Ryan Shazier

Looks like he may have avoided the worst outcome.

Good news if true. Maybe he can come back for the playoffs.

BobcatBomber is an unknown quantity at this point
Maybe this will encourage him to learn a proper tackling technique. It's an epidemic these days.

Agree on the technique but its not unique to Shazier. About 90% of NFL players don't seem to know how to tackle. They aren't permitted to tackle in practice which doesn't help.

correct. they work on their technique vs tackling dummies and sleds but that certainly isn't the same as a MOVING TARGET with a football.

Seems like he's regained some feeling in his lower body. Airlifted to Pittsburgh today.

This is definitely a prime example of why it's important to perfect proper form. It's amazing stuff like this doesn't happen more often.

So, some not-good news today. Shazier did not suffer a contusion and had surgery yesterday:

Quote:
Steelers’ statement suggests Ryan Shazier suffered very serious injury

Today the Steelers announced thatShazier did have surgery, and there was nothing in the Steelers’ more recent statement about Shazier continuing to improve.

Dr. Anthony Alessi, who consults with the NFL Players Association, told Michele Steele‏ of ESPN that although he hasn’t examined Shazier, he does believe that Shazier’s spinal stabilization surgery is a procedure that indicates a very serious injury.

“It’s not good,” Alessi said. “We’re not going to see him this season. He may not play football again.”

Although reports on Monday night indicated that Shazier suffered a spinal contusion, Alessi said the surgery means that’s not the case.

“This is a much more severe situation on our hands than we thought,” Alessi said...

As a Bengal fan I do not like the Steelers at all, but I pray that this young may be in our city again to play football. More importantly though I hope he makes a recovery that will allow him to walk and have a normal life. I'm sure the Steeler's ownership will do everything possible to take care of him and his family, whether he plays football again or not.

Kind of thought it looked eerily similar to the David Pollack injury. Hope he recovers as well as Pollack did.

Yes, proper form is very important but this can never be eliminated. Right now its extremely rare to happen and it sucks each time but the only way to prevent it is.....to not play football

I don't know the statistics on severe back injuries in the past or if they even exist, but Shazier was a time bomb with the way he tackles and other players are too. It would be disastrous for the game if this becomes more common. Proper tackling must be demanded at all levels.

Another Dr.'s opinion on Shazier:

Quote:
Surgery not necessarily a setback for Ryan Shazier

...Emergency surgery was not needed, as the cord was not being actively compromised. But Wednesday night’s surgery was almost certainly to prevent future damage to the spinal cord.

It was likely a fusion surgery with rods, screws and/or metal cage with bone graft to fuse the unstable spine segment.

Although football is not at the forefront of anyone's thoughts now, this surgery itself does not rule Shazier out from football in the future. But without a doubt he is done for the season. Fusion takes 4-6 months for recovery.

The key is still the spinal cord and nerves. Are they working or not? Is there feeling and movement? Has there been early progress? Progress is key...

Shazier is obviously done for the season. Hopefully not for good. Sunday v Ravens should be a good test if the Steelers have a plan to fill the void, Shaziers loss is a big blow. Backup Tyler M. will likely not play (shoulder) so they have moved Moats an OLB to the middle and signed Sean Spence who was on the team but released. If the Ravens are able to exploit the middle it will be telling.

He is never playing again. Not with that injury and the position he plays

Lets all relax on making predictions on if he will or won't play again. One step at a time. I dont care if he never plays again as long as he can walk and live a normal life. Playing again would be icing on the cake

Yeah, it’s extremely unlikely he plays football again.
