Nwoal 17-18

This year should be another good year with good competition. The top teams this year do not seem to change. Archbold will be returning their whole starting lineup and Wauseon will be returning 3 starters, but will return they're whole bench. Both teams are coming from their trips to state. And most likely will make it back down for the second time in a row. Wauseon has the heigth -- & archbold has the speed. Should be a very good matchup.

I'm curious to see if other teams in the league will challenge these two juggernauts. If I had to guess my predictions would go;

Bryan
Swanton
Evergreen
Liberty Center
Patrick Henry
Delta

I am only somewhat familiar with Swanton and Evergreen. If I am not mistaken Swanton lost most of their top players and Evergreen was fresh. and soph. dominated last year. I would look for Evergreen to push Bryan for 3rd. Their speed "could" (not saying they will) match up with Archbold, but don't think they have the size to bite Wauseon.

I think Ottawa Glandorf and Upper Sandusky are now D3. The Bowling Green Regional will be a meat grinder. I think OG only graduated 1 Sr. Not sure about Upper, but they were ranked #2 in D2 in the final poll last year.

Fort Recovery and Huron also are now D3 and had very solid teams last year.

OG did drop to D3 and US did too. US lost a bunch from last season in different ways, graduation, move outs, quits. OG returns a bunch but will Kaufman be ready to play or is he focusing on rehab for college football? Huron should also be very good with what they return.

It is terrible to see all these injuries. There are some very good teams in the region who have very good players trying to come back from injury.

Genoa - Plantz
Eastwood - Boos
Ottawa Glandorf - Kaufman

Sorry I high jacked the NWOAL thread.

Sounds like D3 will be a barn burner this year. Should be fun and interesting to watch !

Wauseon will start the season off with high quality teams. They will scrimmage Toledo St. Johnís & Hilliard Bradley.

Can someone put updates on how each league team does in their scrimmages?

Plantz is back for Genoa.....surprised to see Wauseon put such a beatdown on them on Tuesday. Genoa scrimmaged OG and held their own, though OG's press did give them some trouble and Kaufman didn't play for OG. Kaufman is cleared to start playing on Monday, but is probably not gonna see any games for awhile...not sure if he'll be back by Archbold on the 23rd. Looks like the NW District is down to 3 districts this year instead of 4....meaning the 4th team will be coming from the Central district (they added a 2nd district this year). Gotta think Harvest Prep or Worthington Christian are likely choices.

Some scores I would not have expected for Evergreen;

North Central W 60 - 51
Swanton L 39 - 40
Otsego L 51 - 56

Do they have an injury or are they missing guys from last year?

Swanton is a head scratcher too;

Lake W 47 - 37
Evergreen W 40 - 39
Delta L 29 - 46

Not sure how they beat Lake and Evergreen, but then lose to Delta.

Stritch plays at Evergreen Thursday. Should be a good one.

They went to OT early last year in a very entertaining game. Several clutch shots being made in crunch time by both teams.

These next 2 1/2 weeks will be the toughest part of Stritch's schedule.

I don't think Loeffler played in the first game for Evergreen, but he was the leading scorer against Swanton.
Swanton is just inexperienced, so they will probably be up and down this season, especially early on.

1. Evergreen is still very young and to be honest, even though they have height, they haven't physically matured yet.

2. Delta beating Swanton not a huge surprise...Swanton/Evergreen is a huge rivalry and Delta caught a young Swanton team coming off a Rivalry win the night before.

3. NWOAL is a 2-team race with Archbold and Wauseon

4. Bryan and PH will battle for 3rd and 4th, LC will be next then Evergreen Swanton and Delta.

Good team win for Stritch. Evergreen is a tough matchup for Stritch every year.

Stritch had to "gut" it out with a couple kids fighting the flu and their 20 ppg scorer/leader fouling out with 4 points.

What we know to this point in season...

Wauseon - best starting 5 in the league but still waiting to see if the bench can produce.

Archbold - deep team with great shooters but ??? in the Post play

LC - Tigers have played a brutal schedule so far, not sure how they match up yet

PH - has shown glimpses of looking good but a couple of ??? losses

Bryan - I still think they can make some noise in the League but they have struggled

Evergreen - talented but very young...still learning to play together

Delta - Panthers have shown glimpses of being better then last year

Swanton - young team and still not sure what we will get from them

I still can't believe Evergreen only has 1 win. I have seen them twice the last two years and they looked very solid at both ends of the floor. They will be that team in the tournament that no one wants to see early.

