Yay, more ties!

As someone who loves ties in football, I'm very happy about the NFL shortening overtime to ten minutes to allow for more ties. Hope we see a record number of ties this year.

What is the possible logic behind not copying the college OT format except starting the possessions at the 40 or something? Who wouldn't prefer that to the current NFL OT rules?

Yup, and I still don't. Almost every tie is due to both teams missing several opportunities to win the game (Bengals vs Skins for example), or both teams punt continuously throughout overtime which is boring as hell. Therefore a tie is a great way to end the game. I get a kick out of people who vehemently hate ties for some reason.

While that produces some exciting high scoring I am not a fan of OT that eliminates too much of the game.

I don't think it will have a big increase in ties. Teams will be forced to make more urgent moves at the end of regulation./

I project maybe one more T per season but I agree...ties suck.

We went to the steelers/falcons tie. Awful. I spend that much $$/time invested I want a freaking result, win or lose.

Actually, the final year of NFL play before sudden death OT began had 7 ties. At least I heard that on the radio yesterday.

What part of the game is being eliminated? The kick off? A play that results in a touchback nearly every time anyway?

Punt also ... but I get your point and agree.

This change will have less than 1% effect on the game.

What I find interesting is that if you ask most players, I'll bet they will tell you they hate ties and want to continue playing through to a winner.

In the same breath, the NFLPA supports "player safety", which this reduction in OT is supposed to benefit.

So what do the players really want? A win/loss, or increased safety?

I agree with Sig that ties don't bother me. Always cracked me up listening to Greenberg vehemently argue for the benefit of ties over a loss while meathead Golic swore he'd rather lose than tie.

The whole player safety aspect of this is fraudulent anyways. If you really care about player safety, there wouldn't be an OT. Five minutes off the clock will result in 8-12 fewer plays. The college model would be better than this, even if teams started on their own 35. For those that worry about not eliminating aspects of the game, go to a mixture of the college/pro system. Each teams gets one possession under current NFL rules.

Get rid of the game clock, only use the play clock. Start with a kickoff. Receiving team must score, punt or turnover. Once the ball exchanges possession the other team has their chance. After each team possesses the ball once the game ends regardless of score. There would still be ties, but imagine if the receiving team scored a TD and is up 7. If/when the other team scores they have the option to kick the FG and tie or go for 2 and the win.
