2016 College recruits early departure

I have read numerous articles pertaining to the attrition rate of college athletes at all levels of college athletics recently. Seems that stats show that a minimum of 33% of college athletes fail to make it to their senior year of competitive play. Now, after seeing first hand how some 2016 high school grads, and current college freshman, are contemplating leaving, or already have quit college baseball after fall ball, it brings into perspective how accurate these attrition rates truly are. I assume there are various reasons, such as kids becoming homesick, realizing that their opportunity to play college baseball might not look as rosey now that they are on campus, as they were led to believe via their travel coaches hype, or simply not seeing an opportunity to play at the college level they chose to compete. Just reinforces the point so often made here how important it is for any prospective athlete to find the correct fit prior to falling into the recruiting hype put forth by those who profess to have the best interest of their travel players as a priority.

Many players depart early due to grades. Others realize they will not get play time and give up. In many programs the coach has a quota of players he must recruit. Usually about twice what he plans to have on the team in the Spring. While it is necessary to over recruit to a point (about 15%) to allow for those who will be academically ineligible or just don't show up day one. Over recruiting as a revenue source for the program happens. If a player is in a situation like this it is not the end of the world, many JUCO and smaller 4 year schools are looking for transfers this time of year.
