Concessions at games

I am working with a booster organization to revamp our game day sales. I thought I could try an informal poll on yappi.

At a PUBLIC HS, what are you favorite concession offerings? What type of swag have you purchased or would like to see available at your local HS game (spirit wear, glow, etc)? Thanks for your input.

The cheap stuff sells like crazy. Parents give the young kids a few bucks to spend to keep them out of their hair. The $1 items are irresistible.

WTF, like there is a difference for concessions at a public and private school?!?

One suggestion is to to take credit cards. Younger folks tend not to carry a lot of cash these and it is worth the % fee that the bank will charge you for the transaction. Actually quicker than cash too as many don't need a receipt and it is basically a swipe and at the most a finer signature. Also make sure if below 60 degrees that you have plenty of hot chocolate plus regular and decaf coffee, I cannot tell you how many times I have seniors walk out of game because they ran out of a hot beverage on a cold evening. Any beverage is a big margin builder too.

I think it's very well known that private schools get food from seven counties.

Our local school switched to Pepsi within the last 10 years. Guess I have brand name snobbery when it comes to Coca-Cola ( for some reason it makes a difference in the way I enjoy the food ). I usually get cheeseburgers at JV and junior high football but, order pizza on Friday nights. Always have M&Ms at basketball games for some reason.

I would consider a golf shirt or sweatshirt once in awhile.

I would like to see concessionaires walk the isles at halftime or other select times. Just think of the young families or senior citizens saving them from climbing out then back into the seats. I would defiantly buy if food or drinks were brought to me for the simple fact I don’t want to miss any of the game and I do enjoy the halftime show.

I'll get two boxes of popcorn and a Gatorade at the games when the weather is still mild and a couple hotdogs and Gatorade when it cools down. Cost will 3 to 5 bucks. I'll give them a 10 and tell them to keep the change for the booster club.

Many schools in my neck of the woods does a deal with chic fil a for sandwiches. School sells them for 3.50. Usually sold out by half.

Don't skimp on the hot dogs. Get all beef if it's only a $.15 difference in cost. You will sell more hot dogs to make up the difference.

All-beef dogs are tasty. If you do sell all-beef and decide to charge more for it, make sure to publicize the fact that it's an all-beef dog. People often complain about the price of hot dogs at my school, but it's also not mentioned anywhere that it's an all-beef dog they'd be buying.

Another good move is a nacho cheese dog. Basically just give the customer one of those plastic 1 oz. containers full of cheese and charge an extra 50 cents for it.

Other smaller candy items can be a hit with the grade school kids. Things like Airheads and Smart Pops that you can sell 3 or 4 for $1 and still make money.

Also, what about some hand warmers and body warmers in colder weather? If it's cold enough, some folks would gladly part with $1 for a pair of hand warmers or a body warmer. If they don't sell during the fall sports season, they might sell during the early part of the spring sports season. I've attended my fair share of very cold lacrosse games and track meets.

Any way to offer something that would be unique, like a food item that can't easily be had elsewhere? Many concession stands have that 1 signature item for which they can justify charging a little more money than what it would cost to get that same type of item elsewhere. One example would be food items provided by local restaurants rather than fast food or pizza chains.

That path isn't technically available to anyone. Alcohol is not permitted at OHSAA sanctioned events - not that some people don't smuggle their own into games.

My high school had concesionaires go into the stands to sell things like hot chocolate, ice cold bottle water candy bars, popcorn, etc when I was in school. Stopped doing it sometime between the 90s and now. Especially if lines are long, that can help induce people who otherwise wouldn't spend.

Secondly, make some type of signature item. Ribeye sandwich, halusky, sausage rolls, etc. Something that can be advertised over the usual things you'd find. If you're going to do burgers or cheeseburgers, make them right. Melted cheese while still cooking them, etc. Not a cold slab of cheese on a lukewarm patty. You can taste the disappointment.

$1 items are a must. Sheet pizza sold by the slice if they're small slices for $1 can mean buying more than one and you've now induced people into buying more or paying more than originally thought (think sliders in how people buy them by the bag compared to the price of a regular burger elsewhere).

Make sure your drinks are ice cold. People know if you're just throwing cans or bottles into a cooler only to sell them instantly. Less repeat sales. I'd use actual ice water (with salt) to get truly ice cold cans or bottles. On a hot night that sells compared to drinks that warm up instantly.

I think this is more for playoff host sites as it usually doesn't get that cold in the regular season, but there are a bunch of times where i would've paid a premium at the concession stand for a hand warmer.

See me about serving Zunardo's Famous Chili. You'll have to come to my house to pick it up, but your fans will love you for it. The wife thinks I'm ready to set up a food truck during the fall festivals.

Our boosters concession stand (home side) focuses on the main staples, like shredded chicken sandwiches and french fries. Nothing fancy. It's not high cuisine, but it's convenient, consistent and hot, and they sell a lot of it.

Our band parents concession (visitors side) does lemon shake-ups, grilled brats - and they do a great business selling different homemade soups the last few weeks in cooler weather. Zunardo's Chili (of course), chicken noodle, broccoli cheese, vegetable beef - and they'll usually sell out of all of them.
