Having Kipp connecting with Floreia on some big pass plays gives opponents something to think about. With a big target like Mason Trubisky getting healthy for intermediate throws will make the offense that much better.

Watching the Kipp to Floriea connection reminds me of how much a young sophomore QB (like Tatarunas in 2015) can benefit from having a receiver with breakaway speed. Tatarunas had a senior, Jason Blizzard, that was the huge difference maker in 2015. That was a big reason why Tatarunas had such huge numbers as a sophomore. Blizzard had 1,360 receiving yards to go along with 12 TD's. That is close to half of the overall yards (2,963) and exactly half of the TD's Tatarunas (24) threw for the season.

The other receivers are steady. Trubisky has size, athleticism, and good hands. If he can stay healthy, he will help move the chains. Gallo has been moved around between the slot and outside with some success. I think he will have a nice season. Justin Luke and Nolan Vernon are also new starters, but some potential is there too. Floriea will be the difference maker. The good news for Mentor is this Kipp-Floriea connection will be together for two seasons.

Mentor Cardinals Football 2018

http://www.news-herald.com/article/H...NEWS/309049967

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the biggest win of the 20th century for the Mentor football program. It was a 19-0 dismantling of the mighty Massillon Tigers. The article is from the 40th anniversary of the game and it features some interesting quotes and tidbits. Mentor was pretty mediocre throughout the 70's, 80's, and 90's. It wasn't until the 2002/2003 seasons that Mentor finally elevated their level of play to what was happening in the late 60's.

Mentor has played Massillon 12 times and managed a 6-6 overall record. In Massillon's well established history, they have an overall winning record against every program they faced with the exceptions of three: St Ignatius, Moeller, and Mentor.

Triv has a winning record against St Ignatius, St Edward, and Massillon - the premier big school programs in NEO.

Mentor played extremely well in the first half. The one blip was a muffed punt late in the first half that led to Glenville's first score. By the time the starters got the score up to 42-6, the game was over. Glenville put up a couple 4th quarter scores when Mentor played a little more relaxed while rotating back and forth from starters to backups.

Glenville should easily finish 8-2, which is a great harbin opportunity for Mentor. Nice to have the Tarblooders on the schedule. Hoping they stay for a long time.

Mentor 45 Strongsville 20

Mentor completely dominated a seemingly overmatched Strongsville team in the first half, 35-0. Mentor got the first score (a field goal) in the second half to go up 38-0. Mentor looked extremely sharp on both sides of the ball in the first 24 minutes. Trobel finished the game with 220 rushing yards and two scores. Kipp was efficient passing, but didn't need to throw the ball much. Strongsville had no answers. The Mustangs did close the game on a 20-7 run...including hurrying up to punch it in as time expired.

For the third straight game, Mentor's offense got complacent in the second half after a comfortable first half lead. That needs to get fixed. Some of that (especially the last two weeks) is due to subbing out some offensive starters. But that isn't the only reason.

Defensively, Mentor kept their starters in throughout the game. The defense looked extremely sloppy on those long touchdown runs. At least 5 or 6 guys missed tackles on the runs by Griffin and Major. After giving up 29 yards and just one first down in the first half, Mentor's first team defense surrendered about 200 yards in the second half. There are some things that need to get cleaned up defensively.

Strongsville, now 3-1, is a probable playoff team. Mentor made them look like a JV team in the first half. But then Strongsville outplayed Mentor in the second half. Not sure what to take from that.

I'm more concerned with the defense missing tackles and thinking that someone else was going to make the play in the second half. The backups probably would have played better in the second half by giving more effort. The offense seemed content in the second half to run the ball with the running clock. Although when you have a running clock, an incomplete pass does not stop the clock from running. I thought that Kipp should hve tried a few long balls to Floreia as he continues to get behind the defense. Kipp did throw the ball well against a sub-par defense.

If Mentor plays the way they should, the next three games should provide a running clock and valuable playing time for the backups. Hopefully the effort is there and no one is looking ahead to Solon and Euclid.

Mentor is still No. 2 in the AP poll, just behind Colerain. The last time Mentor was ranked this high in the second half of the season was in 2011. Mentor was ranked No. 1 entering Week 10 before being upset by Twinsburg. That Mentor team, quite possibly the best one that didn't make a state final, was led by a super offense (Trubisky, Fritts, Krizancic, etc.) along with a promising defense littered up front with DI recruits (Strobel, Laseak, Hanley). I think if Mentor goes 10-0 (which would include wins over Solon and Euclid), they might finish No. 1 in the poll.

Do I really care if they win the AP poll? No. But it is something to talk about as Mentor is in the middle of a lull in the schedule.

