"Varsity Head Football Coach
Versailles High School (Division V, Southwest). Our football program is in the competitive Midwest Athletic Conference. There is potential for full-time employment in the district. Interested candidates should send a resume and cover letter to the Athletic Department, attn: Scott Broerman, 280 Marker Rd, Versailles, OH 45380 or email to scott.broerman@vtigers.org. Deadline for application is Friday, December 7th, 2018. Link to full job description can be found here: https://goo.gl/72WjC6"

Well, a lot of us thought this would happen and now its official. Where can they go from here?

Candidates they would probably want: Mike Hetrick (Brookville), Tim Goodwin (duh), Steve Poff (Middletown Madison), Todd Schulte (DSJ).

I doubt they get anyone of those guys. Who I think they need is someone who runs a balanced offense and can get the most out of the talent that they have. What say you?

Not surprised.

They were on the right track a few years ago and if they hadn't run into CW in the playoffs (and their young QB getting a concussion I believe) they were a team to be reckoned with running the spread but then a new coach came in.

Hope they rebound quickly.

Hey now, I'm hearing Urban might be available once he steps down after the season. Apparently the OSU offense is causing a lot of headaches as of late.

A little bit more balanced than St Marys. Wapak's Wing-T has some Spread tendencies if I'm not mistaken. That could work in Versailles but I was thinking more like Crestview or Minster in terms of offense. More 50/50 passing and running

Wapak will go shotgun, but it is still wing-t just out of the gun. They are wing-t at heart. I would say balance of being able to pass when you need or run when you need is more important than 50/50.

Can someone help me out? Minster's recent loss to Crestview makes 2018 one of the few years in the past 20 or so that a MAC team will not play in the state title game of the smallest division.

I believe the 1998 season was the first year for 6 divisions (up from 5) so I'll start there with Div VI.

1998 DSJ
1999 DSJ
2000 ML
2001 ML
2002 Mogadore
2003 ML (runner-up to Columbus Grove)
2004 Hardin Northern?
2005 DSJ?
2006 ML
2007 Newark Catholic
2008 DSJ
2009 DSJ (runner-up to Norwalk St. Paul)
2010 DSJ
2011 ML
2012 ML

The 2013 season was the first for 7 divisions, so now we jump to D-VII.

2013 ML
2014 ML
2015 Ft. Recovery
2016 Minster (runner-up to Warren JFK)
2017 Minster

So I think the MAC's been represented in 16 of the past 20 title games (by four different schools) in the smallest division. And now it will be 16 of the past 21.

^^^ got it - so Minster won state in D-VI that year with their high-scoring narrow win over Kirtland.

I knew the Cats had won a title in '14.

Thanks for the correction - I made the update to my original.

Type I = Rural, high student poverty
Type II = Rural, Avg. student poverty
Type III = Small Town, low student poverty
Type IV = Small Town, high student poverty
Types V-VIII refer to Suburban schools and Urban schools.

Here's what the MAC schools looked like as of 2013:
Anna (football only) - $39,438, 12%, III
Minster - $38,114, 13%, III
Marion Local - $36,646, 6%, II
New Bremen - $35,822, 12%, III
St. Henry - $35,495, 10%, II
Fort Recovery - $35,037, 16%, II
Coldwater - $33,690, 15%, III
Versailles - $33,596, 11%, II
New Knoxville (no football) - $32,987, 14%, II
Parkway - $30,255, 33%, II

Last time I looked, Mercer and Auglaize Counties had 2 of the 4 lowest unemployment rates in the state.

What does Kirtland look like?
Kirtland - $42,796, 3%, V Type V is described as a suburban district with low student poverty and average student population size.

Now, compare the numbers from above to ones from a couple similar-sized leagues in East Central Ohio. You might end up asking "who are these schools?" because they generally don't do much on the football field.

First, the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference school districts:
Leetonia - $29,944, 47%, I
United - $29,856, 37%, II
Columbiana - $29,167, 35%, IV
Southern - $29,004, 56%, I
East Palestine - $28,743, 51%, I
Lisbon - $27,255, 54%, I
Toronto - $27,237, 57%, IV
Wellsville - $25,285, 64%, IV

Next, the Inter Valley Conference school districts:
Tuscarawas Valley - $33,721, 42%, III
Strasburg - $31,672, 32%, I
Conotton Valley (all sports but football) - $30,766, 51%, I
Brown (Malvern HS) - $30,395, 50%, I
Indian Valley - $29,248, 51%, I
Osnaburg (East Canton HS) - $29,225, 42%, I
Sandy Valley - $28,851, 46%, I
Ridgewood - $28,654, 52%, I
Garaway - $28,557, 33%, I
East Guernsey (Buckeye Trail HS) - $26,811, 52%, II
East Holmes (Hiland HS, no football) - $26,345, 36%, I
Newcomerstown - $24,929, 66%, I
Claymont - $24,614, 61%, I

The IVC has experienced most of its success in basketball led by Hiland and softball led by Strasburg. Garaway has a few state titles in boys golf to its name, and East Canton has also contributed 2 state titles in boys track & field and 1 in boys cross country since joining the IVC.

Map of Ohio school districts by type:
http://education.ohio.gov/getattachm...ology.pdf.aspx
I know this is old but I was thinking about this post while watching the MAC win two more state titles and having their football teams win in the playoffs while the IVC teams got blown off the field.

Here is where your argument falls short Mr. Slippery and I'll just use the two top teams in the leagues as examples.

Indian Valley has 220 boys and a 51% poverty rate. That means their "non-poverty" number of boys would be somewhere around 108.

Marion Local has 112 boys and a poverty rate of 6%. That means their "non-poverty" number of boys would be somewhere around 105.

So essentially they have the same number of "non-poverty" boys. Now, what would happen if you put these two teams on the field together on an annual basis? I think we all know the answer.

Kirtland is as MAC as you can get and prove it on the field in the playoffs, unlike Anna.

So this will probably be the 1st time since 2009 the MAC does not win a state title in football at any level.

Most of the league fared well this postseason. Minster got tripped up but I expect CV do to some serious damage and of course this matchup this weekend.

My official prediction:
Team that has the most fans dressing in carharts will come out victorious.

Those are a must but don't get the ones in the green packaging as they have like a 16.7% success rate.

But.......if you are a district with a high percentage of poverty, coaching, teachers etc may be limited, as well as funding to support athletics. For that reason, it may affect outcome.

I think it is interesting in life that XX,XXX dollars may be a very stable and comfortable income for someone living a simple country life, but is difficult to live a typical suburban life on the same income.

By the way, I don't really buy the income argument either, Indian Hill, Oakwood etc have fewer successes than Trotwood or Huber Heights. For me it is genetics, coaching, parental support and passion. Most people with parental support and passion for football come from parents that are responsible and responsibility tends to equal extra income. So while there may be a co existence between football success and family finances, one is not the result of the other.
