Lawniczak Has never made scratch @ 170. Therefore he was was a 182.
Give the kid credit giving up 20lbs. Great match , great environment
West Branch just out wrestled Carrollton.

Years ago I did the same thing reported myself to OHSAA about bumping a kid too many weights, I didn't realize it till after the dual it wouldn't have changed the results but it didn't sit well with me. They said because the opposing coach did not catch it that it was not a issue but my kid did lose the right to wrestle at a lower weight. You can only bump up one weight class from weigh ins.

If the opposing coach does not catch it in 24 hours or right after the dual it would not change things.

Not taking anything away from Lawniczak He wrestled tough. Iím more concerned with a Coach, whose number one job is the safety of his athletes, making a mistake or intentionally cheating. Once the growth allowance is granted, it is figured into the max weight u can go...so in order to wrestle 195 after December 25th a wrestler must weigh 172.1. Itís a safety rule. Whether or not he made scratch at 170 is irrelevant.

What is the rule here? I had the same issue a couple years ago. My kid weighed 171 for the sake of argument, had never made scratch so he couldn't wrestle 170. I was told he couldn't bump to 195 because he was a 170 pounder but just not eligible to wrestle 170.

Personally I get why the rule is there, and see both sides to the argument.

by whom mrroosevelt the team that followed the rules , or the team that didnt? the wrestler not making scratch has zero bearing on the rule.

I've been around a loooong time, and I must admit.....I'm not 100% sure if a wrestler who has not yet made scratch at 170 and weighs in at (hypothetically) 170.5 becomes a 182 pounder for the purposes of bumping in a duel meet. I suspect that it does. If so......the move is within the rules. Two things I am very sure of though.... 1. A good coach would NEVER do this unless he had a crystal clear rule interpretation from OHSAA. 2. There will be some calls/e-mails to Mr. Brooks today.

good answer mrroosevelt, I believe after dec 25th it changes 170 to 172 in this case, why else would a wrestler have to be 217 after 25 dec to wrestle Heavyweight instead of 215. I think WB made a mistake. Just my thoughts

Have to make scratch weight first, so the 217 is only after 215 has been made once.

West Branch got clarification today & as stated Since he never made scratch he was considered a 182 #er & can go up another class. ( no wrestler can use a growth allowance to wrestle at a weight for the first time. Ohsaa F-3).

Great match last night between Minerva and Marlington. Several very exciting matches with big swings in momentum. Large crowd helped create a great atmosphere. Congrats to the Lions on the win.
