Worst purchase

Back around 1994 my middle daughter was taking piano lesson (very good) and my wife also played the piano. I bought a new Kohler Campbell Gloss Black Baby Grand Piano. Daughter has moved away and wife does not play much any more. The piano has been sitting taking up space and a huge dust collector. We are starting to looking to down size and i can only imagine the issue of getting rid of this piano and the lost of value.

What has been some of your worst purchases?

Looking back at the 5/23 thread it made me think of BCF/Main Event. Didn’t that guy spend like $1200 on a putting green? That had to be one of the biggest wastes of $ I’ve ever heard of. And that guy was an Accountant ffs.

Baby Grands in very good to mint condition are always desirable, especially for folks moving into high square footage suburban homes that use them as showy furniture to takes up space. That being said one of the biggest costs is moving and setting up the sucker and that is what helps drive down the price in a resale market. I know someone who instead went the donation route as schools and churches are always looking for a beautiful show piece to put on a stage or altar and they pick up the moving tab. Not sure about Kohler's but high end instruments like Steinway's actually appreciate in value.

We bought some wood laminate four years ago, which my wife determined she could install herself. She learned the hard way that it's harder than it looks. If it had been properly installed, would have looked great. But she took shortcuts, left some gaps, some boards worked loose - not a very good look.

We finally bit the bullet last fall, pulled the flooring up, and paid Rite Rug to put in a very nice vinyl laminate instead. Money well spent there.

It did help that we were able to sell the four year-old laminate on Craigslist for about one-fifth of what we paid for it, but still an expensive lesson.

I hear you. Depends on what shape it's in, and how you market it.

We had a used upright I got for a song (sorry about that - actually $35), because my son wanted to use it to work out his school band parts, and because my wife wanted to take lessons. That was 12 years ago, and it collected dust for the last 7 years.

Before we had our flooring professional installed (see above), my wife was looking for hauling businesses to take the piano away, but the cheapest quote was $200. I told her I could do better than that, and put it on Craigslist for free. Touted it as a cheap practice tool for utes.

Two days later, four young, strong college kids showed up in a rental van - it was a struggle, but they carried it out and got it in the van (I even threw in the heavy dolly that had come with it).

I didn't say a word to the wife, but my expression was screaming "Toldja so!".

1977 Monte Carlo.

Had it a little more than a year and the front wheel fell off. Just fell right off. Day after Christmas in Toledo....try to find a tow truck....

Had a junk 305 engine in it too. Paint was bad. All around by far the worst vehicle I ever owned.

1977 was about the peak in UAW quality.

Stuck in Toledo? Bar or church on every block, all bases covered.

Johnny Lightning race track. $19.99 in the JCPenney toy department. It could only be assembled and used in one configuration. I regretted having bought it after two days.

I bought it myself after I didn't get it from Santa Claus. I was 7 or 8. Lots of allowance money for that one lesson in buyer's remorse. I put more thought into every single purchase I've made ever since.

I bought a Super Nintendo in July 1996, two months before the N64 came out. I'd saved for months (Christmas, report cards, birthday, chores, etc.) And I was 7 so really had no idea a new system was coming. I ended up only owning it for a little over a year and only bought about 4 games for it.

I would have to say it was the money and two years I wasted getting a masters degree from a "prestigious" university. I never had any use for it and I have no idea where my printed degree is now.

1200 for a putting green doesnt seem that bad, depending on what else you spend your money on.

Considering he only wore jorts and wife beaters and was on record saying Taco Bell constitutes fine dining I dont think he was spending much money. Also add in the fact the dude had cancer and was going to die with no kids, I would be spending money on what brought me joy

I donít think he knew he was going to die. Can anyone confirm if he actually did pass? If I recall, he was about to get married and started a new job.

Usually I'm not an early adopter, but early after VCRs came out I purchased one for $1K, iirc. Not too many years later, much improved models could be had for a tenth of that (again iirc).

Except that my better half used it to play her Denise Austin workout tapes, it got little use. Come to think of it, that may have been money well spent!

Bunch of snacks for the fight of the century, Norton vs. Bobick. An engagement ring (or two). Sea Monkeys. Pontiac Sunbird. Gym membership. 24in LCD Tv. Had it for 10 years so I guess that's a good buy, even though I've probably not watched it 40 hours total.

That’s a cheap putting green. I installed one for a customer last year at $6k.