Big regional/state level game tonight with Archbold vs Ottawa Glandorf. Love seeing these tough regular season games.

Have not seen Ottawa Glandorf play but understand they have multiple big strong athletic kids. Archbold will try to control tempo and make OG work hard on both side of the court.

It should be a good tight game decided in the 4th quarter.

Having seen pretty much everyone in the NWO D2 and D3 districts, I agree that Wauseon and Archbold should roll through the district. They both are so consistent with what they do. With the other top teams you just don't know what you are going to get game to game.

Blade poll has Wauseon #1 in D2, no other D2 team in the area has a winning record. Wauseon is obviously the class of the district and probably the region.

Archbold is #3 in D3. With competitive losses to Wauseon and Ottawa Glandorf. I think they should be #1 in the poll. The seeding for the tournament will be interesting.

I look for Archbold to get thru the District....don't think Stritch has enough for them...but definitely think that will be the District final matchup

Wauseon could be challenged...road will be a little tougher than last year with the changes in D2 and them moving to the ONU district. Elida (8-0) and Liima Shawnee (7-2) are both in that District along with the rest of the WBL teams other than OG....seeding vote could be interesting depending on how the rest of the season plays out.

I have seen Stritch on TV 3 or 4 times. They are a strange team.

While they have played well, they look like one of those teams whose parts are better than their team as a whole. If they can consistently play together and use all their weapons it will be tough for anyone to match up with their size and athletes. They seem to let the other team dictate how they play instead of playing to their strength and making the other team adjust to them.

The announcer on one of their games mentioned that 10 of the guys on their roster can dunk, which means nothing as far as results on the court, but if that is true I doubt there is another team in the area including D1 schools with that much depth of size/athletes.

I think Archbold will get through district, but there is a chance that Stritch could upset Archbold. I think it will be Archbold vs O-G in the regional semifinal

Do you mean the Central Catholic district? Stacked? C'mon....anyone other than Archbold or Stritch winning it would have to be considered a fairly huge upset. Winning the District will be the easy part....it only gets tougher from there. Barring a big upset, the winner of the Central Catholic district is likely going to get a semi-final matchup with OG...and depending on who comes to the BGSU from the Columbus District, the final could be Harvest Prep, who has to be one of the favorites to win it all in D3. If Harvest Prep doesn't come to the BG regional, they are likely waiting in the state semi's for whoever does make it out of BG.

As for NW Ohio D3....overall, it's the weakest it's been in a long time. LCC is at .500, though all their losses have been to good teams and Liberty Benton is awful. The number of teams that realistically have a chance to come out of the BG regional from NW Ohio is probably not more than 4 or 5

My fault, I thought OG was in the central district this year. Thats where I was coming from, but yeah like you said, it should be a walkthrough district. But after that, itís anyones game. OG and Archbold are the two teams that have the capability to make appearance. Should be a good match up if both teams have their full lineup and are healthy!

Stritch is 9-1, lost to a D1 school with good length, a lot of muscle and above average defense, in which Stritch led for 85% of the game and was tied with 4:00 min to go in the 4th quarter. My point in saying that is that one loss doesn't make them "strange", assuming you mean inconsistent.

Most games they share the ball pretty well and have 8 or 9 guys score anywhere from 5 to 20 points. When teams slow them down there is a lot more one on one that goes on, but it often results in foul shots or a little too often charges. Once they start pulling up from 6-8 feet or making a cleaner pass to the corner watch out

I have seen one guy with multiple dunks in games and would say they have 4 "game dunkers" who would throw it down with a decent lead. There are 9 kids I have watched dunk pretty easy. Not sure about the transfer, but he would be the only other player who would make ten. Agree dunking means nothing to the outcome of a game though. It does help on the defensive end of the floor to have some length and athletes. Just confirming the comment above.

Archbold has the talent and plays a style that will be a major challenge for Stritch, who may be a year away with everyone they have coming back in combination with the losses that the other top teams will have to their rosters.

http://davey1.com/Schedules/LeagueStandings.pdf

Northwest Ohio Athletic League
Wauseon 10 - 0 0 - 0
Archbold 7 - 2 0 - 0
Swanton 4 - 5 0 - 0
Bryan 3 - 5 0 - 0
Evergreen 3 - 5 0 - 0
Patrick Henry 3 - 6 0 - 0
Liberty Center 3 - 6 0 - 0
Delta 2 - 7 0 - 0

It is strange that the league only plays 1 time through. Wauseon @ Archbold will determine league title.
