True story:
When I was a sophomore in high school, I read all about Tanski and Harper. Those two were the real deal back then. I actually got both players' autographs. I'm not surprised to see Tanski inducted into the News Herald Hall of Fame. He's a great player.

Hopefully, Mitch will have some time before NFL training camp to spend some time with Tatarunas at practice -- sure he could help him tremendously.

Tatarunas will be a three-year starter. Good for him that he has hopes to have his college education paid for at the next level (DII, FCS, or maybe mid-major if he really shines). He has the size, strength, and potential to be crafted into some kind of a college QB. But with the way Mentor runs their offense, it is hard to ignore that he is a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. It's strange to me that Tatarunas can look pretty athletic and mobile on the basketball court playing against great athletes from Solon, Shaker, St Eds, Cornerstone, etc. On the football field, he has trouble standing out athletically as he runs away from 270-pound defensive lineman.
The key is to get the 7 wins necessary to make the playoffs. Going 2-1 in non-conference will take some of the pressure off during the GCC. But that won't be an easy task. Ignatius is a juggernaut. Massillon and Glenville are more winnable, but not if Mentor plays like they did in big games last year.
The player I'm most excited to see growth this year is Potter. He is on OSU's radar. His summer camp schedule and his fall season will be a great place for him to show his skills, size, and athletic ability.
|
I think that Tatarunas' only offer is currently Robert Morris, which I believe is a D-I subdivision. Not sure if they pay 100%. All of the MAC schools have already gotten their QB commits for 2018. Hopefully, Tadarunas shines this year and gets a legitimate D-I offer.

I am hoping that the coaching staff keeps the offense that they used the last half of the year -- allowing Tatarunas to be a drop back passer. At the beginning of last year, they tried to make him roll out and make plays with his legs. Hopefully, they have learned that Tatarunas is not Trubisky or Krizancic. Who is the leading candidate at RB? A good RB will take pressure off of the QB. I am hoping that the next RB is at least close to as good as last year, as a 5-WR set doesn't make sense for Tatarunas.

Chris Edmond had 19 carries for 113 yards last season as the one back returning with some varsity experience. I know that Nick Saginario is undersized, but will he be in the mix at RB? He might be better served as a receiver to get the ball in space.

I'd keep an eye on a couple of sophomores. Justin Luke is very fast and shifty. They have a slot receiver in that class who is also very good and could easily slide over to RB or be utilized on Jet Sweeps. They just need the RB position to keep defenses honest.

Good article on Bart Tanski and Mitch Trubisky reuniting at the Senior Bowl at Mentor last night. Was a cool moment
Tanski was inducted into the News Herald hall of fame at halftime

Nice article. As a Bears fan, I'm hoping Tribs can have a long career in Chicago.

Returning starters on offense: QB Tatarunas, WR Baird, WR Shea, P (and part-time WR) Kleinhenz and back from injury C Schonaur (starter as a sophomore and injury mid-year, never played as a junior and had knee surgery)
Defense: CB LaGanke (1 &1/2 years), S Brey, DL Skelley, DE Potter
Any others to watch this year?

Pretty much the most perfect schedule for us. I'd like to play Euclid or Solon in week 10 instead of Elyria. That's the only thing I'd change
Scrimmages are kenston and a few others at kenston. Away vs Massillon Jackson. Then home vs Erie cathedral prep

Looking at the schedule, is Mentor capable of winning 7 or 8 games and getting into the playoffs? When it was two super regions, it was less difficult to get in.

Schedule is good especially with the GCC improving. If they can't win 7 though , they probably don't deserve the playoffs

Has Mentor been playing 7-on-7? If so, how do they look?

I would love to see the week 2 game vs Ignatius be another 65-58 down to end type of game. That was an awesome game!

Not sure if we have the firepower on offense or the defense to matchup with all of St. Ignatius' recruits. In a News Herald article, Triv said he only has three FBS recruits in QB Tadas Tatarunas, along with juniors LT Ryan Jacoby and DE Noah Potter.

Ouch. Are you thinking blowout? Should I be looking for a better game that week?

I hope not! Mentor's O-line is supposed to be good. Not sure who the RB will be. The WRs have experience. Just get there early. We lost all of the grass parking to a medical rehab center. Many fans could be stuck parking behind the high school.

I see that Jacoby has an offer from Bowling Green and Iowa State. Potter has many of the MAC schools, Iowa State, and Boston College, with Big Ten offers probably to follow. Tatarunas' father said a shoulder injury to Tadas forced him to miss all of the QB camps this summer that were opportunities for scholarship offers.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the parking situation.

In 2014 should it really say regional runner up ? I mean Mentor got to the round of 8 but with two regions the final 4 decided the regional runner up (Hudson )

Technically, you are right. With only two regions in DI, Mentor was not runner-up. I can see the other side of that though. Is it really fair that DI would technically only have two regional champs (and thus two regional runner-ups) during that stretch while the other divisions all had four? Mentor won two playoff games that year, which normally makes you a regional final team
In the old (and now present) system, it is very likely Mentor would have been a regional runner-up in 2014 to St Eds.

In 2013, Mentor beat St Edward for the regional championship and to go to states.

You'd have to make both Eds and Hudson regional champs on that site then too. And it was the same region
I know round of 8 is usually a regional appearance. Just saying in that system it wasn't the title game so you can't be runner up

Mentor does put past records and coaches into their programs every year. I will try to find one and update the Wiki.
