Northern Lakes League 2017

Since I haven't seen a thread on the league I guess I'll get the conversation going. How does everyone think the league will be? A few teams have beefed up their OC schedules which will in my opinion prepare them for league play.

P-Burg I think is just back to where they were the year previous? The other two made a step, but not a HUGE step. Springfiled definitely needed a game against someone used to playing good teams. Clyde is solid. Columbian up and down, no?

I would have stayed playing a soft schedule and made the playoffs every year, but that's me

Perrysburg didn't start making the playoffs consistently until they scheduled Whitmer and Toledo Central Catholic

That is true, and I agree there is something to be said about challenging your guys and getting them ready for a stiffer competition in the playoffs, but how much of that was having 2 all state QBs in a row, as well as a lot of other talent. PB is a different program now, not sure they "need" to schedule TRAC teams. Its a balancing act IMO.

TRAC teams aren't what they were. It's a good schedule for a team without two all-state QBs and a lot of other talent.

Who else they going to schedule if they don't want to win 40- 7?

Whats wrong with winning 40 - 7?? Kids are happy, parents are happy, kids stay fresh, down the liners get early game reps. Why bang your head against SJ and Whitmer, if you don't need to, even if they aren't what they once were.

But I agree, its not an overwhelming schedule by any means. Pretty solid for most of the schools.

You think so? No they're not. They want their kids to grow, be challenged. If the world were as you seem to think is desired, there would be no TRAC. The parents want them to "bang their heads" against the best teams with which they can be competitive. That would include SJJ and Whitmer and CCHS. They've shown that. Now they need to see if they can still show that with their former D coach now at AW.

I'm surprised TRAC hasn't scheduled Saline. If a coach wants to get a good measure of his individuals and their team work and their coach work, they'd want to play against a team balanced and knowledgeable at every position that wins because of that, not because it has recruited a bevy of D1 recruits. Saline has shown, they are that team. They might have a few recruits, some out of district transfers, I don't know. But they're not playing with a bunch of D1 college recruits so the success would seem to be in the teaching and coaching.

Honestly they got Millington (MI). I did hear they were in talks with Loudonville. But they would probably take anyone willing to play which may not be smart

A. Palka doesn't need the TRAC to schedule. They play 9 game schedules in Michigan and Saline has a solid schedule in league let alone out of league and with the buzz saw in the playoffs.

B. This is an NLL thread the TRAC thread is further down the page

The usual for SV is no one around Toledo is willing to play them because of their success. But as of recently SV doesn't want to play a Catholic school because if you lose you probably lose future students. So why not pick up a small school from Michigan? The mentality is a D2 from Ohio will beat a D4 or smaller every time. They will probably find out this year it isn't always true.

As far as Perrysburg is concerned, I could see them getting back to the playoffs again this year. They have a lot of talent returning that got significant playing time last year. The team started to do better once they put the Freshman Sims in at QB1 after Backus got injured. I could see Backus moving to WR this year since Pburg lost a bit of receiver depth and since Backus played some WR 2 years ago. The scary thing to other teams in the NLL could be the fact that Kregel played a ridiculous amount of sophomores last year, more than any year I can remember. Even from the team two years ago that went to state, I don't remember anyone other than Westfall getting much playing time as a sophomore. And if they play the freshman from last year at QB this year an undefeated season won't be out of the question based on the way the past seasons under Kregel have worked. The biggest question left in my opinion is what they might have lost when their old D coordinator Brungard left for AW.

I doubt very much an undefeated season is in the cards this year, much less playoffs. Have heard there will be other freshman on varsity this year, but don't know which. Overall, still a younger bunch of guys. Brungard GREATLY missed, from my observations last season. Kudos to him for the work he's done in AW, changing that culture. I expect him to continue to do well there.

Anthony Wayne and Springfield both probably lose the most from last season. I expect both to rebound pretty well but the talent level will be a little down. BG has put together three straight good seasons so I find it hard to bet against them but they will lose their top couple players again. I expect Perrysburg to be better because they were young last year and sims is very good but they don't have any athletes like they have had the last 4 years to break the big plays and their running game lacks a playmaking back too. Maumee returns about 8 players on both sides of the ball, hearing rumors the offense will be changed again this year, i think it's safe to assume it will be run heavy but more diverse than it was at the end of last season. If they're going to be successful this is the year. Napoleon struggled moving the ball last year but continues to play tough D, interested to see if they'll be changing offenses this year. In my opinion the sylvania schools are in the worst shape heading into the season, I know NV has some big young guys but they've had a lot of big players come through the last 5 years and haven't been able to break through. SV 0-7 (14 straight in the league) seems imminent

The downward spiral will continue at Southview until some changes are made. The team is in dire need of new and fresh leadership.

With southview building a new stadium and northview renovating theirs, I would disagree with this statement. It seems that combining into one school would make too much sense

That will never happen. Not in any of our lifetimes.
