The Last Ship Season 3

The premier on TV was pushed back due to the Orlando shootings, but the first two episodes are already out online. The first even aired on TV a week ago as a "sneak peek" after one of the NBA games. If you have your DVR set to record new episodes, you should have it.

I'll reserve my comments until more people watch online or it airs on TV.

Seem to be sticking to their MO of moving the plot along by making their characters stupid, JMHO. Potentially good storyline without a solid plan for implementing it.

What I don't get, I really don't get, they're trying to make a mystery of who the real enemy is, but then, the opening credits.... ???

Loved the two episode KO of season 3. This series keeps getting better and better and the pivot to Asia and the geopolitical implications of the plague were really well thought out. IMO this is one of the best hows on TV.

What I really like is the unabashed patriotism of the show and how it presents the US military in a positive, professional light. Kudos to the producers for delivering a compelling, oddly upbeat depiction of the apocalypse and the courageous professionalism of America's armed forces. That the show doesn't descend into empty headed jingoism but maintains a real world feel is a credit to the writer and producers.

If you haven't started watching this show I would recommend that you binge watch seasons 1 & 2 and then sit back and enjoy what looks to be a very compelling season 3.

Interesting twist with how the pirates are fighting the cure. The previews for next week make things look dicey for the ship. Obviously Chandler will have some choices to make

Wow, last nights episode was pretty intense. A "political" can of worms has been opened and they can take this show in a bunch of interesting new directions. As an aside I like how they show the CNN like reporter as a jerk who is doing a lot more damage than good.

Maybe I'm just a geek on this stuff but I thought the stalking of the James by the Chinese destroyers was very well handled. To get so much tension out of a cat & mouse game of hide & seek among some islands without a shot being fired is masterful direction IMO. This show continues to be one of the best on TV and it also does a nice job of showcasing the high level of competence and personal character of US military folks.

This is such a good show and is quickly turning into one of my top 5 favorites Ive ever watched. It'll be interesting to see where they go politically like you said. I have some worries that it could be bad for the James though.

Episode 6 had some good humorous moments, actually intended.

The resolution with the Chinese ships was pretty good though I imagine some Naval types cringed when Tajehaya took the helm instead of just directing. Much better scripting and pacing of events to set that up but that end scene, I snorted. I'm mean, they telegraphed it pretty well so that was no surprise but the method? lol And I'm betting the telegraphing was just red hearing (because you know, they love their cliché), they'll twist it to murder.

I also like the next set-up, the smuggler. Takahaya's wife quickly mentioned something about a "green wave" or fog? Has something to do with why the cure didn't work?

Solid episode last night. I like the contrast in the new president but I suspect there's a lot more to this guy. BTW, are they setting up a situation where the Pacific Northwest "secedes" from the Union?

Don't know but that communications jamming is the next big subplot, be my bet. The President's aid is swarmy so I imagine he's up to something or a red-herring. And we found the significance of the green fog. Plotlines moving along at a good pace.

Seceding: they have some work to do to show good reason other than disagreeing with the marshalling policies. If they strong-arm their own people, boring. If they can show it's a people's initiative, then we'd having something original. Be a tough story to make credible though. They'd have no military, no opportunity to exchange goods....

I'll probably have to rewatch but when they had infiltrated the house of that smuggler, they made an obvious deal of the one Chinese lady sneaking out but then seemed to have dropped it. I must have missed something.

Just watched episode 9 and it was a stunner! The direction they've taken season 3 has been really neat with more twists and turns than I expected. From the battle in the Formosa strait to the shocking political machinations back in Saint Louis The Last Ship has emerged as one of the smartest and most compelling post apocalyptic TV shows ever.

There are no cartoon characters and head scratching behaviors (I'm talking to you Walking Dead franchise), even after 95% of the world has been wiped out people are still people: plotting, scheming & fighting for domination. But also courageous, moral and self sacrificing. Good versus Evil; classic storytelling.

Agreed. This show is firing on all cylinders. The story keeps getting better & better and going in directions I didn't see coming just a couple of episodes ago.

Yea, she is killing it as a very bad lady.

This season they've gone from one intense story (pirates) to another (Peng) to another (Coup) flawlessly. In most series you would be lucky to get just one of those story lines.