Halfway through the season, QB Ian Kipp has thrown for 659 yards and 9 TD's. He has run for over 300 yards and 7 TD's. Not bad at all. The sophomore hasn't been asked to do too much, which is a great situation for him. Without a state final appearance, he won't come close to the passing numbers Tadas Tatarunas put up as a sophomore (over 2,000), and he may never come close to the kind of career passing yards (well over 8,000) either - but Kipp is a different kind of QB. A more mobile, athletic QB that is able to hurt defenses with his feet as well as his arm.

As Mentor begins the second of the season still without a loss, it will be interesting to see how they close the regular season. Solon/Euclid back to back presents quite a challenge. The win or loss will not rely on Kipp as much as it would have with some other Mentor QB's. The running game and defense are more telling parts of the game for Mentor this year.

I agree the 2011 was the best team to not make a state final. The real state final that year was ignatius vs mentor. Jv kids played in the finals when ignatius smoked pick central

Also nice to see good lines on each side of the ball. That's how you win a state title in football and that's why privates win so many of the titles. The talent on the lines doesn't grow on trees and it's easier to get more of them when building your team across several counties instead of one school district

Said this for years. This year mentor can play straight up running the ball and stopping the run instead of the hurry up spread because we are usually at a disadvantage in the trenches

Might not be the most exciting offense to entertain casual fans but could be the ticket to finally having a team that gets over the hump

Long way to go though and many good teams across the state. Only takes 1 bad week and 1 better team and there are 5-6 in the state that can beat us on a given night

Halfway through the season, Cleveland.com lists Mentor as the top defense in the area. A nice compliment, but I'm not ready to crown them yet. The defense is doing well, but there are some areas that need improvement if the team is going to reach the heights it desires.

Mentor 49 Medina 10

The Bees only touchdown was on a pick six, so Mentor's defense kept Medina out of the end zone despite giving up more yards (147) than they probably should have. Trobel had 186 yards and 5 TD's on another big night for him and the offensive line. The playbook opened up a little bit for Kipp and he had one of his highest passing games of the season. Medina loses their fourth straight game after a promising 2-0 start with wins over potential playoff teams, Highland (5-1) and Cleveland Heights (4-2). The Bees first six opponents have a record of 30-5 right now. Strongsville and Solon still remain. According to Pasteur, they have the #4 toughest schedule in all of Division I.

Mentor will take on Shaker Heights (4-1 now, with a likely win over 0-5 Elyria today) in Week 7. That will be followed by the back-to-back Solon/Euclid games that will define who wins the league.

Trubisky must have had flashbacks today of playing against Ignatius or Ed's. Six -- count 'em -- 6 TD passes.

5 in the first half. And guess who had him on the bench on all three of his fantasy football teams?

The two teams have played 20 regular season games dating back to the late 90's. Solon leads the regular season series, 11-9. Mentor has won all four playoff matchups (2002, 2006, 2007, 2011), thus giving the Cards a 13-11 overall edge.

Breaking down that regular season series a little further: Mentor has missed the playoffs eight times since the Solon series began in 1998. Solon is 8-0 against all of those non-playoff teams. Mentor has made the playoffs 11 times since 1998. Solon is 3-8 against Mentor playoff teams in the regular season, and 0-4 in playoff rematches for an overall record of 3-12 against Mentor playoff teams. Solon's three wins over Mentor playoff teams were in 2002 (which Mentor won the playoff rematch), 2010, and 2015.

Just by the luck of it all, it is pretty rare that Mentor and Solon are both very good in the same season. Sometimes they are both playoff teams, but I don't know that both have been serious Region 1 contenders in the same year since 2002. I don't think this year is any different. Solon is struggling offensively and probably unable to be a threat to the big four (Mentor, Eds, Ignatius, and Euclid) in the region.

Injuries are playing a factor in this year's matchup. Solon has been dealing with them all year. It is no secret for anyone present at the game or reading the paper that Mentor QB Ian Kipp had to leave Friday's game against Shaker. Triv went on record saying it wasn't serious though, so hopefully that is accurate.

Defending state champs Pickerington Central were upset by (3-3) Lancaster 31-30. Pickerington had the ball with under 4 minutes to play with a 13 point lead. Instead of running the ball and killing the clock, Pickerington called a pass play and the QB overthrew his receiver and it was intercepted for a touchdown. Pickerington proceeded to go three-and-out their next possession and Lancaster hit on a long pass with time running out for another score. The extra point gave Lancaster a one-point win.

