It's looking like there's a pretty decent chance this trade is getting voided unless there's some additional compensation pitched in. Yikes.

I don't hope that at all if he's got another year in him. I see him as the least significant piece in the trade.

I'd have to think the Cavs are looking for another pick or to "upgrade" from Zizic by getting Brown or Tatum instead, which there's no way the Celtics would do IMO. I'd think a salary dump by Cleveland (i.e Shumpert?) would be out of the picture as well.

The real question I guess is if Thomas' hip is much worse than thought, or if Altman, Gilbert and co. feel they have Ainge over a barrel and they want to see how far they can go.

If the Celtics are smart, they offer nothing additional.

Then they don't get Kyrie, and are stuck with a hurt IT.

The Cavs, however, are then stuck with a selfish Kyrie, and other potential trade partners will have them over a barrel.

I tend to believe the Cavs must think he needs surgery or will be out much longer than they expected. The Celtics in logic shouldn't offer more, but if this falls through they have to figure out how to mend things with Thomas and Crowder. Cleveland may have to bring Irving to camp and have to deal with that circus for part of the season. I'd think both sides would be pretty motivated to make sure this goes through.

As long as it's "partners", not "partner", I think they'll be fine. I think Ainge knows that as well. He wanted Kyrie, and if IT is proven to be damaged goods, that doesn't change.

A year of IT is the thing that makes waiting to actually use the draft pick possible. No way I bank on DRose surviving a full season. I'd be willing to take the PG tandem into the playoffs for one year if I was Gilbert and Altman, though, as long as Rose is used sparingly through the season. Let IT make regular season highlights, and give Rose one more chance to be who he could have been if healthy.

I think Cleveland has the leverage here. They already know Kyrie is unhappy, but he's under contract for 2 more years and they don't have to even play particularly well in the regular season. All that matters is if they have either figured out how to coexist by the playoffs, or if they've traded him by then.

Boston on the other hand passed up the chance to draft Fultz under the assumption they had a franchise point guard. They've now burned bridges with Thomas(and Crowder) and his injury is apparently worse than anyone thought.

If I'm Cleveland I ask for the Philadelphia/Sacramento pick or walk. They're not in a position where they have to have their roster set in October.

You see IT as less significant than Crowder and Zizic?

Would be near impossible. The Celtics don't have a lot of mid-level salary guys IIRC. A lot of high salary (Horford and Hayward) then a bunch of >$6m guys.

Look, neither side wants this trade reversed. Unhappy Kyrie in CLE, Isaiah hurt and Crowder feeling betrayed in BOS.

This will get done or stay as is. My gut says Boston throws in another draft pick (2nd rounder maybe). No way they part with another actual player.

I was kind of thinking they were thin on mid-level vets at this point. I'd have to think anything other than additional pick considerations would be tough to manuever without adding a 3rd team.

There's mixed reports out there over whether or not additional assets have been inquired about, but supposedly the range is the Cavs asking for BOTH Tatum and Brown lol, with the C's being willing to part with a 2nd rounder. Come Thursday I feel like that Grizzlies' 1st rounder will be an agreeable middle ground.

No reason for the Cavs to bring in another mid-level kind of player...we already have 17 guys rostered for next season...and can only keep 15. Draft picks are preferred, because the Celts obviously won't part with Tatum or Brown.

Kyrie comes back. Cavs win the championship. LeBron signs elsewhere. The firesale begins after the season.

Trade is official. Glad it went through. Kind of dumb to jeopardize it for an additional second rounder but in the end Altman got everything he wanted out of Boston. Nicely done by Koby.

IF Thomas comes back fully healthy, I think this leaves the Cavs a slightly better team right now, and much better off for a future rebuild

The only thing I'd say about the notion of this making the Cavs better is that now LeBron is really the only offensive finisher when the clock is winding down, or the team needs one bucket. That's a responsibility he has not had to take on alone in quite a long time.

Thomas was actually pretty good on his own in late game situations last year. I don't think anyone can match Kyrie in terms of 1-on-1 skills but a healthy Isaiah isn't the worst replacement.

Plus it kind of looks like they'll get Wade in a buyout. Not the same guy as a few years ago, but still capable of scoring on his own

I phrased that poorly.

I think Crowder will do more for the Cavs in the playoffs than IT. I see IT as a one-year stop-gap or a further trade piece. He'll be an overpriced regular season highlight-maker that will be near useless against quality teams when everyone on the floor is giving max effort. Zizic may turn into a player of higher value eventually, but he's not there now at any price.

IT's almost 30. He's a little black smurf that can't afford to be one tick slower. One year.

The Cavs still have to be the odds on favorite in the East if Thomas is full go by the playoffs, Wade or no Wade. Boston bled themselves of their depth this off-season to add two stars, and they also got worse defensively on the perimeter. The only difference between this year and last year is that it'll probably be Cavs in six instead of in five in the conference finals.

Who will? Boston? .... How new parts do they have, something like 2/3 of the team.
