2006:

2006 MVL 6-2
Week 10:Columbus St. Charles - TV won 14-9
Week 11 R11 D3 Dover - TV lost 49-14

2007 MVL 8-0
Week 10: Lake - TV lost 42-0
Week 11 R7 D2 Logan - TV won 31-26
Week 12 R7 D2 Louisville - TV lost 22-13
(Louisville beat Lake week 11 34-21 and finished State Runner Up)

2008 MVL 6-2
Week 10 Lake - TV lost 48-26
Did not make playoffs.

2009 MVL 8-0
Week 4 Dover - TV lost 28-0
Week 11 R7 D2 Olentangy Orange - TV lost 28-21

2010 MVL 7-1
Week 1 Upper Arlington - TV lost 24-17
Week 4 Dover - TV won 26-21
Week 11 R7 D2 New Albany - TV won 30-27 OT
Week 12 R7 D2 Lake - TV lost 42-28

2011 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Upper Arlington - TV won 29-27
Week 4 Dover - TV lost 14-10
Week 11 R7 D2 Tecumseh - TV won 48-30
Week 12 R7 D2 New Albany - TV won 24-7
Week 13 R7 D2 Marion Franklin - TV lost 48-42 in OT

2012 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Licking Valley - TV won 29-14
Week 4 Dover - TV won 28-21
Week 11 R7 D2 Tecumseh - TV won 49-27
Week 12 R7 D2 New Albany - TV lost 42-35

2013 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Licking Valley - TV lost 17-14
Week 4 Zanesville - TV lost 52-7 (Zanesville lost in state final 4)
Week 11 R9 D3 New Philadelphia - TV won 47-21
Week 12 R9 D3 Athens- TV lost 55-52 in OT

2014 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Licking Valley - TV won 42-6
Week 4 Zanesville - TV won 35-0
Week 11 R9 D3 New Philadelphia - TV won 21-14
Week 12 R9 D3 Athens- TV lost 41-20

2015 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Licking Valley - TV won 37-3
Week 4 Zanesville - TV lost 10-7
Week 11 R2 D5 Boardman - TV represents........win or lose

So in non-league games where TV played schools with a history of solid football teams they are 8-8 since 2006. TV's playoff record since 2006 (same as all time), they are 7-8.

Tri-Valley has had 4 QBs in a row that would be considered the once in a generation-type QBs. From 2005-07 Cam West was a good passer and a quick shifty runner. He is back at TV as the QB coach. He started as a DB at Mt. Union 2 or 3 years. 2009-10 was Clay Cameron. He was a starting WR his FR-SO years. He was a solid passer, ran like an RB and hit you like at LB when he ran the ball. Man among boys. Was a receiver at Kent or Akron until he had a shoulder injury his FR year that ended his football career. 2010-2013 was Nate Strock (nephew of Don Strock QB for Miami Dolphins). He is currently the back up QB at Kent. His passes were like a hand off 20-30 yards away. 2013-14 was Brock Fargus who is now at Tiffin. Another accurate passer with a pretty strong arm and both Fargus and Strock ran the ball well.

TV has a couple of solid QBs this year. Not the passers of the last 9 years, but can still get the job done in the passing game. Just a few more incompletions than fans are used to.

TV's biggest improvement under Buttermore has been the strength program the players go through in the off season. Our linemen especially have been strong and the number of players who can play the line has made it so the linemen can be two platooned offense and defense or rotated (depending on the year). Adam Bice (TV 2004-07) started at center for Akron his junior and senior year. Ryan Spiker (2005-08) went to West Virginia on scholarship. Decided college was not for him. One current lineman getting some D1 looks.

2015 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Licking Valley - TV won 37-3
Week 4 Zanesville - TV lost 10-7
Week 11 R2 D2 Boardman. TV won 27-2
Week 12 Lost to Perry. I'm thinking it was 52-7. Perry's line play was amazing.

2016
Week 1 Licking Valley TV won easily.
Week 4 Zanesville. TV won easily.
Week 8 Sheridan. Beat TV to break a 47 league game winning streak. Sheridan historically was the Big Dog in the MVL and TV has beat them convincingly several years in a row.

At 9-1 Tri-Valley just barely missed the playoffs as a D2 team. Happy to be back in D3 for 2017.

