Region 21 Semifinal: McDonald (11-0) vs Mogadore (10-1)

These old playoff rivals are set to meet once again. Mogadore has been a constant roadblock for McDonald in the playoffs and the Wildcats have never lost to the blue devils. 2 proud communities that are familiar facing each other in November.

There is 1 mutual opponent, Rootstown. Mogadore won in the rain/slop week 10 28-18. McDonald beat Rootstown 46-20 in week 11.

So here’s a quirky fact that this game was destined to happen. This is the 4th time that McDonald has been the 5 seed in the playoffs, the previous 3 times their season was ended by Mogadore:
2000 #1 Mogadore beat #5 McDonald 18-6 in week 12
2010 #2 Mogadore beat #5 McDonald 28-14 in week 13
2014 #4 Mogadore beat #5 McDonald 33-6 in week 11
2018 #1 Mogadore vs #5 McDonald

Where has this matchup been played in the past? What are the predictions for the venue this time around? You guys are usually pretty accurate on here.

2010 was in Twinsburg, 2000 was in West Branch (not an option now as its grass). My best guess is Twinsburg again, maybe Ravenna or Salem. It’ll be interesting with 2 Youngstown area vs Akron area games where they put each one (Canfield plays Akron East)

Ravenna is probably where this game will take place.
1983 — regional final — when playoff only took the top 2 in each region.
Mogadore 27 McDonald 0 — this was at Kent Roosevelt, mud bowl.
1987 — first round playoff CF Stadium( now Tom Benson)
Mogadore 35 McDonald 34 — was the toughest, craziest and most fun HS football game I ever played in.

The only thing about Ravenna is Mogadore played their tonight and they tend to not put teams in the same place, especially since it was technically a “home” game for Mogadore. The optimist in me says Salem, but realist says probably Twinsburg.

I’m just glad we’re here talking about potential locations for a blue devil week 12 game.

Mogadore doesn’t have an ultra talented group this year, but they play very hard and sound football. I don’t think that Mogadore will make a lot of mistakes and beat themselves. This should be a really good game. I think Mogadore will throw the football a lot, with McDonald being stout against the run. I think the score will be somewhat low. Maybe like 24-21, and really could go either way. Should be a great game!

I like McDonald in this one. Two fisted running game and revealed last night they can and will put the ball in the air.

Unless McD has good and tall DBs then the Mogadore passing game will win this. Their top 3 Pass catchers are all over 6’2” and fast. The one took 2nd at hurdles in the state last Spring. He is fast, can jump, and is tall.

You may be right but I was at the McDonald game last night and when I saw how a couple of Rootstown receivers towered over the McDonald DBs I was a little worried. But in the end it didn't matter.

Ravenna is definitely possible. Mogadore has played at Twinsburg on consecutive weeks in years past.

I know its cliche' but this game is going to come down to offensive and defensive line play.
Its no secret. McDonald made Springfield, Berlin Center and Rootstown try to beat them passing the ball by stuffing their run game. They didnt care how many yards you threw for they were not gonna let you run the ball. Its been a formula that has worked. I think they would welcome Mogadore to be one dimensional passing the ball.
If Mogadore has a good day running the ball and defending the run they got a great chance to win.
If McDonald takes their run game away and Cintron and Celli get it going I like McDonald's chances.

Don't think it's a possibility, but would LOVE to see this game in my backyard at South Range. Have so much respect for both of these programs, it would be great to host them here.

It will be interesting to see if the Wildcats can slow down the Devils rushing game. Like you said beaker, this game will be won in the trenches.

Remember the 1983 game. The regular season game was at McDonald and apparently no on checked their lights. Game was called I believe in 2nd quarter. Not made up. When they played at Kent, many Mogadore fans brought flashlights. They chanted " we got lights"!! Was pretty funny...but yes a muddy field.

My favorite thing about McDonald vs Mogadore threads is when this infamous lights game is brought up.

I think McDonald got to beat them a few times to make it a rivalry.
Its more like Mogadore is the Blue Devil's white whale. They can never beat those guys. I doubt Mogadore views this game the same way McDonald views it. This goes way back for Coach Williams when they nearly beat the Wildcats back in the 80's, losing 35-34.
Maybe this time Devil's Catch em!!!
How bout that literary reference?

I think it is a rivalry despite the results being one sided. My main reason is because of the amount of respect that both programs have for each other. Another reason is because they have now met in the playoffs a handful of times and the games are usually very competitive. Just like I considered Cuyahoga Heights a great playoff rival in the 2000s, even though the results were ones sided. Thirdly is the football tradition of both communities. I have been saying for years that it would be a lot of fun to make this an annual matchup in the regular season. Would be a great measuring stick game.

I hope not, of course, but it sounds like this McDonald team could break the streak. Mogadore had no trouble stopping Columbia’s star running back and making him a non-factor last week ..... but two good backs is a different story. I’m considering this a toss-up game with both teams having solid chances to win.

I agree. Toss-up game. Big turnover late in the game may be the difference.

For the Mogadore fans that have been to the past matchups, you’ll be in store for a much different blue devil offense. Mercifully gone are the days of the wing-t, with McDonald employing a spread offense this season. They are still run heavy, but like last week shown they are willing to throw the ball. Cintron and Celli both have phenomenal quickness and ability to exploit just the smallest creases for big gains. They are the 2 best runners McDonald has had in a really long time. Also can’t sleep on the athletes on the outside, Tucker, Schadl, Bucan have all made big plays this year on O.

Defensively McDonald’s run D has been a stonewall. Western Reserve led by a 1300 yard rusher and Rootstown led by a 1000 yard rusher both averaged only about 2 yards per carry. Springfield number wise had a bit more success, but that was mainly due to 1 long td run late in the game. McDonalds secondary has been prone to giving up yards and a weakness. That said, the 2 best QB’s they’ve faced (Brungard at Springfield, Steger at Rootstown) both completed well under 50% of their passes and McDonald picked them off a combined 7 times in those 2 games.

Changing to the spread was the most significant improvement bar none.
