Update/Edit: Cleveland.com says a 7pm start time for both scrimmages. Who knows?? My hunch is the time listed by the News-Herald is when the JV part of the scrimmage starts and the varsity will start approximately at 7.
Mentor Football calendar shows 6PM V/JV Scrimmage vs Jackson on 8/10, 11am Freshman Scrimmage vs Jackson on 8/11 and 7PM Scrimmage vs Chardon on 8/17.

How would you rank Mentor's schedule from 1-10 in terms of difficulty? The order of the top three was tough, but here is my crack at it: http://mentorfootball.blogspot.com/2...-schedule.html

Before looking at yours

Ignatius
Eds
Euclid
Solon
Strongsville
Glenville
Brunswick
Medina
Elyria
Shaker hts

I gave iggy the edge cuz it's the away game of the two

And now looking at it I see the only difference is flip flopping medina and Brunswick at 7/8

I may push Medina and Brunswick past Glenville. Medina will be improved and Brunswick (I didn't realize the extent) is senior laden.

I personally would push Strongsville above Solon for no. 4, but it's picking hairs.

Outside of Elyria and Shaker, both probably better than their records will indicate but no real threat, this is a schedule that will have you guys prepared for when the eventual rematches happen in the playoffs, since you are pretty much facing 7 of the top dozen or so R1 teams (and easily, IMO, the top three not named Mentor in Ed's, Iggy and Euclid.

Last yearís Brunswick team looked like a JV squad. Even when Mentor brought their backups in, they scored pretty easily. If the many juniors werenít even good enough to start over the seniors on the team I saw, that doesnít bode well. Glenville, even in a down season by their standard, was still much better than Brunswick.

In fairness the JV kids for both teams played the entire second half of that game. Mentors backups were not playing against Brunswicks starters.

Mentor scrimmaged Jackson at home tonight. The first part of the scrimmage saw both teams getting ten offensive plays. Jackson was on offense first. Jackson advanced roughly 10-12 total yards on the ten plays. Mentor advanced about 80, which included a drive capped off by sophomore QB Ian Kipp running into the end zone.

During the more game-like conditions, the two teams played one real time quarter. Jackson had five possessions and didn’t get a first down. Mentor had four. The first was a 70-yard touchdown run on the first play by junior Brian Trobel. The second possession was a long drive that ended with junior back Varney Spansel running it in from around the 10. The third and fourth offensive possessions didn’t go that well. Kipp showed his inexperience. And why wouldn’t he, the kid is just a sophomore. Overall, Mentor looked like the much better team. Not a surprise. Good to see football again though, even in a scrimmage.

How did he look throwing the ball? It sounds like the running game will be counted on early until he gets more reps into the season.

As the News-Herald alluded, the offense didn't really open up yesterday. Kipp never threw down field. Lots of short passes. Some receivers were out of position due to an injury, which probably threw some things out of whack. Jackson was often dropping back seven guys into coverage, making the passing lanes shrink considerably. Because they didn't blitz linebackers, Kipp had all day to pass - but four receivers among seven defenders didn't leave for a lot of openings. When Kipp sees that kind of defense again, I hope in the regular season he will be more aggressive at just taking off and picking up first downs with his legs.

For a sophomore starting at the first scrimmage, Kipp did well. Lots of time and opportunity to grow this year and the following two seasons. The running game is ahead of the passing game right now, and that is fine. Takes a lot of pressure off Kipp.

Looks like varsity starts at 6pm. They will likely play two quarters of football.

Mentor beats Chardon 24-7 after a half of football. The offense opened up a little compared to last week with giving Kipp some opportunities to throw down the field. Trobel has some nice runs again. Gallo and Floriea made some big plays at receiver. It was hardly a perfect showing against a school half the size of Mentor. But hopefully the coaches got what they wanted.

Chardon looked pretty good on both sides of the ball. They definitely looked better than Jackson a week ago. If tonight was any indication, Chardon should have a good team.

Great article that shows how all the area teams and many other teams (including from Columbus) avoid Mentor in football scheduling

Playing Eds and ignatius back to back weeks as a public is rough but Mentor really has no choice

That was a good article...except for the NH referring to the Eagles as ďSt EdĒ...

Mentor should thank their lucky stars that Glenville agrees to be on the schedule. This scheduling business will get even worse if they donít. Hopefully that one can stick around for at least a couple more years. I agree that Mentor is much better off playing St Eds than going to Cincinnati and playing the GCL. Mentor might be ďstuckĒ with the Eagles for a little while. The success of both teams have trouble filling out a schedule.

Too bad it didnít work out with Avon. Their silly 9-team league schedule allows no flexibility in non conference scheduling. Avon has been one of the best DII teams in NEO the past ten years. Would have been a fun series to watch. Maybe somewhere down the road. But I donít blame Avon for treading carefully. If they donít foresee a great team by their standard (as they did this season), why schedule a D1 powerhouse?

Those are the competitive balance adjusted numbers. Mentor ranks 10th in the reported OHSAA EMIS figures. https://ohsaa.org/Sports-Tournaments...ol-Assignments

Is the OHSAA.org site not a good "source"? I used "football enrollment #s" in my original comment above......I'll make sure to say "competitive adjustment balanced" or whatever next time I post.

Been like this for a little while now. Brunswick is close to passing them up now even.

Mentor has zero for the CB increase number too. One of the few power schools who can make that claim

As cardz said in the other thread , get there early. Parking is going to suck with city fest going on next door

Will be interested to see how the young team plays tonight. A lot of growth opportunities throughout the season no matter what , but hopefully they do enough tonight to pull out a hard fought win

Great win for Mentor over St Eds. A lot to work on but also a lot of potential. Beating Eds by any score puts a smile on my face !

The passing game is young. Sophomore qb and 4 of the 5 WRs barely played last year. It can grow

The rbs are great even though they are new starters.

The oline is phenomenal. Enjoy this. Probably won't get two tackles like this together again in our lives. The privates get them all the time but hard to get 2 in the same school district like this. Huge holes all game long

The defense had a pretty good first half. Then the fourth quarter showed the true Funk coached defense I expect every year

I don't know how Funk is still D.C. He must have pictures of triv. I'll say that every year because nothing ever changes

The kids are poorly coached and out of position all the time. Our best player is a osu de recruit and the genius Funk decides to play a 3 man line opening him up to be double teamed at least and sometimes triple teamed all the time

And you only play 3-4 with stud lbs. our lbs aren't bad but they are so poorly coached that they are out of position all the time and huge gaps are on the field

Funk should coach the most elementary 4-3 that he can. Cuz the guy doesn't know what he's doing so why not play a safer scheme and maximize the talent of your best player

It's getting tiresome saying the same things every year on defense

But again glad they won yesterday
