Faith of our Fathers.

4 of 8. Hokey acting/dialogue. A somewhat touching story but overall not the greatest..would probably not watch again.

Straight Outta Compton- 8/8

Best movie I've seen thus far in 2016. It was remarkable how much the actors looked like the real life people. Ice Cubes son was pretty much identical. It was a very entertaining movie and there was never a period throughout, where it was boring.

Saw that when it came out. For those who lived in that era it really brought back the memories! Good movie!

Jessabelle (2014)

Horror: After a tragic accident Jessabelle moves in with her father in Louisiana where she discovers video tapes of her deceased mother when she was pregnant with her. Her mom was a bit freaky and this spooked her... and now there seems to be some spirit roaming around... 5.0/8

The Hearse (1980)

Horror: Jane decides to get away and go stay at her aunts house who passed away 30 years ago. The house has been vacant ever since in this small town. Well, the townies are not too kind to her and there is this hearse that follows her around trying to run her off the road. Good ole early 80's spook.... 4.0/8

China Seas (1935)

I watched this because I like Clark Gable and I like Jean Harlow and I love Clark Gable and Jean Harlow together. With that said, the story line was ridiculous.

Gable and Harlow together 6/8
Plot 2/8

Movie overall 4/8

The Martian 8/8: Felt like I was back in a room of really smart people and not just the science and math bits but how they understood each other without forcing the explanations down the throats of the viewer. A small example, near the end at JPL, Glover's character peeked in and was invited into the room with the others. He deferred. There's a lot in that little bit of performance. Most of the movie was that.

My only quibble was not clearing the blast-off radius under the MAV. I suppose that was done to make the take-off more spectacular but that's not something that would have been over-looked.

Z for Zachariah: 4.5/8

Read the book in high school and enjoyed it quite a bit. The movie makes quite a few changes. Supremely well acted, but they made the story a little bland and I can see why it didn't end up getting a wide release. The book has a sci-fi bent to it whereas the movie focuses more on a love triangle than the sci-fi element.

The Intern: 5.5/8

Ended up being very enjoyable. there's a subplot I didn't know about that is used to fuel the macguffin, but it also weighs down the plot a tiny bit. I think the point of the movie could have been achieved without it.

The Revenant- 7.5/8. Simply awesome, the Oscars deserve a boycott if they stiff DiCaprio this year.

Anarchy Parlor (2015)

Horror: Friends decide to vacation in Lithuania and end up at a party. They get separated and by morning 2 have gone missing and were last seen going to a tattoo parlor. Not much to like here... 1.5/8

The Unseen (1980)

Horror: 3 female free lance reporters head to a small towns festival to get a story but find that all the hotels are packed. They run into an old man that owns a museum who offers them room and board. Well, there just happens to be a creature that lives in the cellar.... decent 80's horror!!!! ... 5.0/8

Martian 8\8 excellent made you think

Straight outa Compton 7/8 very entertaining, amazing how much the actors resmbled the true character. Just a tad long

Bridge of spies 6/8 a little slow but anything with Hanks and Spielberg is good

Just watched both of those and pretty much my take also. What I liked about BoS, how many people there probably are out there like that guy that never make the history books. You could wrap a whole "what if" series out of what if he'd not been successful in E. Germany or in Cuba.

And I suspect "Science the ... out of it" posters are probably hanging in Science classes all over the country by now.

True, makes you wonder, in the nuclear age, how many near misses we have had that guys like this have negotiated us out of.

Got some good ratings and being open, I liked it. Wasn't to your taste or you thought it not well made? Both?

I am not really into the big budget CGI movies. My problem with it is that I could really care less about anybody in the movie. It reminded me of when I use to play video games. It did not matter if I died as I could just start over again.... Maybe if the movie would of gave us about 30 minutes of character development and more about the initial invasion instead of throwing us in the middle of it. I also had a huge problem with the day starting over again concept. Was it just there or everywhere, everywhere in the universe... I mean, come on...

Taking Lives (2004)

Crime/horror: A serial killer takes the identity of those he kills as a female detective closes in. Started out better than it finish and of course the theatrical version is stripped of the gruesome elevator scene.... 5.0/8

Thank You For Smoking-

Had seen this in college and liked it. Was on TV the other day so my lady and I watched it together. JK Simmons is awesome. I actually still like the movie quite a bit, despite the inability of Katie Holmes to act her way out of a paper bag.

Solid 6/8 for good, entertaining dialogue

Yi boh lai beng duk (Hong Kong - 1996)

Horror: Ebola Syndrome: Kai is not the best of people and he is down on his luck and he suffers from being horny. When he is bullied he can become extremely violent. Kai had a bad day and now has to leave Hong Kong as you see he kind of murdered 3 people and he finds his way to South Africa where he works at a restaurant. While buying cheap meat at the Zulu tribe he becomes infected with Ebola. Saw this uncut and it gets a bit gory at times and it has all the good nasties in it. Kind of a dark comedy in a sick twisted way... 5.5/8

I have not been able to get to the theater laterly, and it might seem like an odd choice but, I watched General Spanky (1936) last night. It was a feature length picture showcasing the "Our Gang" crowd. The weird thing about it was that Buckwheat had gotten lost and spent a good part of the film looking for a new master.

The chemistry among the "Our Gang" kids was very evident. There had to be some true friendships there. The relationship between Spanky's character and Buckwheat was especially heartwarming.

The "Our Gang" kids were fun to watch, especially when they were defending the women and children from the Yankees. There were not many bad guys. Most of the slave masters were nice, most of the soldiers on both sides were nice. The only real villains were a martinet of a Union officer and a card cheat from the riverboat. Everyone else is depicted as well meaning and decent people caught up in a bad situation. The warmongers among the Southerns are depicted as simply being misguided. This all makes sense if you keep in mind that, when this was filmed, there would still be a large number of Civil War veterans from both sides in the audience.

Kinda fun to watch 4/8.

DeadPool: 6.5/8

Superbly funny and a great action flick. The 4th Wall moments worked seamlessly (and includes a great scene at the very end credits).

My only major complaint would be that it was almost a victim of its own success. The movie itself is not told in a linear timeline. The movie starts about 2/3rds through the story chronologically and every now and then cuts back to flashbacks to fill in the story. It's done well though and not awkward. My complaint, and this is more of a personal preference complaint, was that the stuff in the present was so awesome and so great, that I found myself during the flashbacks going "alright, let's get back to him in the suit!" The flashback scenes aren't bad by any means, they do a very effective job, they are however more drama filled than the present which is straight action and outrageous comedy.

The movie itself pulls no punches with action and comedy. It's superbly funny with plenty of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman related jokes, and the action is full of blood and gore.
