Here's an article on Pitino's involvement-

http://nypost.com/2017/09/28/this-wa...hoops-scandal/

Let's hope this is the good flush the system needs.

Code, who was Clemson's point guard from 1993 to 1997 and who previously worked as the director of rival Nike's elite youth basketball program, explained why Adidas was paying the player.

"You guys are being introduced to ... how stuff happens with kids and getting into particular schools," Code said during the call. "So this is kind of one of those instances where we needed to step up and help one of our flagship schools in [Louisville], you know, secure a five-star caliber kid. Obviously, that helps, you know, our potential business."
Quote:
After the Louisville assistant left the hotel room, Dawkins and the others discussed the payment plan to the first recruit's family. He said that even though Adidas had agreed to pay him $100,000, a rival athletic apparel company was "coming with a higher number," and he needed to get more money from Adidas to secure the player's commitment to Louisville.
Quote:
With Louisville and its recruits apparently secured, Gatto, Code, Dawkins and Augustine moved on to more pressing concerns -- a second plan to land a recruit they'd been simultaneously scheming about. According to the FBI, they conspired to funnel approximately $150,000 to an unidentified player who was being recruited by the University of Miami. They planned to follow a scheme similar to the one used with the Louisville recruits to keep the player from signing with a school sponsored by a rival apparel company, which they claimed had offered the player $150,000, according to the complaint.

During calls that were intercepted by FBI wiretaps, Gatto asked Code if the payments could be pushed to 2018 because he wasn't sure he could make it work. "I just don't know if I can do anything in '17, that's what I'm saying," Gatto told Code. Gatto then asked Code if the player being recruited by Miami might accept $100,000, which is what they paid the Louisville's recruit. Code said he wasn't sure if his family would take that much less, but he'd try to reduce their offer by $25,000. Code warned Gatto that if they waited until January 2018, the recruit's asking price might be $200,000.

On Aug. 19, Code informed Augustine that Adidas was willing to do what was necessary to help the Hurricanes secure the recruit, but "everything was kind of strapped for '17. So '18 puts us in a better place to have this conversation."
So much money flying around. This sounds like it's even more common than I thought. Man, Nike (and likely others) are gonna get hit hard.

I wouldn't say any of this is shocking. I mean even the offenders aren't very shocking Pearl/Pitino. Maybe the shocking part is Adidas would actually pay 150k for a k is to go to Miami. Not like they are a big time college basketball program. Not to say I am shocked they paid for a kid to go there but 150k seems high for that caliber of a school. I thought the best were getting around 150-200k and that money being spent was only at big time programs. I figured your mid majors/lesser programs maybe paid upwards of 50k.

He may have been referring to my comment. I was just saying it was even more common than I thought. Judging by word choice in that ESPN article, this is 2nd nature to many of these guys... just part of doing everyday business.

Even though it's "not surprising" that it goes on, it's still pretty mind-blowing to actually see the sht hit the fan like this.

Seeing a titan like Pitino get brought down is definitely newsworthy, although itís not surprising he cheated in any way.

This is all I can think of as I read more and more about the scandal. (Language NSFW)

Pitino: "Making the world a better place to be! S-C-H-A-D-E-N-F-R-E-U-D-E!"

Very good read on the legality of how this all being played out

https://www.wsj.com/amp/articles/pro...ies-1506553296
Interesting parts

The government says the universities were the victims of the alleged schemes. Because the universities were unaware of the alleged bribes, they gave financial aid to student athletes who were actually in violation of NCAA rules and therefore ineligible for scholarships. This, in turn, defrauded the universities because it hurt their “decision-making about the distribution of its limited athletic scholarships,” the criminal complaint said.

....

All four coaches were charged with honest-services fraud conspiracy. The government accuses the coaches of depriving the universities of their “honest services” as university employees by soliciting and receiving bribes.

Honest-services fraud is a crime under the federal wire-fraud statute, a broad law that is widely used by prosecutors to charge virtually any type of fraud that involves an email or phone call. Every defendant in this case was also charged with wire-fraud conspiracy.

Edmond Sumner cut ties with Andy Miller who was the agent who's laptop was seized by the FBI. I wonder if the link to Dawkins and Miller will get XU in trouble.

Also Crawford and Semaj were represented by Dawkins and Miller at ASM.

With Sean Miller and Book Richardson being involved there are some ties to Xavier in this deal.

The question is were shoe companies willing to pay these types of players?

Sounds like David Padgett will get the U of L job as interim coach.

I wonder who they go for after this year, probably depends on the sanctions

Never gonna happen. We can hope it leads to the NBA taking their development league seriously and investing in it. Making it a viable option for the elite who will spend 1-2 years in college before going to the NBA.

Adidas says Rick knew about the scheme and supported it. But he took a lie detector test and passed.

Btw he is definitely back on the pills and cocaine hard. Looks like he did after the Sypher fiasco.

Miami is a BIG market. Maybe a mediocre program in a strong market can have as much impact on sales as a strong program in a more isolated place.

Or sometimes they might have to approach whoever might wear their shoe? I heard that BGSU was approached by Sketchers.
