Bevo,

Yes, I'm aware of #5, and didn't answer yesterday because I had used my
3 guess allotment. I agree they were almost magical. . .do you believe in magic?

And, the jackhammer drum in what "Lovin' Spoonful" summer song?

Great group! Saw them sans John S. about three years ago. Sounded great and I see they are going to be in Marion at the Palace Theater , I believe, this fall. Of course , w/o John it can't be the same - still all of the others are originals

16, 18 and 27 remain from this hot summer quiz. We know that one answer is Martha and the Vandellas.

Google your arses off!

I also wanted to say for future reference; the following summer songs were great guesses and could have pushed the question number to 34.

I recalled "Sealed with a Kiss"; by Bryan (Brian) Hyland. Others mentioned by all of you included: Cheryl Crow's "Soak Up The Sun" (I don't recall any of my friends' moms looking like her at 54!!), "Palisades' Park", by Freddy Cannon and as established written by the wonderful goof ball, Chuck Barris, and "Peter and Gordan's "Yesterday Is Gone". I'm quite sure there are many more out there.

Also, if you want to really immerse yourself in all of this, pick up former Esquire columnist and Chicago newspaper writer, Bob Green's "When We Get to Surf City". Green, I would guess is in his late 60's. One night while attending an Oldies' show with Jan and Dean, featuring Jan and Dean he was ask to help sing "Surf City". Thus, began a 15 - year trek on the back roads to fairgrounds, festivals and dining halls singing with the band.

Everyone who answered a question on here should give it a read.

BlackHawk,

Well I'm glad someone took advantage of that extra clue, lol. I was beginning to wonder. The song Bevo was looking for was " Summer In The City" it was hotter than a matchhead as they say.

AFWPATFIRE - yes and yes.

One to go, hope I had the info. right on this. It's really a well-known song. What is the band "on the blanket with my baby's where I'll be"?

AFWATFIRE is correct with "Under the Boardwalk" by "THE DRIFTERS".

In reviewing the proceedings for what seems like the 500th. time , I believe we have one piece left. I am still looking for the performers for "Summertime", No. 11. MONCLOVA gave us the name of the tune and then had a real good effort with his guess.

I checked again a bit ago and I still come up with two different performers. Both were major Black performers. In my youth, one use to break a glass with her voice and the other had the cheeks for blowing the horn. I believe the lady use to "scat" and the gentleman had a beer barrel, rollicking kind of voice.

I didn't realize that we were still make guesses (since I thought I was tapped out). I remember "Summertime, Summertime" as being recorded by The Jamies.

Oops, I've got the wrong song. We were looking for "Summertime". How about Ricky Nelson or Sam Cooke?

This might look like I didn't follow the rules, but I did have three guesses: The Jamies, Ricky Nelson and Sam Cooke.

That being said, I did use reference materials to come up with Ricky and Sam. I'd have had the correct answer IF the question was "Summertime, Summertime". Oh well, if "ifs and buts were candy and nuts, every day would be Christmas".

ROCK ON!

11. We are out gas! The performers were Ella Fitzgerald and Louis (Louie) Armstrong.

I will attempt a summary of all of the above later.

This might be as bad as it gets! I used reference materials and still missed #11. Oh well, there will be a lot more trivia questions that I'll miss.

Thanks for this, Bevo. Your latest clues about the pair who recorded the song made the light bulb go off for me. Alas, I'm too late for the party, as usual.

I'm echoing Monclova Steve in that Bevo posted an outstanding trivia quiz. As I previously stated, creating a quiz, posting it and then "grading" or determining the correct answers is not an easy chore.

I say let's give Bevo a big "shout-out":

Super job, Bevo! A 30-question trivia quiz is extremely tough to create and to keep track of the correct answers. Kudos to you, an AARP Boys Hall of Famer.

I'll post a quiz tomorrow (after 12:00 noon), but it will not be as intricate as Bevo's.