This is not the place for that kind of discussion. We shouldn't give Solon any news that might impact their prep. I imagine they are preparing for Kipp and Floriea this week, which is an advantage compared to only preparing for one. Let's keep it that way. All we know publicly is that Triv said the injury is nothing too serious. Maybe he plays this week, maybe he doesn't. We will find out at game time on Friday.

Kipp hasn't made a huge impact in the box score, but his presence was sorely missed on Friday. He isn't asked to throw the ball a lot. In the biggest win of the season against St Eds, it was his running that was a difference maker. But it is clear that Mentor needs him.

As much as I want to see Mentor finish 10-0, which is something they haven't done since 2003, I wouldn't want to see it happen at the expense of their QB. I would sacrifice a loss or two if that means he has a better chance of being 100% in November. I don't think Mentor would beat Euclid without him, but I think the strength of the defense and running game could be enough to carry Mentor to a win this week over Solon.

Maybe some would be surprised that Mentor hasn't finished 10-0 in 15 years. Considering the schedule they have had, it takes a really special team to finish the regular season unscathed. Mentor has finished 9-1 six times since that 2003 season. St Ignatius knocked off Mentor four of those years. Mentor got payback in the playoffs in three of those four losses. In 2014, Mentor lost to Mitch Guadagni and Hudson in the regular season and in the playoffs.

By far the most surprising loss was in 2011 at Twinsburg. Mentor came into the game 9-0 and ranked No. 1 in the AP poll. Twinsburg completely floored me that night. They legitimately won that game. Their QB and RB were fantastic. And their defense did just enough to frustrate Mentor into more 3rd and longs and punt situations than they saw all year.

In my opinion, the 2011 group was possibly the most talented team on both sides of the ball they ever had. Trubisky, Fritts, Krizancic, etc. on offense. Tom Strobel (Michigan), Kurt Laseak (Ohio U), Jack Hanley (Army), and other talented players on defense. Toward the end of the season, starting with the Twinsburg loss, you could see the weaknesses start to pile up. Mentor squeaked out a 42-40 win over Solon in the regional semifinal after racing out to a 35-7 lead. Then the St Ignatius adjustments and the wind did Mentor in on a less than ideal night at Lakewood. After nine games of dominance, three of the last four games really were shaky at best.

It's not a secret. Mentor has already announced that Floriea will start this week because Kipp has a sprained shoulder. It has been published in the News Herald, so I'm guessing that Solon is aware.

That wasn't on the News-Herald until a couple hours ago. Up until that point, yes that was unknown to Solon and those outside the inner circle of the team. In general, better to be safe than sorry when talking about injuries.

It certainly narrows the gap between Mentor and Solon this week. If their star receiver (Trevon Raphael) is still on the mend, I like Mentor's chances. Solon has been dealing with injuries themselves and were hardly an offensive juggernaut to begin with. Mentor's defense should (key word) be able to keep them in the game. The strength of the team is the running game. As valuable as Kipp is, the drop from him to Floriea is not as significant as it would be in most years in the Tanski-Trubisky-Tatarunas eras. The downside of course is that along with losing Kipp at QB, Mentor's offense loses Floriea as a playmaking receiver.

With an entire week of practice, I think Floriea could be pretty effective behind center. Hopefully the offense has some new wrinkles that give him opportunities to take off. Floriea is faster than Kipp, that is one advantage he does have over him.

If Solon wanted to know that bad, they didn't need to take it to a Bill Belichick level of espionage to find an answer. It was pretty evident and I don't think Triv was trying to hide the fact that Kipp wouldn't play.

A wild and wet game ended with a somewhat surprising ending - the Comets knock off the Cards by going for two in OT.

Mentor's defense played extremely well. There was a lapse on a play or two, but overall it was one of their best performances of the year. The scoreboard won't show it, but the eyeball test confirmed. The defensive line was very disruptive. The linebackers made some plays. The secondary got beat just once, but it was a big one (Solon's game-tying score).

Solon's defense was equally good. Nate Lescovec disrupted many runs in between the tackles. He had a big night. Middle linebacker RJ Howard was a beast. If not for Mentor's Brian Trobel (35 carries, 227 yards), Howard was possibly the best player on the field on either side.

The play of the game was Solon's game tying score. Mentor looked like they had lost all momentum down 14-7, but then two straight great offensive possessions gave Mentor back the momentum with a 21-14 lead. McQuaide drops back to pass and just before Potter nails him, the sophomore QB is able to release a long pass in the corner that was caught for the late 4th quarter tie.

A big difference in the game was turnovers. Both teams each had a critical turnover deep in their own territory. Solon took advantage. Mentor didn't. That was a key difference in the game.
