Just a guess, but I'd say anywhere from round 2-5 for Orlowsky and round 3-6 for Kaills. I know that's a wide guess. Those could be switched depending on need. And they could go higher or lower depending on how the true experts evaluate them. But they are certainly in the draft mix. Orlowsky is the more versatile (center and guard) while Kalis (guard) is the more powerful. If you're a team looking for a quality swing man, able to make line calls to bolster your OL, then Orlowsky's your guy. If you're a team looking to play some smash mouth run the ball offense, then Kallis' is your guy. Great opportunity for these former Eds players to have a chance to play in the Senior Bowl, even if they don't make the NFL.

And a great chance for Kareem Hunt to show just how good he really is having come from the MAC. He was every bit ready for prime time. I think he has a future. I'd love to see the Browns take a flyer on a NE Ohio kid like Kareem Hunt in round 3 or 4. That kid is a player!

Edit:

CBS Sports currently has Orlowsky rated as the #3 center and the #81 best player overall. They project him as a 2nd or 3rd round pick. They aren't as high on Kallis. They have him as #281 best player and project him as a 7th or FA. SI has Orlowsky as the 3rd best center and Kalis as the 9th best guard. At this point, this is all conjecture since all these lists will change with all the personal workouts and the combine.

CBS sports has Kareem Hunt as the 9th best RB and the #121 best player overall. I think that goes up with his play at the Senior Bowl. I realize its all conjecture at this point, but interesting to see where these kids land. Good luck to all of them.

Solid schedule, but they need a full ten (10) games to get this team prepared if they intend to make a post season run. Any of the Erie teams open in week 1?

There are only 2 Erie team that would be worth Eds scheduling. Erie Cathedral Prep won the 4A state title last year and has a ton of returners. I'm not sure they are open or not, but that is who Eds should reach out to. I'm also very disappointed if Pine Richland dropped Eds. That could have been another great game, especially with PR returning their D1 stud QB. I am very surprised that they would only play the 1 year. Another Pittsburgh area team that would be a great call to see if they are open would be Pittsburgh Central Catholic. Always Loaded with D1 talent. State Champs in 2015, State runner-up in 2016. Week 1 is the only week the WPIAL teams are open. So there is a chance. I would love to see that game as well.

Glad to see a ten (10) game schedule. Week 1 against McDowell will be a test for the D...the triple option style played by McDowell can give teams fits.

Go Eagles!

Elder Game Location

Why is the Elder home game listed as "TBD"?
Is that the weekend of the Lakewood Marching Band Festival?

Last year I think the Band event was in Week 5, however it had been Week 4 in previous years. The Elder game has moved around since moving from Week 5 to Week 4:
2015: BW
2013: JCU
2011: Fairview HS

Not sure when Band O'Rama 2017 is. If it is Week 5 like last year, I'd guess Elder will make first trip to Lakewood Stadium since 2009.

Just an FYI: McDowell no longer runs a triple option and hasn't for 2-3 years. They run more of a spread and has a decent QB.

IIRC, the last time we played McDowell they had a beast of a running back named James Conner. He went on to have an outstanding career at Pitt, and even battled back to play after being diagnosed with cancer.

You are correct about the last time you played McDowell and James Conner. The following year, McDowell got a new coach and the triple option at McDowell was no more. After Conners battle with cancer, it was awesome to see him back on the football field for Pitt and now getting ready to get drafted into the NFL.

A story from a Notre Dame magazine that explores concussions/traumatic brain injuries as being caused by playing football. The article discusses a lawsuit filed here in Cleveland by the estate/family of St. Ed's alum Steve Schmitz '74, now deceased, alleging that Mr. Schmitz's death (in his late 50's) was caused by football injuries.

http://magazine.nd.edu/news/assessing-the-damage/

"At least one lawsuit has been filed against Notre Dame by a former player. Steve Schmitz, who played as a receiver and running back in the late 1970s, and his wife sued, alleging degenerative brain disease as a result of Notre Dame’s “reckless disregard for the safety of an amateur collegiate football player.”...

Although Schmitz’ case dates well before there were widespread concerns about head injuries, it is worth noting that Frank Varrichione, who played for ND in the 1950s, was included as a plaintiff in the NFL settlement case, as were other former Irish players."

fwiw...he was a great high school football player...didn't he score some huge number of touchdowns? He got little mention from people over the years, I'm assuming because his college career didn't amount to a whole lot.

Schmitz graduated from St. Ed's in 1974 and was the best player on an undefeated team 9-0-1. Unfortunately with the way the playoffs worked, that team did not garner enough playoff points to win the region due to a 20-20 tie in a mud game against Benedictine in the backyard. Coached by Denny Marcin, who went on to coach at the collegiate and professional levels, this was the team that put St. Ed's on the state football map.

The Eagles had begun to beef up their schedule a little to gain more respect and make a run at the state football playoffs which were only a year or two old at the time. They added Stebuenville Big Red as an away game and went down there and won 36-0 in what many around Ohio saw as a shocker. Among the highlights that year was defeating a very good St. Ignatius team 14-13, first touchdown was on a flea flicker on the first or second play, then stopped Iggy on a 4th down late in the game to preserve the victory.

Schmitz was coming off a knee injury so he did not play much as a junior, really tore it up his senior year and was recruited to go to Notre Dame. He was one of many great running backs the Eagles had in the 1970s, names like Portale come to mind. The '75 team receives a lot more praise because they made the playoffs, destroyed Warren Western Reserve 52-28 at BW and lost a heartbreaker to Moeller in the state championship game. But I would argue '73 made that all possible.

I just noticed senior Kevin Dever is an Ohio State football recruit. What position did he play and is it me or does it feel like this was so quiet compared to past recruits playing at big schools?

He's a preferred walk-on...which is a great thing, but he's not a scholarship winner. Ignatius has a preferred walk-on at Ohio State right now (OL Kevin Woidke), who's made progress (going into his junior year next fall, he is currently listed 2nd string on some depth charts).

He played safety for us. I imagine he transitions to linebacker under a college weight-lifting program.

That's a ton of home games! Although the away games in the middle of the season are pretty big ones. I hate playing a Canadian team but beggars can't be choosers, until we figure out a better way of doing scheduling its just part of the process.

Because the Ignatius, Elder, and Moeller games have been on the same Home/Away cycle, we often have excess home games in odd-numbered years. Add to it that we tend to fill in with teams that don't require a corresponding road game (Glenville, Buchtel, Canada, DC)

The 8/26 open date is now at Erie McDowell. I think it is Friday 8/25 at 7:00.

Random question but I figured the football thread gets the most views but does anyone remember Ed's or Ignatius dominating the rivalry in most sports like the Wildcats have beaten the Eagles this year?

Twice in football, I believe 4x in hockey, twice in basketball, soccer and the rest of the sports I believe outside of wrestling were all Wildcat wins. Odd year or are people worried? Flan had not lost to Ignatius in a playoff game ever until last year. I believe last year was also the first time Ignatius had beaten Ed's in a hockey playoff game too. Soccer had begun to even out under Coach Dore' but really regressed lately and returned to yearly beat downs. Football was embarrassed at the stadium but really played their best game in the playoffs, still wonder what could have been if Kramer didn't break his leg.
