Springfield 76 Fairmont 61

Springfield didn't have a letdown after their win over Wayne with a wire to wire 76-61 win over Fairmont on Senior night.

RaHeim Moss showed no ill effects of the injury that caused him to miss the 4th quarter of the Wayne game. He started the game with a 10 foot jump shot, hit a 3 to put Cats up 5-0, then had a dunk giving the Cats an early 9-2 lead. Fairmont cut the score to 9-8, but after one the Cats led 18-13, Fairmont would get no closer. Springfield extended the lead to 13 at 39-26 at the break thanks to a Taylor three from the corner at the buzzer.

Springfield pushed the lead to 19 a couple times in the second half but Fairmont never got closer than 13. Cats led 56-40 after 3. Fairmont outscored the Cats in the final frame 21-20 for the final 15 point margin.

Taylor led the Cats with 17, Moss and Howard each added 14.

Springfield finishes GWOC play with a 10-2 record and now waits to see if Centerville can pull the upset at Wayne for a share of the league title (Go Elks!).

Next up is a trip to Trotwood on Friday then back home Saturday to close out the season against Middletown (first Springfield/Middletown matchup since 1960 when both were members of the GOL*).

*Springfield split into North and South in 1960. Springfield South and Middletown played twice a year in the GOL from the 60's through the mid 70's when the Cats joined the WOL. They continued playing twice a year into the 80's, when Butch Carter ended the series after a loss at South that he felt was stolen from him. Since the rivalry ended the Cats have played Middletown once or twice in postseason, but haven played in the regular season since at least 1988. It'll be nice to see what was once one of the best rivalries in the state rekindled on Saturday.

GO CATS!!!!!!!

Middies coming off that 23 point effort vs. the lock-down Oak Hills defense--better score about 40 more than that to beat Springfield Saturday.

First time they played in mid-December and Mason led 53-32 heading to 4th quarter and pulled the starters a couple minutes into the 4th qtr--to win 58-49. Also big 6'10 EJ Williams was not playing yet for Middletown as well as 6'6 McGhee, who both played in the 2nd game in late January when the Middies beat Mason 47-42--that height in the zone caused Mason a bunch of problems.
The Middies are very big in that zone, so Springfield will need to hit perimeter shots--Middies just don't score much if EJ can't get shots--Middies scored 23 last night vs. Oak Hills as EJ was 2/3 for 4 pts total.