I can't tell you who will win next Thursday, but I am fairly confident Tri-Valley will win 8 or 9 games AFTER week 1. St. V. St. M or Sheridan will be the toughest opponent in the regular season.

This year Tri-Valley returns 19 of 22 starters from last year. Skill positions are very experienced with 2 or 3 speedsters. The returning QB broke his leg in the week 10 game last year. Likely the fastest kid on the team. TV has a couple players who are better passers so you might see QB by committee.

Tri-Valley's strengths: Coaching. Defense. Kicker.

Tri-Valley's question areas: Line play. Especially offensive line.

Look for TV to be 50/50 run/pass. Coaches have been very successful over the years running in a passing situation and passing in a running situation.

Young St. Vincent-St. Mary leans on veteran line, secondary: 2017 football camp visit

Luke Lindsay earned the starting quarterback job as a freshman.

Running back Terrance Keyes Jr. and receiver Jalen Ross did the same at their positions. Collectively, St. Vincent-St. Mary possessed a staggering number of freshmen last year for a playoff team.

After watching the scrimmage last night I would say this is a 5-5 team. Poor line play is going to kill them again this year. It doesn't matter how talented your skills are if the line isn't doing their job. They insist on lining up in I formation and trying to pound the ball and it's simply not working. Keyes had a few nice runs that got called back on holding calls. I would say we had 5 or 6 total holding calls. When they went spread with 4 WRs they threw the ball all over the place and moved right down the field.

But the Cleveland.com article talks about SVSM relying on their veteran line. Mixed reports between that and what you're saying.

FYI The schedule posted at the end has a couple errors. TV has 5 home and 5 away games. They are AT Morgan and AT New Lex.

After hearing STVM's line struggled Thursday, I'd attribute that to Midview. Middies got a late bump in our preseason Top 25 after watching them practice and hearing of this.

Wasn't meaning to question your observation. It was just different than what another source had reported.

Good luck to the Irish this year - except in 1 game, of course. They do play a tough schedule because of not playing in a conference.

Tri-Valley is a senior-laden team that plays solid assignment football. Tri-Valley has a few athletes, but not to the degree that STVM does. I think TV will make it a game most of the way, but STVM pulls away late. 35-24

Stv is a very young team with only 11 seniors on the roster. We will start sophomores at QB, RB and one at Wr. They are young but played a lot last year and are very talented. On defense we are replacing all 3 LB's and both corners along with 2 dlinemen who are at Akron now. Stv has a lot of speed at the skill positions but offensive line play wasnt solid last year and so far this year.

If we can score 35 I like our chances but offense hasn't been easy. The defense isn't as stout as prior years so this game is a toss up in my opinion. If the line can get the Qb some time and the RB just a little room they will score some points.

The past couple of years it seems like it is better to play the Irish early in the season than late. With the youth on the team this year, I would expect that trend to continue. If the O-line gels early, it will be a great season. If not, then 6-4 comes in to play. The Irish realize TV is a tough team and they will have to play well to win. Looking at the schedule, this may not be a "must win", but it's pretty darn close! I expect the Irish to be ready!

Tri-Valley is pretty much a lock to be at worst 8-2 this year. The Irish and Sheridan are the only teams that realistically could beat them. Most of the other 8 games will be second half running clocks. Any team that beats TV will get a load of Harbin points over the season.

So about how many Irish fans are likely to make the 1 hr 40 minute trip to Dresden on a Thursday night?

The Irish goes as far as the Offensive Line takes them. The skill set is young but the talent is legit. This team is built for speed on the permieter and in the flats with the occasional deep ball to stretch out the secondary. 3 yards & cloud of dust doesn't work through the A & B Gap with no push or sustained second level blocking. Defensively the young Irish won't be as big but remain aggressive and quick to the ball supported by an outstanding defensive coaching staff. The Team has the talent to contend for the D3 region 9 title with the deciding factor being in the trenches.

I would say not very many. On a school night close to a 100 miles away you're going to get parents and die hard fans only.

It seems that SVSM's offensive line play has been pretty average the last 2 or 3 years.

SVSM has good young skill players, and a solid QB. I watched the Benny scrimmage. A deep playoff run will depend on the development of the offensive and defensive line play.

What's the weather to be like tomorrow evening? I know given the distance from Akron, it won't be the same. Gonna need a jacket? Where's a good place to eat before the game?
