Garfield Heights D-3 District Rankings (Regular Season #1)

I love doing these rankings, but as it has been pointed out before, they are just for fun. To any wrestlers who read these and feel that they are ranked too low, you may be right.
I am bound to be wrong on many of the rankings, but fortunately they have absolutely no impact on how anyone will finish at any tournament this season or any other year.

I started moving wrestlers up and down from their previous year’s weights. The new weights are partially based off of where they’ve been wrestling in the off season, though a lot of it is pure guesswork at this time.
Please let me know if anyone has inside information about new weights, schools, or wrestlers that they think should be added.

I’ve tried shifting the wrestlers around from schools that changed divisions. Please let me know if any are wrong, or if I’m forgetting any schools/wrestlers.

* = unsure about participation

-The schools of the incoming freshmen are based off of the previous Yappi thread. Please let me know if any are wrong or have changed.

106-
1. Boot Kuhlins- Tuslaw (8th state)
2. Brett Szuhay- Crestwood
3. Brandt Virden- Columbiana
4. Jacob Castillo- Clearview
5. Dylan Martin- (W.S.) Northwestern
6. Deagan Foster- Waterloo
7. Michael Prikryl- Rootstown
8. Dawson Manley- Mogadore

Szuhay split two bouts with middle school state placer Ethan Fletcher at Solon.

I became aware of Castillo thanks to Boro Fan who had him listed on his Lorain Tournament preview.

A number of these other wrestlers are incoming freshmen who could make an impact at this weight or at 113. Martin beat Storm Stanley in the conference finals when they were both 7th graders.
I believe that Prikryl and Manley were 2nd and 3rd respectively at the PTC middle school tournament last year.

113-
1. Dominic Savoca- Crestwood
2. Jacob Edelman- Pymatuning Valley (SQ)
3. Kyle Keenan- South Range (SQ)
4. Zach Lahood- Black River (6th district)
5. Caleb Edwards- Rootstown
6. Hunter Frederick- Mapleton (5th district)
7. Seth Unkefer- Waynedale
8. Joe Viront- Tuslaw

Savoca placed 4th at Solon where he pinned Jake Hamulak in the quarterfinals.

120-
1. Jake White- Manchester (SQ)
2. Robert Pinkie- Lutheran West (SQ)
3. Brandon Meade- Cuyahoga Hts. (5th district)
4. J.P. Hlifka- Hawken (SQ)
5. Storm Stanley- Waynedale
6. Blake Rising- Mapleton
7. Josh Ondash- Crestwood
8. William Campbell- Pymatuning Valley

White and Larue are bumped up a weight from the last set of rankings. The new weights won’t affect their status as district title favorites heading into the season.

126-
1. Zach Larue- Manchester (6th, 6th state)
2. Steven Ferguson- Elyria Cath. (5th district, 5th district 2016)
3. Nick Cianciola- Canton C.C. (SQ)
4. Derek Houser- (Columbiana) Crestview
5. Dylan Ward- Smithville (6th district)
6. Colin Shaffstall- Wellington
7. Daniel Forbes- Loudonville
8. Keshaun Clark- Rittman

132-
1. Niko Chilson- Rootstown (5th state)
2. Seth Majewski- Brooklyn (SQ)
3. Connor Brennan- Tuslaw (SQ)
4. Luke Hopkins- Cuyahoga Hts. (SQ 2016)
5. Clayton Baglia- Chippewa
6. Ryan Staton- Jackson-Milton
7. Harley Young- Loudonville
8. Michael Briggs- Triway

Majewski was tournament champ at Avon Lake where he pinned Tanner Raupach in the finals.

138-
1. Nick Burgard- (Ashtabula) St. John (SQ)
2. Brier Marthey- Tuslaw (SQ)
3. Andrew Zairns- Brooklyn (SQ)
4. Trent Duvall- Rootstown (6th district)
5. Parker Watson– Lutheran W. (5th district)
6. Cael Rowland- (W.S.) Northwestern (6th district)
7. Evan Hostetler- Waynedale
8. Noah Campbell- Pymatuning Valley (6th district)

Watson majored Kahlil Brown 16-5 in the finals at Lorain to claim the tournament title.

I don’t believe that I saw Duvall listed among Rootstown’s alpha weights. He would likely be either here or at 126 with Chilson at 132.

145-
1. Logan Kissell- Garfield (3rd, 6th, 7th state)
2. Mason Wright- Wellington
3. Brennan Shirley- Tuslaw (5th district 2016)
4. Tyler Jenkins- Rootstown
5. Andrew Hardenbrook- (Columbiana) Crestview
6. Jack Brocco- Independence
7. Wyatt Zimmerman- Orrville
8. Brandon Feist- (W. S.) Northwestern (6th district 2015)

Kissell was tournament champ at Solon where he majored state qualifier Garrett Anderson 8-0 in the finals.

Wright claimed a tournament title at Avon Lake where he beat Xavier Rivers 5-2 in the finals.

Brocco wrestled at Brecksville last year. He’s another transfer that I become aware of through Boro. He’ll likely get to dictate his weight this year for Independence after finding a spot in a crowded Brecksville line-up last season.

