Marion Local vs Cornerstone Christian

For ML to win this game Bruns is going to have to have a huge game. Mescher will probably have trouble scoring against CCA size. Not sure how ML will stop Bothwell maybe a box and 1 or 1-3-1 zone. Doubt if the Flyers can match up man to man. Prediction ML 55 - CCA 53 at least I hope.

I think Marion Local will be able to handle there own against Cornerstone Christian. CCA will have the quickness to its advantage but Marion Local will have the muscle. If Marion Local can stay with 5 thru 3 quarters I like the Flyers chances of winning. Marion Local can though some height and muscle at CCA that they probably have not faced in tourney.

Interesting matchup. The Flyers have size/strength that CCA has probably not seen this postseason, but I don't think their ball handling is as good as Hiland's. I expect Bruns to be stellar.

ML can win, but will have to be able to run their offense more effectively than they did in first half vs PG. I would be tempted to play a 1-3-1 to rest a bit on defense. Bothwell passes so well chasing him and his passes all over the floor will be very exhausting. Add to that the energy required to break the press every time up the floor. Can not turn the ball over on the pass to the post like they did vs PG. I'm pulling for ML but my gut says Cornerstone by 10-15.

No disrespect to ML but there is not much CCA has not seen. They played and beat Garfield Heights this year and they had two guys over 6'9. They are beatable but not by anybody in D4.

Some of you guys from NEO are delusional. Cornerstone is a great team for D4 but they're hardly unbeatable. All I heard this week was how Hiland stood no chance, and they would have been right there at the end if Bothwell didn't hit that dagger 3 to end the 3rd quarter. Cornerstone is the favorite, but the Flyers' best game gives them a shot to win. An "ok" game by their standards probably loses by between 10-15 points.

Not unbeatable, but the stats from the Hiland game seem to show Cornerstone left a lot of points on the table by shooting awful from the foul line.....missing 15 free throws 17/32 (53%) in a 10 point win.

By comparison Hiland missed 4 free throws 10/14 (71%).

In a game I watched in person (an 11 point loss to Cardinal Stritch), Cornerstone shot 56% from the foul line. I am not sure how many they took, but poor foul shooting appears to be an issue for a very solid team.

This time of the year EVERYBODY is beatable. I think it's highly disrespectful to think a team that has made it this far is going to get blown out or have no chance. Do I think CCA is the best team in D4 - yes. Do I think they will win - yes. Do I think they will blowout ML - no. This is for a state title. You have to think ML is going to play harder then ever before and CCA as the favorite had better not look past them or read the press clippings. I expect a very close game.

I would say that this boils down to how ML can handle the press. Length will serve some problems to ML's smaller guards. While I was impressed with Bothwell, ML just beat a team with a very hot Drew Johnson, whom can score at will as well. CCA looks extremely athletic but as far as sound defense goes, ML contained Johnson to THREE second half points. And Mescher who was shorter than most of his defensive opponents this year still found a way to be dominant. Bruns is just clutch. I haven't seen a more clutch performance down the stretch of the final two minutes in a tight state D IV game in awhile.

Prediction.....ML is no stranger to state games as they seem to be on the cusp every year in basketball and are there in football every year.....no advantage to the "big stage" for either team as CCA is well accustomed to state the past couple of years.

MLMS 60 - CCA 55. The crowd will be a factor

This is the second "live" game I've seen Phillips (PG) play in. He is a ball hawk. No other post in the 2018 run to state has created turnovers like he does (by what I've seen in box scores and live). I don't see CCA being able to do the same. BUT, ML doesn't have the ball handlers Hilard had. Hilard put five guys on the floor that could dribble and pass through a defense. Passing still needs to be sound for ML

Good analysis on defense. I like the 1-3-1 approach. If Bothwell gets his (regardless of the D) and Bruns or Mescher can match, I like ML's chances.

This is not the gridiron.

CC wins easily.

Stop being a MAC homer.

One thing that has to be considered--The Flyers are proven winners at the State level with this group of athletes. They will NOT be intimidated. They will NOT be in awe of CC. At this level of play, attitude plays a big part. MSML will be prepared and confident. Upset special: Flyers by 2.

Haha. Yeah. CCA is a really good team. Def favorites. However, I expected more. All state teams in D IV looked fairly equal. CCA having the “best” looking team of the four. But nothing like trotwood or any other dominant teams we’ve seen in Columbus. I would definitely bet the spread on Marion local. If there were such a thing....

Other than Bothwell and Saunders I was not overly impressed with CCA. After today maybe I will be. What ever the outcome I did not expect ML to make it this far, pleasant surprise.

Cornerstone has been winning without Bothwell going off. This is his last high school game. This might be when it happens.

Win or lose, I love everything that Marion Local stands for. I don't get into the "public vs. private" crap because there are reasons why parents send their kids where they send them. That said, you can tell that ML never makes excuses. The fact that they've defined their own success is a testiment to their entire community because it takes a village to raise a child.

I'm a NEO guy, but I love what ML is doing right now. Keep it up!

Cornerstone is getting killed on the boards. Marion’s best offense is rebounding a missed shot.

33-30 CCA heading into the 4th.

Refs bailed out Bothwell and friends with a couple suspect calls to end the 3rd quarter. I think this ultimately comes down to whether or not he can close it. He's by far the best player on the floor, but Marion's trio is outperforming the rest of CCA's team.
