Beautiful Boy (2018)- I know some of you guys saw this last month so I am a little late the game. Wonderful acting from Steve Carell and Timothee Chalomet. Movie follows the father/son relationship through the son's addiction with flashbacks of the son as he's growing up. One of the more depressing movies I've seen in a while, but pretty well done. 5.5/8.

Duel (1971): Steven Spielberg’s directorial debut thrills, with some good old-fashioned, ‘70s-style road rage. 6.5/8

Mary Queen of Scots - Wonderful costume drama focusing on the conflict between Queen Elizabeth I and her cousin, Queen Mary of Scotland. Every aspect of 16th England and Scotland were nailed, save one. I see a lot of stage productions, especially Shakespeare and never balk at the use of diverse actors in various roles. Obviously, Othello requires someone other than a white European to play the lead as racial issues are at the heart of the play. That aside it was not unusual to see minorities play Shakespearean characters as the plays and personalities are quite universal. In Mary Queen of Scots, they cast the film more like a stage production and had a number of minorities playing the parts of English nobles. This surprised me and took me a moment to get used to, but the performances were such that it was easy to put that issue aside.

The two female leads were very well acted. I am surprised that a Academy nod did not come their way.

Not a perfect film, there were some loss of continuity in the story narrative, but a very good film.

6/8

A Star Is Born - 6/8

Pretty good but I agree with critics didn’t love the second half. The movie was stellar until it became about his fall rather her rise.

Glass - 6/8

A very worthy capper to the trilogy. The ending could have been given a little more leadup/foreshadowing earlier in the movie that would have put it over the top.

Will someone please give James McAvoy an Oscar?

No, I'm pretty sure I ranked it 5/8. Let me check my post. Yep, 5/8. I can see why it would be really liked by some. For ME? Just didn't hit the notes.

I really didn't think much of Pitt's character and as much as I generally like his acting, didn't think he kept up with the others on this one (though last scene well done). There wasn't any back-story in either the bad nor the family to grab my attention, let alone sympathies or empathies. The bad didn't even show up until everything had pretty much been decided, there was no "guessing" who it might be, no hiding in plain sight with one silly exception that had no meaning.

Much of what I've now read in the reviews extoll the movie for it's graphical presentation, not its plot. Well guess what doesn't show up on a laptop? If the movie had any point, I missed it.

5 pts because I really did like most of the characters and acting but points lost for pacing (it was like they ran out of ideas after the first two murders then zipped the next three, leaving an obvious two), reliance of crutches (mostly just trying to be gross) and convenience driven plot. Three parts particularly I didn't need: the overly long chase, the overly long nonsense in the car at the end and the attempts at characteization at the house.

Night Warning (1981)

Horror: Saw this one on TCM under the title "Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker". A teen boy is raised by his aunt but there is no toys in the attic in this one but something is going on here, something a bit maddening..... Cheryl Roberts is incredible in this one playing the aunt. How I have never heard of this one before ... absolutely loved it.... 6.5/8

Or, at least a nomination?

Paid attention to him ever since he was in 2006's The Last King of Scotland and think, with his performances in Split and Glass, he's definitely deserving.

Not a fan of Platoon. 2/8.
Missed a great Super Bowl.

For over 58 minutes it was a 1 score ballgame.

Cannot get any closer than that.

Hostage (2005) 4/8 Bruce Willis movie I had never seen. He plays a police chief and former hostage negotiator that gets caught up in a hostage situation with a twist. Not his best work, but worth a watch.

The Express: 4/8 Terribly inaccurate I guess and typically for Hollywood, with no good reason. But they really stepped over the line, desperately wanted to over play "racial hatred" so decided no one would notice if they threw W Virginia U under the bus. Except the SYRACUSE players (black and white) backed the response from WVU, saying, it ain't so. So if you can ignore the inaccuracies and just enjoy the story, it's football, whats to complain about?

Soul Survivor (1984)

Horror: A soul survivor of a plane crash feels that something is not right as she starts to see strange people. This was pretty good and I am curious if the writers of "Final Destination" had seen this.... 5.5/8

Wayne S1: 6.75/8. YouTube Original, but it’s on the torrent sites as well. Quirky dark comedy with a lot of violence and, good acting from the young leads.

American Honey (2016): An impoverished teen runs off with a band of gypsy-like misfits when she becomes intrigued by one of its members (played by Shia LaBeouf!) and road trips/partys cross-country with them in pursuit of the American Dream. Written/directed by Andrea Arnold (with DP, Robbie Ryan) who also gave audiences the compelling 2011 adaptation of Wuthering Heights. 6.5/8

Moonlight (2016): Moving story of a gay black boy growing up in the hood. 7/8

I watched AH on Prime, it was very good. I’d score it 6.5 as well. The dialogue was excellent. I hate when you can tell how conversations are scripted in certain movies. Here you’ve got a bunch of stray, dirty teens basically riding the rails. They’re not going to speak in well structured, complete sentences. It’s going to be a lot of slang interspersed with unnecessary swearing.

I appreciated that they casted actors who look like actual teenagers, not full grown adults in their 20s. The movie is depressing at times and that feeling is compounded by the authenticity of the acting and dialogue.

My understanding is that there was no scripted dialogue. Right before filming a scene, the actors were given descriptions of what was going on with the story and told what was generally supposed to be discussed in the scene, but were encouraged to converse in a way that felt natural to them. And apparently, most of the kids in the movie (including the lead actress) were ‘non-actors,’ discovered and cast for authenticity:

https://www.theringer.com/2016/9/29/...t-d056f20d324f

The film captured both the essence of youth and of freedom, but I agree that it could also be depressing at times (especially, at the end, when I remembered that the main character couldn’t swim).

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1998) - 3/8

Based on Hunter S. Thompson's part-fact/part-fiction book.

The story revolves around two very unlikable main characters on a bizarre drugged out Las Vegas trip. The main characters are self-absorbed, hedonistic, disrespectful jerks. You can only watch so much puking, paranoia, hotel room destruction and psychedelic drug trips before it gets extremely boring. I usually enjoy Terry Gilliam's unconventional movies ("Brazil", etc.), but not this one.

Amen. I have no problem with "quirky", but that movie is just one weird snoozefest. Like the same joke being told over and over hundreds of times.

I watched the Mr. Roger's documentary, Won't You Be My Neighbor, tonight on PBS. I was surprised it was already on broadcast TV. Very good documentary about a very good man. I still thought They Will Not Grow Old was better and deserved a Oscar nomination more than this film and the RBG film (although I have to admit I have not seen this one and likely won't as I do not believe she is worthy of such a tribute).

6/8