152-
1. Gavin Stika- Norwayne (3rd state, 8th state 2015)
2. Chris Anderson- Rootstown (2nd middle school state)
3. Trenton Mathew- Smithville (5th district)
4. Ryan Finney- Garfield
5. Beau Lefever- Mapleton
6. Mike Weston- Newbury
7. Jimmy McClellan- Berkshire
8. Nathan Shaw- Waynedale

I was told that state qualifier Kyle Ryder would not be wrestling this year due to a football injury, but he’s listed among the team’s alpha weights. So…we’ll see.

Finney placed 3rd at Solon where he beat middle school state placer Aidan Corrigan.

160-
1. David Cumberledge- (Ashtabula) St. John (5th district)
2. Alex Lampert- Newbury (5th district)
3. Stephen Skeens- Tuslaw
4. Kaden Kidd- Norwayne (4th middle school state)
5. Derek Duvall- (W.S.) Northwestern (5th district 2016)
6. Tommy Carson- Crestwood
7. Mouad Elouaddi- Liberty
8. Chad Brown- Pymatuning Valley

170-
1. Jacob Lagoa- (Ashtabula) St. John (1st state)
2. Riley Smucker- Smithville (4th, 5th state)*
3. Nick Mroczynski- Independence
4. Sevi Garza- Rittman (2nd middle school state)
5. Dalton Abfall- Mapleton
6. Cameron VanBrunt- Orrville
7. Gavin Davis- Loudonville
8. Zion Matlock- Liberty

I received a message that Smucker had also sustained a football injury, though admittedly I don’t know the severity of the injury or its impact on his wrestling status.

182-
1. Logan Stanley- Waynedale (3rd state)
2. Chris Langguth- Rootstown (6th state)
3. Christian Blank- (Ashtabula) St. John (SQ)
4. Nathan Whitehead- Columbiana*
5. Nick Scarl- Jackson-Milton
6. Bryce Randall- Brookfield
7. Cole Hurd- Waterloo
8. Dakota Stratton- (Columbiana) Crestview

Whitehead is not listed among Columbiana’s alpha weights, so he may not be wrestling. Teammate Frank Rupert could also be a threat at this weight.

195-
1. Nick Shephard- Fairless (SQ)
2. Jacob Campbell- Black River (SQ)
3. Landon Talbert- (Columbiana) Crestview
4. Ty Straits- Waynedale
5. Jake Loar- Tuslaw (6th district)
6. Dedric Isaac- Rittman (SQ 2016)
7. Michael Miller- Mogadore
8. Anthony Czap- South Range (5th district)

I was a bit surprised to see Talbert and Isaac with alpha weights of 195 after wrestling 220 last year. However, it may be the smart move given how loaded 220 will be at this district.

220-
1. Gaige Willis- Pymatuning Valley (1st, 2nd, 8th state)
2. Paul Skye- Mogadore (8th, 6th state)
3. Ryan Boyle- Rootstown (4th state)
4. Crawford Hamrick- Tuslaw (5th district)
5. Ben Farrar- Waynedale (6th district, 6th district 2016)
6. C.J. Novotny- Crestwood
7. Sam Auble- Orrville
8. Daniel Morgan- (Columbiana) Crestview

I bumped Morgan up here with teammate Talbert listed at 195 for his alpha. It’s possible that Morgan wrestles 182 again and teammate Stratton goes 170 again.

285-
1. Pat Sheridan- V.A.-St.J. (SQ)
2. Brayden Phillips- Tuslaw (8th state)
3. Derrick Elrod- (Ashtablua) St. John (6th district)
4. Joe Warren- Smithville (5th district)
5. J.D. McCardle- Clearview
6. Josh Stasek- Independence
7. Caleb Bean- Pymatuning Valley
8. William Lindsey- Hawken

Teams:
1. Tuslaw
2. Rootstown
3. (Ashtabula) St. John
4. Waynedale
5. Pymatuning Valley
6. Crestwood
7. Smithville
8. (Columbiana) Crestview

Tuslaw remains the favorite even if Ryder is done for the year with an injury. Their lead would shrink with his absence, but they’ll still start the year at #1.

St. John looks like it has the potential for 4 district champs this year. I’m not sure if they have any incoming freshmen who could help push them into the top 2 at the district tournament, but I did notice that they had a wrestler named “Van Dam” in their alpha weights. I assume that is a joke name that someone threw on the list, but I’m hoping that it’s a real person.

A special thanks to Boro Fan for all the insight into the weights of the wrestlers, Baum’s Page and Jake’s Wrestling for all of the results that they provide, and to any of the other wrestling nerds that actually read these things.

106- 1. Boot Kuhlins-Tuslaw. Is he on your "Best wrestling names 2017" list?
Sounds like a gunslinger from an old western movie.

It was between him and Nick Sabin at 106, and you can't go wrong either way.

Dawson Manley will be at 113 or 120, not 106.

Most probable lineup for Mogadore lightweights this year will be

106 Logan Hummel
113 Jonathan Karasek
120 Dawson Manley

Manley and Karasek are nearly same size so could come down who is lighter and who wins wrestle off for 113/120.

All 3 can be found on the results for last year’s PTC JH wrestling tournament.

Hummel took 6th at 92
Manley took 3rd at 92
Karasek took 2nd at 98

All 3 were part of last year’s first ever league championship for Mogadore wrestling at either level (HS or MS).

Karasek placed as a 7th grader the year before as well.

Hearing this from both their fathers. Smucker is expected back to compete in the first round of the state duals 1/24. Ryder would like to wrestle at least once before sectionals if possible. That would be their league tournament at CVCA 2/17.