I've really enjoyed the past two episodes, maybe two of the best of the entire series.

Still a bit cartoonish for my tastes. Blonde chik over-acting it but the plots are good. None of the regionals really have any credentials or charisma, besides throwing out some stereotypes. Those things should have been established as much as it would have detracted from the Asian story. It simply wouldn't make sense to divide that way, no one has been shown to gain anything with it. Hopefully there's a big bad out there behind this. Nice to see Tex again. Daughter is bad-azz. Seeing some fun with that character. Nice wrap with "Takehaya." China now in limbo and that story left to drop?

My guess is that next season will focus on the "regional" United States fiefdoms and all that goes with it. Look for backstory details, maybe even some flashbacks, early next season to set the stage.

They can still make sense of the story line this season. The bigger problem for me is making the regional characters interesting. They all so far are one-note. My hope is still one-guiding force behind it.

One big boss might keep the storyline within writing skills not to mention, as is how will it not be seriously land-based? They seem to like red-herrings so the regional leadership thing might be that. All the former big-bads are definitely "retired," right?

They can't afford much loss of viewership. Need to get an interesting character in there, make it plausible and keep the reason for the original attraction.

I don't think they're gonna lose any viewership nor do i think there is anything needed to make the show better. This season has been unreal how good it is. Great acting, great storyline. Im all in. Don't think the blond actress is going overboard at all either. Also, obviously in real life it wouldn't make sense in our minds to divide the country up, but it's a tv show. They don't need to do things based on how we think it would happen in real life. Basically disagree with everything you've said. Just enjoy the show, action, and support the good guys

Dividing the country up into fiefdoms makes a lot of sense to me. It's a common theme in much of the "apocalyptic" science fiction I have read. It's very difficult for a central authority to hold it together after 95% of the population has been wiped out. For the "regions" that had to struggle through the plague and then orchestrate a recovery there would be natural resentment of a "federal" authority stepping back in to run things. If you add in unscrupulous people like the folks running the regions in "The Last Ship" you have a perfect recipe for national dissolution.

As to the show, I agree with you 100%. It has gotten better every season and it's about as good as it gets for a weekly TV series. I'm still amazed at how they've had THREE major plot lines moving along in parallel that tie together as neatly as these did. The acting and writing are very good. The special effects and sets are solid and the overall message of duty and doing the right thing is a refreshing change from your typical TV show with a muddled moral message and brooding anti-hero's.

First, let me say this is a great show.

Second, I'm not sure if anyone has thought about this, but I've felt all along that part of the reason we like this show is because it is pretty much an adult version of G.I. Joe (at least from the hero side).

Finally, any else enjoy the teaser at the end of the last episode? SPOILER ALERT... DO NOT SCROLL DOWN IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED IT YET.

What do you want to bet Chandler pulls the old switch-a-roo (using the Chinese vessel) on the ship that we see the missiles hit?

That's exactly what I thought to (or at least hoped is what happened). I've come to learn that the coming attractions are intentionally designed to mislead us!

For me it's less about being an adult "GI Joe" (though there is that aspect to it) and more about reminding me of the old style TV shows of the 60's/70's where there was a moral message of good versus bad. To me it's both refreshing and novel to see characters behave like responsible ADULTS not brooding, navel gazing misfits. Think about the latest Star Trek movie where the young captain Kirk is whining about quitting Star Fleet (can you imagine the 1960's Kirk carrying on like this) so he can find himself. Can you imagine ANY of the senior officers on The Last Ship walking away from their duty? The show nicely captures the personal sacrifice these people are making to benefit the greater good.

Idk about anyone else, but I for sure thought that the black captain(forget his name) was going to screw up their plan when he asked to help during the mission.

That's why I love this show. The Captain was following his duty as he saw it given the information he had. Once he became aware of the betrayal and how he lost his ship due to treachery, he was all in with Chandler. This is very consistent with how they've portrayed these guys from the get go.

The blonde "chick" is Elizabeth Rohm, and previously she was an assistant DA on Law & Order. Of all the female assistant DAs that appeared on that show, she was the only blonde and the only one who got fired by the head DA.
