Aretha Franklin

Not looking good for arguably the best female singer of the 20th Century: https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/13/enter...ill/index.html

Ms. Franklin was also one heck of a piano player too and always performed her own parts in live shows. Truly a once in a generational talent.

I would have to say behind Lady Gaga, Aretha is right up there . I would say her and PINK are very comparable ,soulful . I would also put Amy Winehouse ahead of Reetha

I saw Aretha live when I drunkenly stumbled into one of the Carter inauguration balls in 1977. I said to the person next to me that that singer is doing a great Aretha impression. He repled, "That is the real Aretha."

You've got to be kidding. Lady Gaga and Pink? Aretha Franklin has a powerful and soulful voice. Julie Andrews had a better voice from a technical and range standpoint but was missing the shear power and soul of Aretha. Carol King probably had a greater impact on 20th century popular music due to her writing of so many hit records but certainly not as a performer. Ella Fitzgerald is certainly up there with Aretha. So is Billie Holiday. Some of the forties "girl singers" were also good like Rosemarie Clooney and Doris Day, but they lacked the power and range. Whitney Houston also had the chops, still powerful but was a bit more delicate and subtle.

Aretha is the full package however and will be long remembered by people who know more about culture than what has happened in the last ten years.

Her turn in Blues Brothers (1980) was pure joy:
