Hopkins is a good dude, but was in over his head as a HC. His hire showed the TW Administration was not really serious about winning.

We'll see how they do with the replacement hire.

Here was Hopkins' resume.

Quote:
Hopkins replaced Scott Gordon, who went 22-48 in seven seasons with the Cardinals, after serving as an assistant at Kilbourne in 2013, an assistant at Thomas in 2012 and head coach at Franklin Heights in 2010 and 2011. His coaching career also includes a stint as an assistant at Otterbein University.
Do you really think someone would want the Thomas Worthington job with a better resume than that? I don't think they're going to get a current head coach from a reasonably successful program to take that job, unless they're willing to drop serious cash, which I'm guessing they can't do without jacking up the pay for the Kilbourne coaching gig as well.

It seems to me their only option is to get try to get a really young HC from a much smaller school who desperately wants a DI HC job, and pray he turns out to be a superstar.

He was 1-19 as HC at Franklin Heights and, as I understand it, was an assistant coach LOTS of places.

Lack of longevity should be a concern and as should abject failure in one previous attempt at HC.

TW should have never hired him in the first place and I think (if you look back at threads from around that time) you will find that I said so at the time. I think it is wiser to take a shot on someone who has never been HC before than it is to hire someone who has been one before but failed miserably at it.

Some people just don't have what it takes to be the HC, but are great assistants. Norv Turner, Buddy Ryan, Cam Cameron, and others would fall into that boat. Maybe Hopkins is that. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I get all that, but this deal is a two way street. Thomas Worthington isn't a school that's going to have its pick of the litter in terms of candidates. Who on Earth would want that job that isn't inherently risky?

It's easy to tee off on the Hopkins pick, but it's certainly far from a guarantee that the next "hot shot young assistant" that comes along is going to do much better. Considering the choices Thomas Worthington will likely have, it's almost certainly going to be a shot in the dark no matter what they do.

Don't disagree. But I am willing to bet any amount of money that the next coach won't do worse in 3 years: There is only one way to do that and that is by going 0-30.

All that being said, as I have stated earlier, I sincerely believe Hopkins is a genuinely good human being. And I do think the TW squad showed improvement, in many facets of the game, this season despite drawing a bagel. I just don't think he is a good HC and I think that was known before they gave him the job.

Next coach definitely faces an uphill climb for sure. Being in the sole 8 team OCC division does not help things, because TW won't benefit from the cross-over parity scheduling the OCC has been doing. This makes their non-conference schedule critical. The AD needs to show the new coach some love there.

PM has opened up; if Tobin were to want the FC job the question would be if a) he's a likey hire and b) if it's a good move for him.
