Chernobyl

New HBO mini-series.

I watched the first episode and thought it was really good.

Great opening episode to what is shaping up to be a fascinating mini-series.

First off, though a true story this plays as a terrifying horror story. The scene where the people are on the bridge watching the pretty lights in the reactor fire while radioactive ash falls on their children & baby's was gut wrenching.

This is also a cautionary tale of what type of governments to avoid. Sure, ANY government can screw things up and try to cover up for their mistakes. But the sheer incompetence and gross negligence exhibited by the communist Soviet authorities here is breathtaking.

EVERY manager and senior engineer puts all their energy and effort towards CYA. Only at the lower levels is courage & common sense shown and it's quickly squashed by their superiors. So far this is a haunting tale of a bureaucracy run amok.

I was amused that Jarred Harris hung himself in the opening scene just as he did on Mad Men. That's some odd form of typecasting.

I was posted to West Berlin at the time. I had requested a satellite be moved to have a look at activity in the Kiev area. Myself and two others with "need to know" clearances watched the Chernobyl reactor burn for most of three days before the Soviets said anything at all about it.

That is wild.

The second episode Monday was great as well IMO. Staying pretty accurate.

As everyone mentioned the denial was amazing. No one wanted to be wrong and yet everyone involved threw everyone else under the bus (mid level bureaucrats).

When I was in the field I was not an "inside" type but work got really slow in 2008 and I took a job decommissioning the Fermi I nuclear facility in Monroe, MI. Fermi II was built for commercial purposes and still operates today but Fermi I was built in the late 40's or early 50's as a military nuclear plant. Very spooky as all the lighting was from the era (that yellow dull tint) and even more spooky to watch your dosimeter rise in number knowing you are getting dosed with radiation yet not feeling, sensing, or seeing a thing. Nuclear power has always intrigued me for that reason. Not to mention it's extremely high risk in the event of a mistake.

Watching this and seeing government officials get angry whenever people ask questions (or use logic to point out flaws in their lies) reminds me a lot of our country today.

The media would have you believe the general public is all morons when in reality the government is full of idiots who just want you to shut up and follow their orders even if thatíll get you killed. Sad

I wonder if I heard it right when the powers that be offered three people to volunteer, and face sure death, 400 rubles . Was that a one-time reward or did it extend to the families of the volunteers for years? If it was the former, the Soviet leadership was cheap as well as blind to the consequences to a breached core.

SPOILER ALERT

Last episode ends with them in the flooded pipe/duct bank beneath the reactor and their flashlights go out. Yes, three brave souls volunteered.

Next episode will surely show the outcome of the three for the show but they all three lived at least another 15 years in real life. I'm sure their actions took certain years off of their lives and saved possibly millions.

I also wondered about the helicopter crash and found out that was true and there is actual youtube footage of it here.

Episode 2 was even better then the first episode! This is an amazingly well done mini-series. The ending with the men in tunnels under the plant, water up to their wastes and their flash lights going out was more terrifying then anything on the Walking dead since season 2!

A couple of observations:

* So far this show has been more critical of communism then any show or movie I've seen in at least 30 years. Given that there has been more evil & genocide committed by communist regimes over the last century then Nazi Germany ever managed to accomplish, the lack of "evil" commie stories has always surprised me. I mean it's not like we lack for evil Nazi stories.

* The show also makes it clear that you underestimate the Russian people if you think their feckless, ineffective leadership is the whole story. The Russians have a long history of exhibiting startling courage & fortitude when the Motherland is at risk. Just ask the Germans in Front of Moscow in 1941 or at Stalingrad in 1942. Hell Napoleon would concur!

* One good thing we've learned since Chernobyl is that while acute radiation poisoning is every bit as deadly as believed sub acute doses are not nearly as harmful to life as once thought. I believe the survival rate of people exposed has been much higher on average then expected. And recent studies have shown that the ecology in the Chernobyl region has rebounded spectacularly. My guess is that life on earth is more resistant to radiation thanks to the occasional blasts from our sun over the eons.

I'm curious if at the end of the series whether they will give the number killed by the explosion and its aftermath. Also wondering if the series will be shown on Russian TV. My guess is a resounding NYET.

You don't need to be a socialist to play "cover my azz." They do that pretty well here too.

I'm going to guess same but I doubt they could even come up with a remotely accurate number, much like we'll never know for sure how many 9/11 will eventually claim.

I do not think anyone really knows (nor will we ever) the exact number killed let alone those killed immediately, within a year, and beyond due directly to Chernobyl.

The series does a pretty good job of showing the ineptness and downright dereliction of the Soviet government. Pay high dollar for a German robot but do not tell them the amount of radiation it will be exposed to because the USSR is incapable of having such a disaster and therefore the thing will never work. Brilliant. Lots of brave souls will spend 90 seconds of their lives clearing the ruble. Everyone points to the Cold War and Reagan outspending the Soviet's to their downfall and of course that is broad stroked but this event certainly did not help. The resources they had to use for this one event is astronomical (manpower alone).

Yeah, killing pets would blow. I imagine that is why they received unlimited vodka. That and the exposure. Good grief.

The amount of vodka they drink and cigarettes they smoke is only going to complicate any epidemiological read on how many people had their lifespans shortened from any sub-acute exposure to radiation.

BTW, this is one of the best and most original series I've seen in a long while. The acting is fantastic and the tight pacing is brilliant. The use of the Geiger counter sounds whenever they're involved in dangerous work really ratchets up the tension.

This series should be required viewing by any high school or college level poly-sci or civics class. It is a brilliant take down of the overly bureaucratic socialist state.

What I especially admire is how well they captured the banality of evil permeating the Soviet system yet manage to convey the heroic nature of the Russian people. These are the same people who in spite of the rank incompetence of their political & military leadership beat the Nazis in WW2.

I don't think the Russians could have beat the Germans without Stalin's complete indifference to the suffering and deaths of the Russian people and his willingness to murder them if they did not agree to sacrifice their lives.

I agree the Soviet's simply had so much more manpower that they overwhelmed the German's who were fighting on two fronts. Tough SOB's nonetheless.

It was interesting that they showed Soviet's climbing the stack to put the Soviet flag on top. As if some sort of badge of honor amongst them as the worst nuclear disaster is beneath them. Very symbolic if almost tongue in cheek.
