Stephen Hawking has passed away

Quote:
Stephen Hawking, the brightest star in the firmament of science, whose insights shaped modern cosmology and inspired global audiences in the millions, has died aged 76.

His family released a statement in the early hours of Wednesday morning confirming his death at his home in Cambridge.

Hawking’s children, Lucy, Robert and Tim said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today.

“He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years.

“His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.

“He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him for ever.”

For fellow scientists and loved ones, it was Hawking’s intuition and wicked sense of humour that marked him out as much as the broken body and synthetic voice that came to symbolise the unbounded possibilities of the human mind.

Wow! Another major figure in his field to pass away in such a short time (Billy Graham the other).

I didn't realize that he was that old. He definitely captivated the scientific community for decades.

Arguably the most brilliant mind since Einstein.

Not sure I'd say Hawking and Graham were in the same "field."

Global impact perhaps, not same field.

Some would say it is the same "field," depending upon how you unify your fields. On PI day to boot.

Uh.....did I miss something along the road here ? Cold fusion ? Room temperature super-conductor ? Revolutionary space craft drive ? Keys to "wormhole time travel" ?

RIP, sure. Why should I view this guy as any more than just another geek in the world of theoretical physics ? If the poor guy wasn't rolling around all crumpled up, who would have noticed him ?

Thoughts and prayers, I guess...

Stephen Hawking changed how we understand the universe we live in. That's a more significant contribution than most people.

Geez man I think his body is still warm.

I did laugh my arse off when he appeared on The Simpsons and Homer mistook him as Larry Flynt.

He was also the subject of one of the best lines ever on Modern Family when Jay, referring to Manny's training wheels equipped bike, stated "Stephen Hawking could ride that bike."

Very smart guy but some in the media that don't particularly care for religion held this guy up to a religious type level, an almost cult like following emerged. Also in a cult like manner he had a bad track record when it came to his relationships with women.

OK, I guess, but can you tell me an idea that was his alone that has been empirically proven or borne fruit in a technological advancement ? Just asking.

He's a theoretical physicist. His ideas will be tested for a very long time, especially concerning black holes, gravity, and time. Pretty dumb questions to be asking here, honestly.

So, exactly what I said, just add in that you a theoretical physics circle-jerk fan-boy. Got it.

Is it really a surprise to anyone that a homeschooler doesn't care for science? Thought that was pretty common knowledge. Can't be a member of Jesus' Army if you start learning about how the world actually works.
