Fair or Foul?

We had a situation in a game last week that I am getting conflicting info and thought I would throw it out: A batter hits a soft line drive down the first base line. The ball hit the ground before getting to the base and, because of some serious spin, kicks hard left (if facing the plate) crossing the first base line. Before the ball hits the ground (after 1 bounce in fair territory), the first baseman snatches the ball out of the air. Both of his feet are in fair territory. The ball is clearing caught on the foul side of the first base line. Is the ball fair or foul?

Was the fielder in front or behind the base when he touched it

Makes no difference where the fielders feet were. The way you are explaining this, the ground ball crossed the line, then the 1st basemen caught the ball on the bounce while it was in foul territory, and 1st basemen was still in fair territory, regardless of whether it actually hit the ground a second time in foul territory? Makes no difference if 1st basemen was in fair or foul territory, only where the ball was. That would make this a foul ball IMO.

Doesn't matter if the player was in fair territory, its where he made contact with the ball. If ball was in foul territory and he touched it, it is a foul ball.

Not enough information to determine the answer. Has the ball passed 1st base or is it still in front of the bag when it is contacted? If it is in front of the bag, it is a foul ball if a player contacts the ball while the ball is in foul territory (it doesn't matter about his feet). If it is has passed the base then it would depend on whether or not the ball crossed over the base in foul or fair territory.

It’s fair if the ball crossed the line passed the base. It’s foul if it crossed the line before the base.

Rereading I assume we must be discussing the case where the contact is in front of 1st base and the question is whether or not the ball becomes foul in mid-air before it strikes the ground in foul territory. In that case:

Definition from MLB rules: FOUL TERRITORY is that part of the playing field outside the
first and third base lines extended to the fence and perpendicularly
upwards.

It does not matter that the ball has not yet hit the ground in foul territory, it becomes foul by breaking the plane perpendicularly upwards from the foul line. But it does make it a judgment call for the umpire if it is nearly on the foul line to tell if it has made it into foul territory or not.

The opening poster said that "The ball hit the ground before getting to the base," so the following is correct:

Basically, if the ball hits the ground before the base, then all that matters is where the ball is when it passes the base. If it goes over top of (or inside) the base, it's fair. If the ball is in foul territory when it passes the base, it is foul. It does not matter where the ball lands, when somebody makes contact with the ball, or where their feet are, etc.

Had the ball not touched the ground, that's a different story. If a defender touches the ball in the air before it has touched the ground, you have to worry about all that stuff. Besides, the same rules apply whether the ball is touched in the air before or after the base.

Foul Ball

The position of the fielder is irrelevant whether or not it hit the ground in this situation

If the first basemen touched it in foul territory before it got to the bag, it's foul by far all day end of discussion!
