Red Sox stole signs electronically against Yankees

Quote:
The Red Sox have admitted that they used electronic communication to steal opponents' signs and relay them to Boston players during games, according to the New York Times.

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman filed a complaint with Major League Baseball last month. He supplied video of what the team contended was a Red Sox trainer looking at his Apple Watch and then relaying information to players -- in one instance outfielder Brock Holt and in another infielder Dustin Pedroia -- during a series between the teams in Boston.

Baseball's inquiry into the matter began about two weeks ago, The Times reported.

Nice to hear Belichick finds ways to mix it up during the preseason.

Probably not unique to the Red Sox, but they were the ones that were dumb enough to get caught.

Too bad it wasn't Detroit. They always moaned lame accusations about stealing signs every time the Tribe whomped on Verlander.

Is "stealing" signs all that bad? If you're going to use signs so out in the open you can't just expect everyone to look away and act like they don't exist, right? Isn't everyone in football aware of the opposing teams signs? Just curious because I've never really thought about it before.

Apparently you're allowed to steal signs, even though it's against baseball's "unwritten rules" the only thing actually banned is using technology to steal them.

Yep. They pretty much all come down to "you shouldn't do this thing that gives you a better chance to win." i.e. Sabathia getting angry that guys were bunting in the 1st inning when he had a hurt ankle.

Stealing signs isn't the issue here, it's that the Red Sox used a smart watch to do it instead of just having the guys in the bullpen or whatever steal the signs themselves. Even Rob Manfred said that if I'm not mistaken.

Correct. Stealing signs is perfectly legal as long as you do not use electronics. Sign stealing goes all the way back into the late 1890's.

Yup - classic dugout conversations......sometimes we would call out our batters number, "C'mon, 2-3!!" if he was getting the deuce, or warn our catcher via signs or verbal cues if a steal or bunt was on. Something nefarious was often afoot.....

Right. Rules of engagement change with the times.

Like kicking a guy in the junk in a schoolyard fight. Old days, it would seldom happen. Now, kids get shot.

Do you think kicking a school yard bully in the junk should be off limits?

You are the first one to say, "bully", you self-proclaimed interwebz "urban badazz", and as such are changing the topic.

I was talking about a couple of kids with a difference of opinion - chronic or random.

So you aren't going to answer the question, you're going to throw a hissy fit because I asked about a specific type of school yard fight? Are you menstrating again?
