OHSAA Dynasties

Cleveland Plain Dealer had an article today listing the top schools for State Championships across OHSAA sports.

http://www.cleveland.com/sports/inde...ml#incart_2box

A quote about "combined state titles" got me curious.

The record for the most combined state titles by any high school belongs to Hawken with a total of 179. The Hawks are trailed by Upper Arlington (176) and St. Xavier (163).

I know UA claims a zilliion state titles going back 100 years. Is that 163 number for St. X counting individual swimming golds, plus team titles? Just curious where that number comes from.

I don't know where the X number comes from but do they count each individual wrestling weight class and each first place in track and field events as a State title? I doubt it. St x has won the swimming state title forever not sure how many other titles they have. Remember they can only win Boys titles so their opportunities are half of most schools.

Does tomorrow’s edition include programs with more than 20 state titles cause I’s got Massillon at one.

Journalism is dead.

Do some research, Lordy

Do they count "Fake State Titles"?
(Sorry, but someone had to ask!)

Not sure where they get the numbers from. If they include individual titles St. Edward has 55 team titles and 108 individual wrestling. That is 163 already, plus some track I believe so more (12 or so). If they include non-OHSAA, then add in Rugby, Indoor Track, and Volleyball.

I guess that means I am skeptical on their numbers.

Oh, that's right. St. Ed's now gets to collect two titles each year for the same sport.

OHSAA has been inconsistent with that. They "recognize them" in that you'll find a list in their history section. But when it comes to adding up state titles they only use tournament titles. I usually try to use the term "OHSAA tournament titles" when I post some data since my database does not include non-OHSAA and poll titles.

Yes, true. However, from 1947-1971, the OHSAA recognized the AP Poll that determined the state champion.

If they count water polo, rowing, and curling state titles, no one will touch UA. Game over.

Thanks for your wisdom. Regardless, what I posted is accurate. By the way, your anti-Massillon rhetoric is tiresome. Most people that have these feelings about a particular community wouldn't have anything with that community.