Well, here we go with the latest trivia quiz - half hoops and half music. It isn't nearly as challenging as Bevo's quiz, but it should be interesting. As is the usual procedure, NO GOOGLING and only THREE GUESSES per day (clock resets at midnight):

1970s COLLEGE PLAYERS (identify the school each player represented)

Easy
1. Tom Burleson
2. Bob McAdoo
3. Jim Brewer
4. Billy Knight
5. Doug Collins

Medium
6. John Roche
7. Ron Lee
8. Larry Finch
9. Leon Douglas
10. Kermit Washington

Hard
11. Calvin Natt
12. Sly Williams
13. Kennedy McIntosh
14. Lloyd Neal
15. Frankie Sanders

Hoops Extra-Credit:

A. What school led the nation in HOME attendance in 1970-71?

B. Between "Pistol Pete" Maravich (1970) and Bo Lamar (1972), I led the nation in scoring in 1972. Who Am I?

C. From Portland State, I led the nation in scoring in 1977 and 1978. Who Am I?

MUSIC LYRICS (all deal with cars, traveling, and/or roads)

16. Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine

17. We rented a truck and a semi to go
Travel down the long and winding road.
Look on the map, I think we've been here before.

18. All I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one
Until the sun comes up
over Santa Monica Boulevard.

19. Though it's only been a month or so
That old car's buggin' us to go
We've gotta get away and get back on
The road again.

20. Those windshield wipers slappin' out a tempo
Keeping perfect rhythm with the song on the radio...

21. I know every engineer on every train
All of their children, and all of their names
And every handout in every town

22. Take a little trip, take a little trip
Take a little trip and see
Take a little trip, take a little trip
Take a little trip with me.

23. She's got a competition clutch with the four on the floor
And she purrs like a kitten till the lake pipes roar.

24. You oughta see her on a road course or a quarter mile
This little modified Pon-Pon has got plenty of style
She beats the gassers and the rail jobs....

25. Crushed velvet seats
Riding in the back
Oozing down the street
Waving to the girls
Feeling out of sight....

Music Extra-Credit (not automobile related):
D. I was influenced by Fats Domino and my song "Ain't Got No Home" earned me a nickname. Who Am I?

E. She was known as "Miss Peaches", but what was Etta James' real first name?

F. What was the name of Huey "Piano" Smith's group?

Outstanding, rdlwolverine, with your recognition of Kennedy McIntosh. I attended EMU back then and had very fond memories of his exploits, along with Harvey Marlatt and -- a year or two later -- George Gervin.
You may have stolen my answer, but it's nice that someone else knew it.

On to the quiz:

#1. Tom Burleson -- NC State
#2. Bob McAdoo -- North Carolina
#3. Jim Brewer -- Minnesota

Call me the champion of low-hanging fruit, lol.

#5. Doug Collins - Illinois State
#15. Frankie Sanders - Southern U.

I remember Sanders when he played ball at the now closed Stivers HS (Dayton) in the 1970's. The big debate in Dayton was: "Who is the best HS player in the Dayton area?" Jim Paxson, Jr. of Alter (Kettering) or Frankie Sanders.

So far, all of the answers (listed below) are correct. Bevo seems to have a problem with Sheryl Crow being mentioned again, but that's OK. Sheryl Crow has a standing invitation to the AARP Thread. Monclova Steve mentioned a few things of interest: (1) low-hanging fruit and (2) EMU. No offense Monclova Steve, but the original "champion of low-hanging fruit" is our CEO and founder, doubledribble himself. He made it an art form. Also, I've visited Eastern Michigan many times over the years and I just never enjoyed playing, coaching or being a spectator at Bowen Fieldhouse. To me, it just didn't seem like a good environment for hoops. It's no knock on EMU, but I just didn't like that venue. At least, there is a new facility and the Convocation Center is a huge upgrade. On a side-bar, BlackHawk's mention of Frankie Sanders brings back memories of him in the state tournament. He sure was fun to watch!

Below are the correct answers that have been submitted so far. Also, here is the "after dinner update" and I'll update one more time before midnight. As per usual, after midnight all will be permitted three more guesses, but still no Googling.

While there is a slight lull in the action, let's be clear, Sheryl Crow can join up with us any time! I've forgotten the answer but she was a back up singer to a pretty big name. I want to say Prince. Anyone?

I also wanted to know if anyone saw the clip of Second Lieutenant Sam Kendricks, USA pole vaulter during his warmup? Upon his approach and just before he rammed his pole into the box, the US anthem began to play for another participant. Kendricks, in full stride, came to a halt, lay his pole down, and stood at "attention" as the anthem was played. My oh my; he also won a bronze. Outstanding.

I thought this was quite a contrast to Ryan Lochte saying 8 separate times while being interviewed by Matt Lauer, that he had "over exaggerated" his statement. What in the world does this mean? Doesn't it imply that I know I am exaggerating but I messed up by overdoing. That is his mea culpa?! Who ever got him ready for his "close up" did him no favors. He was a disaster. I hope he loses all of it.
