D-III Region 9 Semifinal - #1 Canfield Cardinals (10-1) Vs #5 East Orientals (9-2)

Canfield is coming off of a 35-10 victory over Marlington in the first round, while East defeated Chardon 39-28, a team that Canfield easily handled 35-13 in week 3. The Chardon Hill Toppers were the only common opponent this year.
Canfield has never played East as far as I can tell, this will be the first meeting.
East's key wins include: Jackson, Hoover, and Lake Catholic while their only two losses were to Dover in week 4 (20-24) and to Buchtel in week 10 (12-28).
Canfield's lone loss was to the East Golden Bears, Canfield lead until about a minute to go when East went ahead 12-7 after completing several long passes. Canfield's key wins include: Louisville, Alliance, Chardon, Struthers, Boardman, and Poland Seminary. Canfield has yet to allow more than 20 points (3 TDs) in 24 consecutive games including the playoffs. Not counting a TD scored by Lakeside late in the 4th quarter (when the game was already out of hand (47-13 at the time)) against all the reserves, Canfield has not allowed more than 14 points in those 24 games.

East seems to feature alot of the same traits as their Youngstown counterpart who was the only team to defeat Canfield this year. Can East exploit Canfield's weakness to end their season or will Canfield's defense be up to the task?

If it is in Salem it favors Canfield, while pretty much any other possible site favors East, unless the have it at say Boardman, Fitch or Harding.

Ironically Marlington would be an ideal host site for this game...about 30 min from both schools...don’t know if they put in for games or not

Wouldn’t hold the crowd.
Especially the visitor section.

How many fans do you expect East to bring?

Slippery,
you might have a point.
Marlington would hold the Canfield crowd on the home side.

Marlington played East at Marlington 2 years ago and they brought a few hundred fans. That being said not Marlington put in for a game. God forbid Marlington's AD would have to do some work. But that's a whole nother story.

East to Ravenna is 12-14 miles depending on which way you go and it only takes 15 minutes to get there.
Canfield to Ravenna is 35-40 miles again depending on which way you go and takes at least 45 minutes to get there with light traffic.

Looking at a map I do not see any really fair locations for the neutral site, Salem is only 25 minutes for Canfield but about 40 minutes for East.

Truth be told if the game was in Akron right off of a major interstate or 8, it would actually take less time for Canfield to get there than Ravenna.

I figured Ravenna for this game. They put Hubbard there every time they played SVSM. Goodluck to the Cards this week. Pulling for you.

Ravenna is a great location for this game. I expect a pretty good game between who I believe are the best 2 teams in this region, and actually if the brackets hold true and the winner of region 9 faces winner of region 10, the best 2 out of the 8 remaining in the 2 regions. Which would lead me to say the winner of this game are the favorites to get to the D3 state champ game.

Good luck to Canfield. I’ll be pulling for you guys. With no STVM and also Trotwood losing, D3 is wide open. Alter and Hartley are still lurking out there but another state title for Canfield is not out of the question. See you next August!

Fact: Marlington officially applied to the OHSAA to host a game this weekend. Marlington was not chosen as a host site.

Canfield has never won state in football, they have played for the Championship before though.

Latest weather check, going to be a cold night, but dry. Ravenna is a great stadium for this game. Can’t wait til Friday night.

From talking to people close to the program, this is about as healthy as the Cards have been, with the exception of Zaremski which is an enormous blow. I expect the Cardinals to come out and win this game.

East should win if they don’t turn the ball over, but they will so I’ll take Canfield In a close one

Both teams very athletic, fast, physical. I give Canfield the edge in playing mistake free ball. That being said I think East is a little more physical, little faster, and slightly bigger. If East takes care of the ball I think it's there's to loose. Should be maybe the most competitive game this weekend.

While that size comparison may possibly be true (I am not a zoologist) you are forgetting the size of the heart within the dog in the fight. It is amazing the OHSAA has picked this unfair site much closer to Akron East. As usual our student athletes will fight through adversity like they have faced all of their lives growing up in the blue collar town of Canfield. Corch Pav is ready to hand the keys to the Lamborghini over to Mehlyn Football and there won't be a scratch on it as the Cards slay the Dragons 79-0.
