Akron University baseball 2020

I'm curious how the start up is gonna go, will Akron go after 2019/2020 graduates or go the Junior College route. I heard at first it will be a club sport. Meaning playing a MAC schedule but no scholorships to offer. If someone knows different please tell. Sure would like to see Akron go after some local Summit and Stark guys in baseball and football. Does anyone know if they have named a head coach yet?

No scholarships. Hoping for funding from local businesses for players. No head coach and no plan at this point. I don't think there will be many local players interested in that plan, nor would any transfers. I don't believe they have thought about this very thoroughly. The only upside is that are trying to secure Canal Park.

Interesting

One of the reasons they even entertained bringing baseball back is because the old field can't be used for anything but baseball. It was gifted land, thus the reason it was never removed. UofA found out they couldn't do anything with the land.

I disagree that there won’t be any players interested. As it is now, in a school that’s fully funded, D1, there are only 11.7 schollys to share among a 35 man roster. How many guys do you think are playing without athletic $$$? The answer: plenty. Guys are playing for the love of the game in many instances. I have absolutely no idea of Akron’s future plans, but my guess is there will be talented guys that want to play. I wish the program and players much future success.

It will definitely have interest. JC transfers, kids from NE Ohio who went elsewhere and now find themselves not playing may come and try to get a roster spot. I see lots of kids on MAC rosters from NE Ohio not playing, that may very well find them selves on UA's roster in a couple years.

They NEED to hire a coach and a staff so they can start scouting. I’m sure they will be looking at JUCO transfers, but they need to at least get their coaches names going around to high school games and summer tournaments. They should be looking at 15/16 yo kids now.

They’re wasting a whole year if a coach isn’t named by this summer season.

Massarelli? Marconi? And high school guys worth looking at as assistants?

Marconi could grow that program. He would be an ideal candidate. Does anyone know what he is doing currently? Also, is it even possible? I’m wondering if there could be a noncompete clause due to same conference? Does anyone have knowledge of those type of rules?

I think it's going to be tough at Akron for the near future. They don't have great facilities, they don't have a great history of success, and now the past administration has put a lack of stability in the minds of recruits.

They probably need someone to come in that is going to just stabilize the program.

Alex Marconi

Played at St V, KSU, was a catcher in the minors, was a D1 assistant at Kent and Ball State, was head coach at Ball State, and I think he’s still local.

Marconi runs a travel program based out of Hudson called Midwest Stars. I believe he has 3-5 teams at between ages 11u-15u.

I know Marconi is very comfortable spending time with his kids and running the Stars program. He is no hurry to return to coaching at the college level. He was fired anyways so even if he wanted to return, there would be no conflict of interest.

Akron is doing little to attract a decent coach or players, already hampering the program with unreasonable financial restraints.

As of a couple of months ago, I understood they were telling the top coaching candidates that they would get 5 scholarships to work with. Ugh. That will get them on par with the stellar Zips softball program, currently 2-34-1.

5 scholarships? That’s 5 more than I thought they would have. I’m not sure they even have any direction as to where they’re looking for the next head coach.

5 scholarships isnít bad, considering the most a D1 program gets is 11.7. There are plenty of D1s that arenít fully funded, ie providing 11.7 scholarships. If itís true that they have 5, that is good news. They will find a talented coach and players. Competition for coaching spots is fierce and everyone has to start somewhere. Heck, thereís a volunteer D1 coach in every program. Donít ya think some of those guys would like a paid position?

They are losing out on the opportunity to host players at Junior Day events by not having someone in place.

Don't get me wrong Baseballmom13. I'm an alum and a UA supporter. I;d just like to see them go all in, rather than do it halfheartedly.

I just hope they have a coach in place before summer tournaments start. They are already behind in recruiting, I don’t want to see them fall further back.

My guess is they may already have a few people in mind but are waiting for either their college season or high school season to conclude before they make that announcement out of respect for those other programs this person may come from.

It's comical to me that MAC schools can't fund 11.7 scholarships. Most are at 7 -9. Akron, BG, Toledo, OU are roughly $20K tuition/room and board. The differrence between funding 7 and funding 11.7 is less than $100K. Surely there's somewhere that a school that size can find $100k laying around

I agree. 11.7 isnít enough, but with title lX we are stuck with it. Guys that love the game will play no matter what, and they know it.

True, but, they have to know about Akron. Williams is missing out on a ton of PR and contacts by not having someone, anyone, touting the program and hosting Junior Days.

They may even get a football player or two that has time to play some baseball again.
